My grandfather was at the “called shot” game. He always insisted that Babe was being heckled by the Cubs players about the first two strikes (which supposedly was common in those days) and lifted his finger towards the pitcher and said “I still have one more!” And then hit the famous home run. I wish I would have videoed him telling the story. He passed several years ago and I told the this story as part of his eulogy.

Your grandfather was right. The Cubs were heckling Babe from their dugout. The only thing debatable is whether Ruth called his shot. But film footage does show Ruth making gestures towards the Cubs as he rounded the bases.

Most impressive thing is that they actually saved the bat through all the years. It always amazes me how sentimental people are, and how things that would normally be tossed or forgotten are kept forever. This bat could just have easily been lost, or the Yankees could just have easily not viewed the home run as significant enough to save the bat.

richard pollitt Ruth is the undisputed greatest player of all time. Aaron Bonds both needed thousands of more at bats to brake his record (and o e steroids as well). Everyone forgot that Ruth started in his youth as a pitcher. His he was a hitter In his life he would have had way over 3000 hits and a 1000 home runs. As a pitcher he had nearly 100 wins in just 5 years so he was awesome all around. Plus he has records that still stand today like most total bases in a season for example. Best hr per at bat ratio. No one will ever hit 700 hrs in 8000 at bats Ever.
