How to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the thread tension assembly on a vintage Singer sewing machine and on some Japanese machines, too. This style was used on many models, like the 221 and 222 featherweights, as well as the later models 66, 99, 15-91, 15-125, 201 and more for many years, so it's likely that this is the one you're looking for. The older versions of this assembly were less complex but we'll get around to making a video of the earlier versions, eventually.

Hi love your video. I cleaned and oiled my mom's 1956 singer 15-125. What would be problem if there is no tension when I put the presser foot down.. could it be tension pin not engaging.. do you have a video on that?

Mike and TS,this is Marie in GA, I was the one that sent White 651 service manual. I hope you’re having a wonderful Christmas, lots of peace, quiet, and family. I have been catching up on videos, love the vintage, I don’t have room for all I have, going to donate them to the National Quilt Museum in April for their fundraising auction. I am working on a machine I could use some advise on an Old National/Davis vbs that I started dismantling yesterday in a whirl to see how it comes apart. Is there somewhere I can find how to take the entire working mechanism apart for cleaning, already have the shuttle carrier and feed dog Pittman? off, need to get up in side, could send you pictures if needed, Merry Christmas!

Hi Marie, sorry to say that I don't have any experience with that machine. A youTube search may be helpful and a general web search may turn up info on it. That's awesome that you're donating your machines to a good cause. Best of luck with the one you're working on.

Great video, thanks! When/why would one disassemble the tension assembly? What symptoms would the sewist be experiencing?

if you're having trouble adjusting the thread tension, if you can't seen to get enough tension and have loopy threads on the bottom of the fabric, if thread is catching or breaking in the tension disks, you may have crud between the tension disks or you may have burrs or rusty spots on the faces of the tension discs. Basically, you disassemble the tension to clean the faces of the two convex plated that pinch the thread and cause the drag that is the thread tension.
