Clean and Easy 2nd Gen Volt Dash Cam Install

This video shows you how to quickly and cleanly install a dash cam in a 2nd generation Chevy Volt. It requires limited tools and can be accomplished in around 30minutes. I provide the details of what camera and wiring I used, but you could substitute a number of cameras to meet your preferences.

Andy. Nice video. One thing you should note is that when it rains or snows, the windshield wipers sweep below the area where you mounted your dash cam. That means the area where you mounted yours will be covered with rain or snow. You may wish to reposition yours till the lens is almost parallel with the module on the windshield. I have a A119s which is the same design as yours (also with tilting lens). I sprayed water on my windshield to map out the sweep area before I permanently installed my cam. Hope this helps..

Thanks for this clear explanation. I have a 19 Volt and just purchases the same dashcam as you. Im glad you mentioned which fuses to use as the tap. Saves time in getting an multimeter/test light and going through the fuses until i find a good one.

I recommend you reroute the wire BEHIND the curtain airbag. The way you have it now is crossing over which could be bad. You don’t want to slow down or impede the inflation of an airbag.

Andy when I did mine I took off the A pillar to run the wire behind the side airbag.

Thank you, this is great, i'll be using this when i get a dash-cam put into my volt. I haven't decided if I'm going with a dash cam-recorder unit, or just the camera and having the recording unit somewhere else. Since i'm wondering if i can also have it record the backup camera. and maybe 2 more. Since i'd like to be able to have tesla like camera coverage around my car. So maybe i'll find a 4 input recording unit.

I bought a hard wire kit. I followed the instructions and nothing happened when I turned it on. I think the transformer is a dud. The routing instructions worked good for the plug too. I just zip tied again close to the plug. Thanks for the video.

I have the same Volt and appreciate your video. I just bought a DDPai Mini 3. Is there a way to wire it so the camera always has power? I would like to have the parking feature active. Thanks 👍🏼

Sure! Most of the other fuse positions are always powered. Just use one of those and you should be set.

Does using 36/37 allow you to use parking modes? That is, the camera can run even if the car is off? If not, is there a suggested fuse to use? Thank you!

No, that fuse won’t provide power for parking modes. For that I suggest a tap for a constant power fuse or doing a direct wire (with new fuse) to the battery. I don’t have one to suggest. I’ve never been much interested in parking mode as it can’t be finely controlled. Much of the recording these days would take place in my garage. #ThanksCovid.

Be sure to get the "Micro2" fuse adapter specified in the video. There's a "mini" version on Amazon that looks very similar, but will not fit the Gen2 Volt fuse box!

Does the adapter need two fuses to go into it or just one?

This might be a long shot for a reply but I’m hard wiring a Dashcam into my 2017 Volt and the fuse tap adapter doesn’t fit too well into F36 with the fuse in it. It hits the 2 larger ones below. Any tips?

@@Skarkroe tried that. It fits if I plug into F37 with the fuse sticking out upward, but I get no power to the dashcam that way :/ I think it’ll be fine with how I managed to squeeze it in now tho.

Where did you put the ground wire?

Russ Reimann - The lower right side of the fuse box has a bolt holding it in place. I used that for my ground.

I had very bad experience with A119, the most disappointing dash cam I ever had, unreliable, given that up.
