It's actually awesome that you showed the mistake and how to repair it. Mistakes are a part of woodworking and brainstorming fixes is a talent. Those planters turned out beautifully. I would add that I think this would be a terrific first time woodworker project.

As a beginner, I am blown away by the production quality, thoroughness, and useful tidbits found in this of this tutorial. Excellent video!

Looks awesome! My only suggestion, coming from a metalworking background, is to remove the millscale from the angle iron, then prime and paint. Millscale is a thin layer of oxide that forms during the milling of the steel, and while you can just paint over it like you did, youll get a smoother surface, and a longer lasting paint job if you remove it first. I've always sandblasted or ground it off, but there are chemical removers as well.

I like the design and look. For the interior I use non woven geo fabric. Allows water and air to pass. Nicely done!

I lined the inside walls of my planter box with high density foam. This helped to keep the dirt cooler and lessen the water evaporation because the boxes received a lot of sun. one other thing, I made wooden legs and to keep them off the ground I used feet that would normally be used on the bottom of a cutting board

Your planter boxes look awesome! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and being so honest with the mistake you made and showing us how to fix it. You are awesome. Thanks again.

Those boxes look beautiful! I didn't realize that they make a plug-making bit for a drill. That's a cool idea. I need to get me one of those. Have you ever made a large box with a false floor so that less dirt is needed? It would take a lot of dirt to fill that big box unless you filled the bottom with branches and stuff to take up space.

consider a metal counter sink bit or using small lag bolts on those legs.

What is the Cabot Australian Timber Oil color used?
@arminla19 күн бұрын
Would you recommend the same plan with mahogany wood? How tall do you think I can make them ? Finally, I’m not sure your link to the legs work? It takes to the product page, but which do you recommend and sizes (eg, outside length etc)

I like the look of the timber oil. That’s a new one to me. Is there a certain brand that you prefer? I really like your color choice…what color is it? Thanks.

@@MWAWoodworks im gathering that its not gonna have the same fit n finish… i think itll suffice for a planter. I just cant see spending $14 per 1x4x12 cedar board

Great planter box. Would it work if I had a false bottom halfway up so I don’t have to use as much dirt? Anyway, they are beautiful and something I am interested in making.
@MWAWoodworks Жыл бұрын
Sure. You can place the bottom to wherever depth you want.

Very nice build and like the look with the black legs and cedar wood. I do have one question though, it looks like the screws that hold the legs to the planter are holding all the weight of the planter box and whatever gets put into the planter box. So what would the weight limit be on one of these you show? I know it would all depend on the length of the planter box and depth. Cheers
@MWAWoodworks Жыл бұрын
Even the large planter fully loaded is less than 100 lbs. I'm sure the shear strength of a single screw is more than that and mine has 16 screws.
@JameyMauk8 ай бұрын
What are the screw lengths and drill bit size? I’m also going to use rough cut 1x2’s for the framing since can’t rip.

I think the depth of the dirt is a waist, but every person can make the height of to floor where they so choose. How ever I sure do like the look of your planters . Just thought cutting back on the potting soil would save some on the cost .

Why not use a drill press to do all the countersinks? Would seem to be much faster if making several boxes
@MWAWoodworks Жыл бұрын
You could add that bit to a drill press for sure

coulda just gone with a slightly wider piece of angle iron.. 2.5" angle instead. granted, unless you did all the planters that way, it would look odd. and of course would add cost.. or change to 2.5" aluminum and since larger angle, wouldn't necessarily have to go to 1/4" thick. just side thoughts. cool build though.
@Taooflu8 ай бұрын
Love it but the iron part was ehhh yeah intimidating but looks so good

Id say the iron part was the easiest of all provided you have the correct tool to cut the metal (which can be rented).
