This might be a stupid question, but can you use normal nail polish to paint the gel tips? I have so many beautiful colors that aren't gel polish I'd like to use..

Not stupid! Good question. Not 1000% sure but I think yes you can! You’d just have to wait for it to dry, like on normal nail beds:

There’s a product called hydracol you mix it with nail polish and it turns it into a gel polish. Mix equal parts, paint, cure, etc..

Is the flash curing process necessary or can I go without it if i just have the normal UV lamp?

For gel x I’d say it’s definitely necessary since you need to apply pressure and hold it in place to flash cure for 15 seconds. Then you cure it a full 60-90 seconds once your whol hand is done. 😅
