How Farms Work

6 жыл бұрын

After working on the combine for a week and a half, we finally got it put back together and are ready for harvesting.
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZbin channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!

Hey I'm glad someone else has my kind of luck. Of course if I were doing the video it would have been sunny those day and rained for a week after the combine got fixed. I hate watching "This old house " were they cut out all the problems. Thanks for keeping it real.

Good video Ryan. Don't you just love it when what looks like an easy job turns into a blank, blankty, blank, blank job, that should have been a couple hrs, turns into a 2 week project. Been there done that many, many times. Glad you were able to get the combine back together and ready for harvest again. But it would have been a difficult day if the weather had changed while you were trying to get things going. Glad it all worked out for you. Till Sunday, can't hardly wait until Sunday to see what you have for video. Thanks for sharing......

The LH clean grain cross auger bearing, has a small plate behind it, on the outside sheet metal , that covers a slot. Take the LH bearing, bearing flanges, and plate off. The auger screws out the LH side of the combine.

The Dewalts got a lot of use in this project, I'm sure. If not for the three of you working together, who knows how long it would have taken? I know this was the "sanitized" version for a family channel, so there's a whole lot more you obviously couldn't include. Thank you for showing us, as Travis said, "The Rest of How Farms Work".

Yep BIL's 9600 Deere combine decided to open up a slit in the boot last year; we cut and welded a patch over it and it's been good so far, but eventually they wear down to the point that it has to be replaced. They start dribbling grain and it doesn't take much and you've got some real losses. Later! OL J R :)

Other than changing the Heads..What do you do to your combine to change from harvesting corn to harvesting Beans?
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 6 жыл бұрын
On this particular combine, you swap the heads, then reset the feederhouse speed to minimum for soybeans (so you don't overspeed your sickle knife on the platform-- you often speed it up for corn to increase the gathering chain and stalk roller speed for higher ground speed), then you start the thresher and reset your concave clearance with a button in the cab (electric motor and screw raises/lowers the concave-- tighter for beans, more open for corn), and adjust your cylinder speed up or down for the crop with another button. Then you shut the machine down and manually adjust the precleaner and chaffer and sieve openings for the crop you're harvesting. Whole process takes about maybe 10-15 minutes at most. Biggest PITA is that these Deere's have a "wrench" that you have to climb in on top of the chaff chute on the back of the cleaning shoe and reach up in there to engage "lugs" on the adjusters to set the precleaner, chaffer, and sieve openings... Don't know WHY they did it that way-- heck even my old 1970's Ford 640/ Claas Senator combine had a couple of push-pull rods and knobs on the side of the machine and notches for the adjusters... you just pushed or pulled on the knobs to set the chaffer and sieve to the proper clearances when swapping between crops! The newer machines basically have auto-adjust on them... hit one button and it resets everything from the corn settings to the bean settings automatically... Later! OL J R :)

And I’m not trying to argue or anything lol. But I did a 9510 clean grain auger replacement and that’s how it came Out. Maybe there’s a serial number break that it changed. When I was told That’s the way it comes out I couldn’t believe it either till I did it. Kinda weird, kinda cool lol.

There is no way to take it out of the left side, at least not on ours.
@bradchoq
@bradchoq 6 жыл бұрын
Bear in mind, mine is a 9500- but take the left speed sensor off, then the bearing, then the plate behind the bearing. There should be a slot. Use a pipe wrench or water pumps to turn the auger counter clockwise while pulling to the left. the flighting will cork screw out through the slot. That's how the service manager told use how to get ours out. I find it odd that the new series wouldn't be made that way....

Ok, who here has put together a BBQ and not read directions after putting 80% together realize that you need to pull 79% of what you put together back apart to put in an important part. I will put my hand up now! PS. Today I may not read the direction but I will thumb through them to see if I could miss something while putting it together.

Never fails no matter what your working on a 15 minute 25 dollar repair ends up being a day and a half at least and $200+ dollars Job....last summer my wife decides she wants to redo our bathroom, budget was $500 for supplies paint wall paper boarder and new floor treatment and a weekend set aside to do her project. Hmmmm, well 2 full weeks later working 8 to 10 hours a day and nearly $4000 dollars later the bathroom was repaired and got the new paint and tile floors along with a new tub toilet vanity, sub floor, floor, tile, new drywall, new window and so on. When I went to paint I noticed the drywall was wet behind the trim upon further inspection I found that the tub drain had been leaking and ruined the drywall and the wood floor including the floor joists so I literally had to tear ou everything and rebuild a complete new batroom. Because that bathroom is above a crawl space we never new the tub was leaking whom ever installed the tub drain never tighten the drain nut for the trap and it has leaked since it was installed, it was here when we bought the house 32 years ago and in 32 years we never once had water on the floor because it all ran into a small crawl space under one end of the house and soaked into the ground. Thank goodness the wife wanted it repainted and new tile because it was a miracle the tub had not fallen through the rotten wood under it. But that $500 turned into a 4k job fast fortunately I am able to do that work myself or it wood have been 10k-12k easy if we had to pay a plumber and carpenter's to do it.

I went into one of my bathroom re-dos knowing some of the subfloor was rotten. After getting through the subfloor i found that the structural floor was rotten in about 30% of the bathroom. I had not manufacture my own 2x7's (yes, 2x7's) and replace almost all of the drywall, plumbing, sewer, tile, tub, and various things. I too was lucky do do everything myself. probably spent about 4 to 5k.
