I use this method regularly and it works great. I only use 2 Tablespoons of rice, you don't need that much to do the job. Then after I run the rice through, I remove the upper burr and thoroughly brush it and the bottom burr to remove the rice dust. I then turn the grinder upside down over the kitchen sink and tap out anything else that was left behind. Before brewing my next cup of coffee, I run 1 Tablespoon of coffee beans thru to remove any remaining rice dust, which there is very little of, btw.

I've been using instant rice for years to help clean my burrs. It is just as effective as 'Grindz' at a fraction of the cost.

I highly recommend you UNPLUG THE GRINDER before you take it apart next time... ;~) Thanks for the video. I have a 4.5 pound box of Minute Rice that should keep me in business for the next 20 years!

I use rolled oats which are soft, and slightly abrasive. They also have an ability to absorb oil... Just look at how the ladies use oatmeal for facial packs... :-)

Now I am thinking to use this as a rice grinder from time to time. Did it make very fine rice flour??
@nonesuchone13 жыл бұрын
Just run a handful of old/cheap coffee you don't mind parting with and run it slowly after you run the rice. That'll help remove the leftover bits of rice (anyway they don't seem to do much harm)

Further to my previous comment... I recently invested in a brand new Breville Smart Grinder Pro, on the advice of my coffee supplier. (I'll admit that it sounded like very stupid advice, considering the problems with the first one.) Apparently, the real issue was that the clutch mechanism in the first roll-out was defective. No amount of cleaning and purging with rice or Grindz pellets, or testing different coffees, was ever going to remedy that bad clutch. I removed both burrs, and brushed out every last molecule of coffee, and the clutch still screamed as if it was clogged solid. According to my supplier, the new model has a different clutch, and I haven't had a problem since.
@JesseCohen7 жыл бұрын
Same issue, inside of 2 years of ownership. Breville replaced it under warranty, though they didn't have my brushed steel model with the new clutch at the time. The black one was fine, and has been chooching ever since, though it gets a more frequent vacuuming and brushing inside the grind chamber now. ;) Interestingly enough, our older model Breville Hemisphere blender failed for the same reason, bad motor clutch.

Only minute rice is used to clean the burrs with, stephbunny. It is softer than raw rice as it is precooked and dried.

My coffee supplier freaked when I told him I'd used rice to clean the burrs of my Breville Smart Grinder Pro. Rice does clean the burrs, but apparently is much harder than coffee beans. I'm told it will seriously dull the burrs in very little time. I now use Grindz 'beans', a food grade professional cleaner designed specifically for cleaning coffee grinders.

I just talked to a Breville Repairman at Breville the other day who RECOMMENDED running a handfull if rice through mine.
@anazi2 жыл бұрын
Thats why precooked rice is a thing. Its softer and I heard it does pretty well. I am seriously thinking to switch to this method because its really costly routine to clean our grinders at the coffee-shop. Also I am always afraid of adding chemicals to clean any tools that touches food directly. So I try to use food grade cleaning products in all of my coffee-shops.

Do not wash your rice. It has to be super dry. If you brush out the burr area and run some coffee through after there will be no effect on the coffee taste.

what is minute rice?
@helpfulnatural11 жыл бұрын
Cooked or "boiled" rice would gum up the machine and you'd never get it all out. The idea here is to use the hard, abrasive nature of the dry rice to scrape the metal burrs clean. It also helps absorbs some of the coffee oils left behind so they don't go rancid in the machine, making your coffee taste bitter & awful.

Lame..rice....no dice....Seeing as how much it didn't clean, as well as how much rice residue was left, I don't see the point. Also, it looks as though it was easy enough for you to disassemble the burr assembly. So you might as well take your espresso brush and clean manually. You'll be able to do a more complete cleaning as well as having a better view of what you have done.
