Hello, Mr Kevin! This last knife - is an authentic leuku knife. This type of knives are traditional for Saami people, indigenous peoples inhabiting the region of Sápmi, which today encompasses large northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland. This one is definitely made in Finland, because it`s Marttiini company(you can see a little 'm' on the front of sheath and stamp "J.Marttiini from Rovaniemi"). Marttiini leuku`s sheath and the knife usually has a picture of man riding on the sledge with caribou deer and traditional house for this nomadic people. I think this example of leuku was made from carbon steel and it had wood of 'curly birch' on handle. It`s northern tree, so it`s like traditionally used for knife handles and also had a great look. Marttini knives from 1950-1960`s are usually was with lacquered hadles, but it often ruined with time, so you can try to carefully use a sanding paper like 400 or 600 grit and cleaning the handle from lacque. After this - try to cover handle with Rustins oil or something like that and it will have a fantastic look. This type of knife is great for outdoor work with wood, making fire-feather and things like that. Scandinavian knives are very good in wood carving and outdoor activity. Great video, keep up!
@earlbargen46953 ай бұрын
The handle on the Martiini Leuku knife was lacquered when I bought it. It was starting to flake off, so I removed the old finish and gave it a light sanding. I then treated it with boiled linseed oil which I thot turned out very well. The pommel was a bit loose as well so I glued it down just to tighten it up. Cool old knife that I was happy to pass along to someone that I knew would appreciate it.

That piece of paper from the knife kind of reminds me of a part of a cigar band maybe, as a former cigar smoker that is what I was seeing, the knife that came out of is a beautiful knife one I know you are proud to have, don't you wish some of these old knives could talk and tell you their stories, especially those really old ones, one of my greatest regrets in life was not sitting down with my grandfather or dad or my grandmother and mom and get them to tell me stories of when they were young and even mature before I was part of their life about things that made them who they are, my grandfather was born in 1879 and my dad was born in 1915 so both lived through things that we read about in history books, even my dad talked once about going to visit relatives just about 40 miles away and going by wagon and having to sleep under the wagon as it was more than a day's ride away, he grew up on a farm and that was around 1920 and they did not have an automobile yet

That's a J Marttini Puukko knife a traditional made Puukko Kevin ! With a curly birch handle the Finnish people have made them knives for over 3 thousand years and curly birch is getting rare and it comes from Findland! I myself make traditional Puukko knives you can see them on my KZbin channel I also order the curly birch from findland to mod the knives I do also on my KZbin channel you see the Buck 110 and Uncle Henry and the Petrified Fish knife as well. The Puukko knife was used by the Finnish to fight the pirates and is as significant to Findland as the samurai is to the Japanes in important of their culture!

Kevin, That Sami Knife's handle is made from Artic curly birch. It is called a "leuku", not a "puukko" (which is a smaller knife). The main tasks for it are chopping and butchering. The animal pulling the sled is called a reindeer over there. In North America we classify them as caribou.
