It's better if you dip the q-tip in olive oil or coconut oil. The Q-tip moves easily in his ears and the oil helps condition them as well. Also, the oil is a deterrent for the mites.

An ear cleaner is the best option. They are formulated to break down wax, evaporate quickly, and most are antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, etc. There are tons of really good ones available in stores.
