love the explanation of doing this, i was looking for guard hair

This was interesting- I've always wondered how they're made. I think it's cool that you find a use for all of the parts when you're able to and that your game & fish support what you do. 👍✌

This is so cool!!! I have been so curious about how you process a porkie and how to prep the quills ever since I saw quill art in books as a kid in middle school.

My friend wants to try it and found one with a leg ripped off, they took it home and threw it in the freezer so it wouldn’t rot and smell before they get a chance to try it. Should they let it thaw out for a couple days or just a day before trying. They were told if it rots the smell goes into the quills

This is very helpful to know how to do this.

Is there a window for when you can use the hair and quills or when the porky is too long dead / too decayed?
@devankicknosway20904 жыл бұрын
great question. quills will last quite a while with roadkill, you'll notice after you soak them if they start to fall apart they are to far gone. summer porcupines hair is more dry and quills tend to be more yellow. winter ones are more preferred

the hair of the hair 💯

What if anything did you do to clean that porcupine? I've taken apart many of them and usually freeze then for 2 weeks to kill off the lice and ticks.
@devankicknosway20903 жыл бұрын
its usually. in the winter when I acquire them. so I leave them outside until I need to work on them. its spring ones that are stacked with ticks. and flies.

I have another question! What do you do with the porcupine when you’re done with it? Toss it into the bush? 😂 I live in the city but I see a lot of roadkill porcupines along the highways but I don’t know what I would do with it after I harvested everything lol.
@devankicknosway20903 жыл бұрын
I will take what I will use from the pine and they'll usually dispose of it somewhere were the critters or bugs can get a meal from it. keep the cycle going.

How do you get rid of the sour smell??? I remember my mom use to bring those into the house and it stunk :(
@devankicknosway20904 жыл бұрын
I kinda don't mind the smell of the hair. if its all full of blood or guts then I'll let them soak a bit and wash em off though

I can't watch this. I am 65 and still in tears over Bambi. I would like to know where to see the things you make from quills. Got a link?

Does it matter how long the porcupine has been dead?
@devankicknosway20904 жыл бұрын
the older the stinkier. If there isn't any damage to the body it won't be smelly. The longer it sits on warm/hot weather the skin will start to fall off when you pull fur or quills out. work quick on a fresh carcass is better

Great video! Do you sell the hair at all?-Adrian Harjo
@devankicknosway20904 жыл бұрын
I used to sell by the ounces, un-sorted. but then I began to save for my new roach. saved 2 lbs worth. hopefully it gets me a big enough roach for my chicken gear.
