Round 1 of our resurfacing residue repair videos!
So check it out. These games were professionally resurfaced (not by me or anyone I know), but they forgot to wipe off the resurfacing compound, so now we've got a thin later of aggregate film and debris on the discs! Not to mention THE GAMES DON'T PLAY. We'll get these all fixed up.
Plus I show you a trick on how to clean out the center ring if you do happen to get water in there. This video has it all, Gamecube stuff, Novus, cleaners, gloves. But the whole point of it all is to make sure if you do end up with a game in this condition that you clean it correctly! That compound can be nasty stuff on surfaces if left untreated!
Tools we used:
All Purpose Cleaner
Cloths
Electric Air
Novus 2
Tools I use! And affiliated links to buy them on Amazon!
(Let me know if you are outside of the US, I have suggested tools for most international countries too!)

Loving the channel. This method and the GC disc cleaning series helped me save Mario Party 7 disc I had bought and wasn't working.

I just watched this channel last night because I want to buy a broken game and see if I can fix it just like you. I watched all 3 videos on GameCube discs and it’s really entertaining and makes me feel like I too can do it. This channel seems really great keep up the good work

Right?! It can get trickier if there is residue still within the ring, but we'll have a GCN series video for that too!

Is it worth trying to remove scratches on a disc that takes several tries of loading and then will finally work in the GameCube?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay 2 жыл бұрын
Absoltuely it's worth it! I would test the game in two different GameCubes if possible. But yep! Removing scratches on a disc can also help speed up load times, the cleaner the disc (and clearer the polycarbonate) the easier of a time the GC laser has reading the disc!

I recently got a non-functional copy of Paper Mario TTYD quite cheap, because it has the problem that it has some deep scratches, I had the idea of sanding it with 3000 fine sandpaper and then polishing it, do you think that would be a good idea?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay 2 жыл бұрын
I would not suggest you start by sanding it down. Check out the GameCube disc cleaning series, specifically Part 3. While you can wet sand discs, it requires a bit more skill (I will be doing a video on these in the future though!)

update, I managed to repair my copy of paper mario ttyd, since the scratches were very deep, I used a drill with a soft cloth adapter to polish the disc! :)

Can water itself clean that resurface residue on the label side, Or can you recommend a specific cleaning solution (maybe a brand)? I have a PlayStation 2 disc I want to clean.
@RestoreAndReplay

Water on it's own will work, but water with a little bit of dish soap or hand soap in it will work better and help remove more of the crud!

@@RestoreAndReplay If the dried resurfacing compound is left on the disc, can it damage it over time? Sorry for the questions; I just recently had a PS2 disc resurfaced, and residue was left on the label side.

I just found this today and I love these videos so much already, especially the Gamecube repair series. You might be able to help me save some of the games I thought were gone forever. I hope to see more of it soon. I was wondering, I have a game that has a spot on it that looks a little strange. Is it possible I could send you pictures of what it is I’m seeing and maybe get your input on it? I can email you pictures if you’d be okay with that.

I use the scratchx auto body cleaner. I tried this a bunch of times but it still doesnt work. Im trying to narrow it down by each bigger scratch to see what the problem could be but im getting a little frustrated with it. I can provide pictures if needed but wanted to see if you have any tips. (This game was resurfaced by a game store. It was working before but freezing at certain parts on the game. Now after getting resurfaced it doesnt work at all)

Also FYI, there are two small cracks in the inner ring but they’re on the label side not the data side
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay Жыл бұрын
@@elansamoohi1929 The cracks, depending on their size, shouldn't effect gameplay. But keep in mind that as a disc is resurfaced (either by my methods or a stores method) you can also widen the scratches somewhat, so its a matter of resurfacing again until that depth of scratch is removed. If you're able to identify the scratches that are causing trouble, you can spot resurface that single scratch, which will help remove some of the issues. Let me know!

I haven't had a chance to try this out yet but I have been gathering the things I need and watching different videos about it. I bought turtle Wax polishing compound and when I opened it the other day it was very thick and dry, I wasn't sure if it was going to be an issue but I just realized the compound you use is very liquid / lotion like. did I buy the wrong thing?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay Ай бұрын
Some polishing compounds need to be cut with water (which is normal in the car world as well). Add some water and mix it up and see what sort of consistency you get. I tend to like a syrup consistency for my polishes!

Hi can you help me out, I have a Metroid Prime for gamecube and I have used the novus 3 about (2 times) and novus 2 (8 times) and it hasn’t done to much as far as the scratches.. It loads to the Nintendo sign and then the retro studios sign but when it loads to the next part it said disc reading error? If you can help me out that would be great.

How does the disc look overall? To use both Steps of Novus that many times should be knocking down most scratches. Any cracks on the center ring or outer ring of the disc? If you could post some pictures we can figure out what the trouble might be!

Alright so you'll see some swirl marks as you start polishing, that's normal. Once you get the larger scratches fixed up, you polish out those little swirl marks afterwards. Totally normal!

Question. So I have a Twilight Princess disc that works 96% of the time. The other 4% of the time, the system will give me the classic "An Error Has Occurred" screen. (A few months ago, I also recalibrated the laser, as this was a problem with all my other discs, now it's just Twilight Princess that sometimes gives this error. I should also mention too, that this disc also makes my console make clicking noises way more than my other games do). Anyway, I noticed on this specific disc, there was leftover resurfacing residue in the center ring from when I bought it off eBay. My question is should I still clean the disc despite it still working most of the time?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay 2 жыл бұрын
If the laser is good, I would def think it's the disc. That sounds to me like there is something on the TP disc preventing the laser from reading still. Resurfacing residue can be thick and obvious, or it can leave a thin barely-visible film across the entire disc. I'd give it a wipe with a damp cloth on the data side and see if it runs. Focus on the edges of the disc too, and making sure there isn't any residue over there. Also, the residue can get into the system. So there might be some gunk on the laser assembly rail too.

It doesn't look like from a resurface machine, rather - somebody was polishing it with a cloth and didn't clean it up after. The scratches seem irregular like from a manual polish, not machine one. At least on the vid, IRL you might see something different.
