Right? 90% chance their house is filthy. Ironically though, sometimes if someone is messy (not dirty) with their car, they're not messy with their house and vice versa. I have absolutely no idea why. Someone's car will look like a bomb went off in the back seat, but their house is tidy. But filthy like this? Filthy definitely everywhere. I'm sure their body is pure filthy too.

As a former smoker, ANY kind of spill, but especially something sticky like Coca-Cola will then become a magnet for cigarette ashes, and no matter how well the initial spill was cleaned, the carpet or upholstery will turn black in that spot. I never had any car that looked anything like this. OMG how can someone drive a car like that! While there was some evidence in my cars that they were smoked in, this looks like it was done daily with the windows closed, the A/C on recirc, and exclusively using the floor as an ashtray.

I drove a lot for my job back then so by the time I wasn’t able to drive anymore, the mileage had gone all the way up to ~200,000. Because I took such great care of it, plus the original owner doing the same, I was able to sell it for quite a fair price. Heavy smoker, scrap, spilled oil, had 10 gallons of used vegi oil spill, hauled a few pigs in the back, had bags of soil rip, hauled fire wood and a couple calves. I tried spraying the inside with a pressure washer but shit, grease, mud, oil etc just sprayed everywhere and made a huge mess.

Worked in a Ford dealership back in the early 90's and we had one customer that treated his F150's like that. He was an old farmer and bought a brand new truck every few years - kind of typical and farm trucks see rough service, but I never saw any vehicles come back in service as rough and filthy as his. He liked his Redman tobacco and would spit out the driver side window, yet made no effort to clear it. Outside and inside of the door would be covered with tobacco spit all they way to the bottom, and the handle pocket would have a pool of it. Every so often, we would have to disassemble the door and clean everything out because the mechanisms would bind. I was in the business for about a decade and never saw worse treated vehicles - He absolutely never washed them either. The irony was that when he bought them new, he would nit-pick every detail for fit, finish, and cleanliness like you would not believe. Six months later they'd come in for service trashed out beyond belief. We just shook our heads and figured - his money, his truck to do what he wants. Odd, but good customer who bought many new F150's from that dealership over many years.

My husband and I were both two-pack a day cigarette smokers and one day we just quit...cold turkey and I immediately had our carpets ripped out and our floors refinished and the curtains removed. Then it was time to repaint our walls. They were supposed to be an off white but they looked brown because of the years of smoking they were exposed to. Before they would be painted I wanted them cleaned because I didn't want someone to try to paint over all that nicotine. Some people came in and cleaned the walls and when they were through we saw that we didn't really need to repaint. All that nicotine came off the walls and they looked great. That has been twenty years ago but I still remember how great they looked after they were simply given a good cleaning! Seeing the interior of this car look renewed and all those terrible stains come out reminded me of my walls. Good job, Mitch! BTW, I think that cup holder was about the nastiest thing I have ever seen. ICK!

When my dad passed away, my mom decided to have the living room repainted. The entire living room took 2 coats of paint, except for the spot right above my dad's easy chair where he sat with a cigarette for years and years. After a good scrubbing, it still took 4 coats over that particular spot before it looked uniform.

How about the carpets? Had a friend that was kicked out of her apartment for cumulative damage from smoking. Up until then, I'd thought all the carpet in the apartment was supposed to be goldenrod and 'autumn' in the 'office' where she spent most of her time. When the furniture was cleaned out I realized it was all supposed to be one color: almond. I have another good friend that is about the same age as the first but she quit during her first pregnancy (her mother's passing at age 53 from smoking probably helped make that decision easier), and she is in good health 40+ years later. The first friend? Heart attack 5 months after she moved into a new place - she now rests with her parents.

The cleaners probably used something called 'sugar soap' (in the UK, might have other names elsewhere), a strong alkaline that dissolves organics instantly, which means pretty much anything you'll find on surfaces. Sold widely but surprisingly few people seem to know about it. Needs to be used sensibly - by definition it's caustic and you MUST wear rubber gloves and generally keep it off your skin (and out of your eyes, obviously).

@@TheDetailGeek 1) I've had a few cars like that over my 35 yrs as a mechanic mostly working for FORD. I had a late 70's mini LTD that was owned by an older railroad worker who brought it in for occasional service. It looked like he painted the car himself with a roller and house paint, worst part of working on it was the fact he had about 50 baseball sized wads of chewing tobacco spit out on the dash. WTF? Why was he saving them? 2) I've had cars with ashtrays overflowing and you could smell it before you ever opened the doors, I used to keep a gallon jug of odorban in my toolbox and would wet a shop rag and throw it into the car before I would drive it into the shop. 3) I had an Escort once that had so much McDonald's trash in the back area that it was flat from the front seat headrests all the way back to the hatchback, you couldn't see the rear seats at all. It was a trade-in and I was asked to diag a tap in the engine. I pulled the valve cover off and you couldn't see the valve train, it had so much sludge you could have painted it and nobody would have known it didn't have a valve cover on it, you could even read the stamped Ford logo the cover had on it before I took it off. It had about 250k miles and I don't think it ever had an oil change. 4) I think the worst smelling car was some 400lb sweat hog brought in for service, when you opened the door it smelled like a group of kids were partying in it and had a puking contest, out came the odorban again.

It was one of the nastiest experiences of my life. Many of them had bugs and / or mold. Well done cleaning this thing up. What a nightmare! It bought back some bad memories for me lol

You can buy your own N95 and coveralls, taping down the openings. That's what I've always done.

My father was a smoker. My parents had a sunroom attached to their house and 3 walls were plastic panels. He used it as his smoking room the last few years of his life. When he passed away I went in and cleaned it out so my mom could use it. It was the same nasty brown dripping down as I sprayed it with cleaner.

Think about their lungs. Omg. My mom smoke from the age of 13 until she died at 57 so I understand what you went through cleaning all of that.

When I did internet installs and service calls, there were houses where the walls, blinds, and furniture that were just yellow and brown, and the smell was so so strong. Everything was yellow and brown. And I smoked at the time, and even I thought the smell was so bad. Probably what helped me quit smoking lol. See enough houses like that, and it disgusts you.

Had the same indecent when my mother-in-law passed. Everything, especially the TV, was covered in cigarette tar and smoke residue.

most cars now have rubber inserts, I take them out and let them soak. They are nasty underneath

I have to say, the before and after pictures are the best. 18:46 You have exactly the same angle and distance for both pictures, and it really shows the difference the best because of that detail. I watch other channels that do stuff like cutting crazy overgrown lawns, and they don't get the same before and after shots. You can tell, but having the exact same angle really shows it.

I think this Escape will be a contender for a Detail Geek Award. Such a satisfying detail. For me, the nastiest part was those cup holders.

Congrats on quitting! Oh man, back in the 90's and up until I met my partner; I didn't even think twice about it. That cigarette lighter socket the modern generation thinks is a weird electric plug was definitely used for its intended purpose. I quit about 16 years ago. I'm so grateful for patient friends because cold turkey is a b*tch.

Amazing work, man! In addition to your amazing work, I think we should give a nod to the materials used by the manufacturer - that they can be abused and restored like this is incredible.

that's what I was thinking, my newer cars I have to be more careful my 2017 Jeep has spots where the metallic inside finish is wearing off and hasn't been been deep cleaned all that often. My most durable paint was a VW 1995 van, it gleamed like pearls.
