About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

I have one huge cast iron skillet that my oldest son gave me. It’s very deep and huge. I have used salt and steel wool. I have removed a little bit but it’s in very bad shape. I have cooked with cast iron skillet’s for going on 50 years. 🤗👍

I honestly didn't think it would work. I'm pleasantly surprised. How do you get the gunky buildup off the bottom of the cast iron? My grandfather always put his in the fireplace ashes . I can't remember anything other than that. Thank you !! Sending Love from Georgia !! 🍑

I've used steel wool with good success. Their magic eraser seems to do well also. When the wife and I got married 26 years ago both our families protested so we just kind of eloped. My mother was the only one who bought us anything as a gift. She bought us one 11 inch cast iron frying pan. Today that pan has had thousands of meals having been cooked in it and in the early years many things burnt in it,lol. We have a great selection of lodge cast iron, but nothing will ever replace that first one that was there in our lil apartment on day 1.

I’ve always used steel wool as well (or Brillo). If I happen to burn something on it, steel wool does the job; then I wash it with water & dish soap, dry it with a towel and then immediately cover it with oil again and wipe off excess with paper towel. When seasoned correctly, most times I don’t even need to wash the pan after cooking. I just wipe it clean with paper towel. It’s beautiful! Love my Lodge cast iron 11” fry pan.

I have a couple cast iron pans in our Barn, I got when my dad passed away. I'm one of 9 kids, and we grew up in the country, next to my grandparents Michigan farm. My dad worked hard to provide for us all, but always took us tent camping in late September, in upper Canada. Talk about brisk mornings!! My parents used those pans to cook both over an open fire and small camp stove, so they bring back great memories! I'm planning on ordering those rust erasers to try to get those pans back in working condition! Thank you for showing me how to save my memories!!

I've used brass wire wheels that fits in a drill. Takes about 10 minutes and it also cleans off the burnt on grease and such. Finish it in the oven like you did a few time till it looks like it should. When you use a wire wheel it's best done outside or in a work shop--gets kind of dusty. Love your channel!

NEVER use brass or copper on cast iron. The soft brass/copper will embed itself on the surface and it will no longer accept seasoning. If you must use a wire wheel, use only a steel wheel.

I wasnt sure what to do with it at first. When we were having a burn pile going i laid the rusty pan in the fire and low and behold it burnt most of the rust off it. I managed to scrub the rest off by hand. Then reseasoned it. That was well over 20 years ago...I love good cast iron pans and Lodge is probably my favorite. I used to buy and sell cast iron. I discovered 40yrs ago that a restaurant grill stone works quickly and disintergrates as you use it to form to the pan to easily remove the rust to a nice finish.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I was on your website and saw this old video and the timing couldn't have been more perfect! I inherited a bunch of old rusted cast iron cookware from my grandmother and watched a few videos about restoring cast iron and honestly was getting kind of discouraged. Some of the methods literally take DAYS to complete. I immediately wend on the Lodge website and ordered 4 of these to start. I may just keep 5-6 around in case I come across more cast iron in thrift shops or yard sales!

When there was no "eraser technology," folks would build a big fire with the rusty pan in the middle, wake up the next morning, dust it off and wash it up with dish soap. End-a story.

Fastest way to totally ruin good cast iron. Not only can it warp the pan, it can cause a condition called mill scale.

Wow!!! I'm so glad I found this video! I'm a very new owner of a couple Lodge cast iron skillets and am clueless on how to take care of them! 😳 I thought I ruined mine by soaking them to remove dried on goulash! I tried many things and they worked just okay. Then when I was on the Lodge website I saw these and wondered if they were just a gimmick or if they would actually work. Thank you so much, I'll be ordering these VERY soon!!! Absolutely loving your videos, I'm learning alot!!! Much love from NW Oregon 💕
