Lot of these people talk 3% -6% etc for example a six percent gallon of bleach in a 2 gallon sprayer u put 1 gal bleach one gallon water that makes it 3% or 12% gallon of bleach to sprayers 50/50 mix makes it 6% ? If makes sense
@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop Ай бұрын
@makycaris4672 that is correct. However my experience from 4 years of washing houses professionally is that for vinyl siding 1-2% is all that's needed. On wood that's not super dirty 1-2% works great and on not very dirty concrete 2% works good. You can up the percentage as needed. But when you get above 2% you start risking burning up grass, flower, plants, etc and have to pay much more attention to your rinsing before and after. As a professional we hit stuff with hotter mixes to get it done quick and right the first time but we also know what we are doing and what it takes to protect the surrounding landscape. But for a home owner the best advise I have is use the lowest ratio you can that does the job and keep everything saturated wet that you don't want bleach on.

A chemist friend of mine who spent 5 years (successfully) leading a team to developing a biocidal house paint (which the company hid/buried) said that you don't want to go over a certain percentage of bleach in the mixture because the natural defense mechanisms of algae and/or mold will trigger, preserving itself. I don't want to quote the number because I don't actually remember. lol 4% was definitely safe, though.

absolutely awesome video ! Question about concrete: The foundation of my home has developed a "reddish" stain on it. I'm assuming its a "leeching" of my heavy clay soil here in Pennsylvania. Would your bleach mix take care of removing these stains?? If so, what ratio/percentage would you recommend.....Thanks much, Steve
@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop 10 ай бұрын
I would try the beach first as it will kill all the organic staining. I would do a 3% ratio If there is grass and vegetation around it and still water the grass and vegetation through the process. If not worried about greenery that go 5%. Then for the red stains I'd use oxcilac acid or mutaritc acid in a pump up sprayer. Spray on and then if needed agitate with a brush or broom. Remeber to wear gloves and a mask and eye protection with the acid. That's what we use as pros to remove iorn and rust stains.

@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop 10 ай бұрын
You can. But dish soap on wood does nothing. That works for vinyl siding and windows. Pointless on wood. The reason they use it on vinyl is its non porous and the soap acts as a surfactant to hold the bleach on the slick surface. Wood is porous and will absorb it just fine.
@daleschimpf
@daleschimpf 10 ай бұрын
@@SamkoWorkShop thx for the reply. Makes sense. So perhaps using soap could be applicable on a non-horizontal surface such as painted wood/vinyl siding (as you mentioned ) or cleaning algae off asphalt shingles.
@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop 10 ай бұрын
@daleschimpf on the wood fence might help a bit. On shingles everything need to change. On shingles you want to run about 4 or 5% bleach mix. And you want to use persil laundry detergent instead of dawn. And you want about 1 ounce of persil per gallon. Persil is the best surfactant to hold the bleach on shingles. You also need to heavily water everything below the roof the whole time as it takes a hot mix of 4-5% to work on a roof and that mix will kill plants grass etc. Also wear a respirator mask. When sodium hypochlorite hits a hot roof it turns into a gas and is not good for you to be breathing.

It seems like my white vinyl fence went years without needing to be cleaned then it got some algae on it and I pressure washed it and holy cow now it comes back each year with a vengeance. Is it possible the pressure washer roughed up the vinyl and now gives the algae a better environment to start? Is there a product I could spray on and leave on that would hold off the algae growth to where I can maybe only "need" to clean the fence every couple years and I can spend more time shooting my longbow?
@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop 22 күн бұрын
The pressure washer just knocks off the surface alge and doesn't kill it at the spor level. Spores hide in the microscopic lines of the vinyl. Use the same set up I describe in the video but take the raptor down to 1.5-2% mix. Spray it on the fence and then rinse 5 mins later with a hose. It will be spotless clean and all organics killed at the spore level for a fresh factory new fence.

When he pressure washed it he feathered the surface. Never use a pressure washer on wood unless it's light pressure to rinse. He should of soft washed it like I show here and let the chemicals do the work. Otherwise the feathering will hold dirt, moisture, mold etc and go back to black quickly. Best thing to do now is sand it. Then stain or seal it or paint it. The sanding will remove all the feathering.

All beach is sodium hypochlorite. So all the same. Difference is the percentage of sodium hypochlorite in it. That percentage is what you need to water down to get the 2-2.5%. Pool sticks is a better value as a gallon of pool shock is 10 or 12% and cost 5 bucks. A gallon of bleach is half that percentage yet cost the same. So pool shock is twice the value.

@SamkoWorkShop Hi Sam, Great video! After cleaning a deck with a bleach solution do you feel it is necessary to neutralize the deck before restaining it? I have some areas with mold and mildew and some areas where the stain has worn away to the bare wood. Some bleach based deck cleaning solutions indicate it should be followed by a wood brightener product because bleach based cleaners can increase the pH levels in your wood, causing it to darken. A brightener is suppose to lower the pH level to restore the wood to its natural color and help open the wood’s pores so that the surface is more receptive to stain. Your thoughts? And might you have a DIY wood brightener recipe? Thanks!

Can you apply this on brick as well? My bricks have gone black x
@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop 3 күн бұрын
Yes. Might need to go with a stronger mix. Rather than half bleach half water to make a 2-2.5% mix. Do 3/4 bleach and 1 quarter water to get 3.5% range for the porous brick.

It will kill the mold but test it first on a small spot to make sure it doesn't eat the stain. Bleach will eat some stains.

@yoshis8417 glad you are enjoying the vids. What I always did as a professional was test on an inconspicuous spot like the under side or the deck or some other hidden non visible spot to make sure the stain would not be ruined. Then if all good I would do one deck rail or board to re verify. Then if all good I'd do it all.

Off the top of my head. 1 gallon sh and one gallon water would be a 3.75 mix so I'd go about one gallon sh to 1.5 gallons of water. You could look up exact math to get exact ratio. But as pros we balk park it. It's quicker and easier

@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop Ай бұрын
@makosharkcnc7730 yes it's bleach or pool shock. You need to water it down depending on the percentage of sodium hypochlorite (bleach) that is in the bottom. If you buy 5% bleach mix it half with water. If you buy 10% pool shock mix it 1 part pool shock and 3 parts water.

Bleach is 5% sodium hypochlorite. When you cut that in half with water is becomes 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. It's the sh that is the chemical in Bleach that does the work.

@@SamkoWorkShop Thank you for your reply! Do we purchase household bleach or sodium hypochlorite from a chemical company? It’s all very new to me
@SamkoWorkShop
@SamkoWorkShop Жыл бұрын
@Letters1to7 chlorox and most bleach is 5 or 6% and pool shock is 10 or 12%. Both are the same thing just different potency. The key is to get the mix down to 2-3% sodium hypochlorite by adding water. As a professional pressure washer I only buy 12% pool shock as it goes much further for me money wise. At lowes etc a gallon of bleach is 5 or 6 bucks and a gallon of pool shock is 8 or 9 but twice the potency. Either way water it down so the sh ratio is about 2-3% for wood. And make sure you soak all vegetation down real well like I show in the video.

You need to hit that stuff with a tad bit of high pressure. No customer wants to come out, & see that all of their rustic looking wood has just turned pure white on them. Very informative video, however. Food for thought😉

I dont like high pressure on wood for the feathering. But on jobs I hit it with a neutralizer from my 12 volt soft wash rig when im done. Reason I didn't explain all that is most people don't have the option or the neutralizer. But even the when it does turn white, the white fades and out after a little weathering. Most people that this video is for is gonna be home owners diy themselves and this will get then the best results without screwing anything up. Last thing we want is homeowners hitting thier wood with pressure and not knowing what thry are doing..lol

How long do you wait to paint old wood like this that you've used this on? I've got some old wood window sills that I'm repairing (my own house, not a customer) and the ones that don't get much sun have some green algae build up that I want to take care of before priming.

@jaytab3686 buy 10% pool shock liquid from lowes or home depot or a pool store. Mix 1 gallon pool shock to 5 gallons water. Do a test spot somewhere unseen as many stains will get eaten by bleach. If thr test spot works good then you know the stain will hold up to the bleach. Stained wood is always a tricky one because the bleach and stain don't always work good together.
