*Baylee I have painted very similar pieces of furniture the same color and material (compressed fiberboard with laminate surface). It can be done but it WILL TAKE FOREVER. You must definitely start with several coats of primer and then several more coats of the acrylic paint of your choice. If you do not put primer, no matter what paint u put on top, it will simply scratch off. I forgot to mention that before u do anything , you must lightly sand everything in order for the primer to stick. Also, if you decide to go through with it, you want to use a spongy roller...not a paint brush. It will take you a few days, but good luck*

I have tried painting my 'work' furniture (desks, dressers, etc) and I'm no expert, but every time I painted/sealed it the chipping and stains looked awful not long after. The only safe parts were places that didn't see much use like under my monitor stands, keyboard etc. It'd be kinda expensive (though the amount of white paint needed to cover the dark finish might end up costing the same), but the contact paper might hold up better than the paint, especially in the less used areas like cabinet doors and drawers, and you don't have to worry so much about chipping it with your fingernails for example.

I paint most of my IKEA furniture - my work desk was black and has held up strong with white paint for 7 years. I'll give you my list of recommendations: - Clean all laminate surfaces well with a mix of warm water and soap. Then use a dry cloth to remove any lingering soap and water residue. - Sand all laminate surfaces. You won't have to do much - just enough so that a primer coat can adhere well. I recommend 120-140 grit sandpaper. Don't sand too vigorously or you'll leave uneven surfaces. - Wipe down the items after sanding - clean away all the sanding dust and debris. - Absolutely use a primer. And get one that's made FOR laminate. I use Zinsser Bin Primer. Technically, you don't even need to sand the surface before using this paint - but for something that gets a lot of wear and tear (like a desk), I highly recommend it. Use a paint roller to paint all the surfaces. You can use spray paint, but it takes way more paint and a lot more work to build up paint for an even finish. - If you want color, go ahead and paint once the primer dries. - When everything is completely dry, paint on a seal coat! I recommend Minwax Polyacrylic Sealer in a Satin finish (probably best for you since it won't have a high shine and be super reflective in videos). I've got a couple of pieces of furniture that I've only painted on the primer coat and it still looks great - but they're stationary items and don't get a lot of traffic. I would also recommend painting everything disassembled. Especially if you have to move and take stuff apart again in the future.

You need some glass on your table top them what ever is underneath remains intact. You can get glass with a matte coating too. Plexi would work too. It would be a cost but you would only need to do it once.

The Real Mythril I know she used to have glass over her desk but I can’t remember why she took it off. She put the contact paper on shortly after I think.
@prettiecake6 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly she stopped using the glass on top of her work surface because of the difficulties that came with it for filming and all of the reflections it caused. But if she could matte coat the pane she had it might be a viable option.

I’ve painted multiple pieces of furniture of that type with rustoleum furniture transformations. It’s worked really well for me and bonus no sanding!
@katjones91616 жыл бұрын
Chalk Furniture paint is excellent at painting stuff like that without pre-sanding. I've used Rust-Oleum Chalk Paint to paint metal with no primer or sealer afterwards and there's not a scratch on the paint anywhere - and it's water based. If you want to make double sure, you can get spray primer and sealer for before and after. Nice and quick. x

I've painted particle wood furniture and the only thing is that resin is the best sealant I've found, I usually just put it on the top surface since that gets used the most and it uses gravity to self-settle. It's also expensive as I'm sure you know, but otherwise, that plastic layer just won't hold paint. I sand lightly, prime, paint, and seal with resin on the top and a regular sealant on the rest of the piece of furniture. Otherwise, it chips and bubbles horribly.

For sure sand it, the paint will stick better. My husband used spray paint on the crib we’re using for our new baby, it has held up so far but it hasn’t gotten daily use yet and won’t until the end of January or beginning of February. So I’m not sure how well it will hold up 🧐

There is paints that have a primer inside you can buy so you don't have to sand furniture first. Never tried, I've been wanting to paint similar furniture like this to. I don't want to sand since it's a messy and takes awhile. That's why I want to get that paint with the primer mixed in. I think they also have that for spray paints which I think might be quicker, that may be how I do it because I'm lazy ha

Plus, if you have more modular furniture, it would be easy to rearrange for shoots. I also think you should take over one of those storage rooms to display more of your things!

Use a melamine primer (google it for a supplier near you) then you can paint any colour you want. A spirit based paint (gloss or satin) will be more hard wearing than a water based paint. If you do use a water based paint you will need to varnish.

i whould contact paper the doors/drawerfronts and top surfaces ect in a lighter color instead of paint it all, useually those compressed wood panels are a pain to get painted nicely since the top layer is a type of plastic vineer. If you really do want to have everything a different color i sugest atleast the work surfaces with the contact paper, paint (especially white) will not stay nice looking for long.

Painting your desk and chest of drawers is doable. I work in the paint department at Rona so I know my stuff. You'll want to sand your surfaces down a little bit to scratch it and give the primer something to grip to. Then one coat of oil based or hybrid primer (water based with alkyd resins), one that will adhere to melamine and ceramic tile. Then two coats of floor paint or cabinet paint, something that will take all of the use and abuse of art and kitties. Painting can seem daunting and a pain in the ass. But throwing away everything because it doesn't look as good or doesn't fit an aesthetic anymore is not great for our little big planet.

The shelf behind you being darker helps you stand out best, and white will require your camera adjusting white balance and exposure different than usual. Dark space is also good for lighting, balancing shadows. Also your brand new chair will be a bit out of place. I do not think that paint on that pressboard stuff covered in a vinyl like stuff will hold up to daily use long. I wouldn't paint them, but if you do paint it something other than white, dust and everything else will show up. Kitty fuzzies will no longer be camoflauged. You do not have white kitiies! A parchment cream would be better. How about a starry scene, not too busy but far more creative like you. Think like Rapunzel!

You don't need to paint the furniture to make your room feel bigger, you just need to pain the walls crisp white, change the floor to something lighter abd buy whiter lights both in your studio and outside it. This will give a better illusion of a bigger room. But if you really have you hart set on repainting then use a spraypaint and a really good primer. Just talk to your lokal paint shop and they will help you find the right paint
