@AbbotsAtHome I have a case like this right now & I used an "oxy" cleaner too. did you seriously "Have to reupholster"? I'm a cleaner (by profession) And I have NEVER ever run into this before. (extreme yellowing) But now??? *I MUST clean it* and fix the problem. in MY case? The ENTIRE headboard turned yellow, and I'm "Stuck" fixing it. ... I'm glad you put the info out here that you did about the alcohol treatment. .... I've actually got an excellent reputation, and an excellent batting average. I almost NEVER fail. But this time???? the headboard turned entirely YELLOW. And the customer is talking about re-upholstering a $3,000 piece. - I MUST try to clean and fix it- so I am stuck doing the (possibly useless) work, and getting a horrible stain on my record (no pun intended). ..... it seemed like this COULD work- like it _COULD_ be cleaned... bc you had begin to gain success. . Very often (in my experience) "Success" came only from ... _Grinding on & Thru_ a problem and continuing to clean. putting the sweat into it. ... do you agree that it is _Possible_? bc reupholstering is *_NOT_* an option.

Use a chalk paint on the headboard and when dry buff in some of the chalk paint wax. I've done similar fabric dining chairs and it completely covers the stain and is not stiff to the touch.

I've thought about trying that on fabric someday Just haven't found the right project. I'll have to give it a try sometime. :) I ended up reupholstering this headboard with blue velvet. It only took about 30 minutes. I have another video showing how I did it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmrJg6Z9aMh-ra8

I appreciate your video a lot. I frequently check before I do things, but last night I was in a moment of productive energy that I squirted Shout, on purpose because of the grease/oily… and I took a steam shot to it. I’ve had this pottery barn linen chesterfield headboard for years now. I’m not opposed to getting a different headboard because I’m ready to change color, but wow as soon as I saw you mention possibly the foam to blame it all made sense. FWIW my side doesn’t get this way and I have long hair but I hardly ever wear product in my hair.. my husband always showers in the morning, so his hair gel is still in at night (yikes, I know!). I love having an upholstered headboard but my next one will be a more wash-friendly material.

I reupholstered mine with blue velvet (the tutorial is on my channel). I love the look of velvet, but it's also amazing at resisting that grease. It's not very absorbent. It's been 2 years and it's still stain free. Good luck!

Vineagar and water pretreatment. Dishwashing.liquid, clorox 2 for colors, and water then use spot cleaner.

The problem is the material. Linen cannot be cleaned with regular upholstery or laundry detergents as it is made of natural cotton fibers that can be damaged from the high alkaline detergents. The recommended treatment is dry cleaning solvent. Alcohol is a solvent and that's why you saw a better result, but it wasn't necessary to mix with water. You can clean any other synthetic material using your bissel, but for sensitive fabrics such as linen, silk, velvet, etc it best to take them to professional dry cleaning service.

Thanks for the tip about fabrics. Taking a King-sized headboard to a professional dry cleaning service is a bit too much of a pain. Especially when all of my local dry cleaners then send big items off to another location for the actual cleaning. Then it takes 2 weeks to get back. But I’ll pay more attention to the fabric choice when I reupholster it. 👍

@@AbbottsAtHome Once you re-upholster the headboard, consider applying fabric protector treatment such as scotchgard. Check with your local carpet and upholstery cleaning professionals if they offer that service. Fabric protection will make the surface of any fabric material stain and liquid proof.

I would have taken the headboard outside with some fabric paint in a spray can and repainted it - even close to the same color if you prefer.

Good idea. I ended up reupholstering it with blue velvet, but fabric paint could have been cool.

how much water to alcohol? there is enough head oil on my side of the headboard to fill a lawnmower, haha.

I've heard 50/50 alcohol and water works. But, I can't say for sure, since my test failed. Good luck!! If you need it. you can see how I reupholstered this headboard in another video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmrJg6Z9aMh-ra8

Love the Bissell! Works great on almost anything in the house. The actual lesson is to take Linen to a professional. Or, just reupholster, it’s cheap and easy!

I have my own upholstery cleaning company...and almost every day we run into the problem of owners trying to clean the furniture themselves but making it worse, that sometimes we can't even fix it. It's better to call a professional right away.
@AbbottsAtHome3 жыл бұрын
There's always a time to call a professional. But, that's not always necessary, affordable or easy to do. My videos focus on showing people what types of fabric and items can be cleaned easily at home. I shared this fail along with tons of success videos to help people decide if they want to do it at home or call a professional. 👍

Instead of trying to drum up business it would have been nicer to share with people how to do it and a link to you doing one, that would have got you way more work than just saying step aside and leave it to professionals
