Ultrasonic cleaning is an important tool for cleaning personal protection equipment (PPE). For example, firefighters around the globe develop cancer at higher rates, versus the general population, due to years of exposure to carcinogens that saturate their equipment. It is imperative to clean these carcinogens from the PPE after exposure. By far, the best way to do that is with an ultrasonic cleaner.
When firefighters enter a structure in a battle of fire, they immerse themselves in toxic smoke and gas, which permeates their gear. Wearing contaminated gear makes them more susceptible to absorbing toxins through their skin and through inhalation from their gear. Cleaning personal protection equipment is mandated by NFPA 1851 once a year. However, many fire houses and military bases are cleaning their gear on a more regular basis to mitigate carcinogenic exposure.
For years, PPE gear was cleaned by hand with soap and water. The process was time-consuming because gear, such as helmets, had to be taken apart. The results were good, but not great.
Since ultrasonic cleaning technology was introduced into this market, cleaning firms specializing in PPE gear have found and documented that ultrasound does a better job of getting into hard-to-reach crevices and removing baked-in suit better than traditional hand cleaning.
