In this video I tell you how to dismantle, clean and oil your Brother 2340 coverstitch machine to keep it maintained. Although the manual does not indicate you should oil this machine, I do oil certain key points on this machine.

New subscriber after I watched your "fabric removal" video. I wondered why the manual had nothing about oiling, since my serger did say to do it and it's the same manufacturer. I always want to maintain my equipment as well as possible. TY!

I figure oiling anything metal that moves can’t hurt, especially with only using a drop where necessary.

Thank you so much for filming the cleaning and oiling of this coverstitch. I haven't used mine in years and I'm sure this this is something I need to do before I use it again.

Thank you! This video was so helpful! I’ve had my coverstitch for several years, but hadn’t had it serviced. It was fairly clean inside, but it definitely sounds better now that I oiled it!

This machine is pretty much maintenance free, just keep it clean and oiled. I have a video on maintaining your pedal too.

So far so good. I have a Bernina Bernette fun lock 009dcc,but i figured its got similarities with the brother. I removed the bottom and cleaned (just a little dust) and oiled where there’s metal on metal that moves.

It’s best to oil the moving metal parts to prevent having to take it to a shop.

I'm so delighted to see this! I just oiled mine yesterday, and it is already running more smoothly than it ever did. (I suspect it sat for a while before being shipped to me a few years ago.... and it has always been a bit "balky" right before it lowers the needle into the fabric.) I'm noticing that the feed dogs are now just moving up and down and not forward... any idea where I need to oil or adjust to get that resolved? I'm assuming something is just sticky with old oil.

Glad this video helps. With regards to your feed dog issue, it may seem like they go up and down but as long as the fabric feeds thru, the feed dogs are fine. They do move forward to help feed the fabric thru, it just may not be so noticeable.

Hi My name is Dahlia and I enjoyed the video a lot. I have my 2340 sitting for quite a while and today I found that the hand wheel didn’t turn. I got panicky but went to the brother sit and could resolve the situation. Nevertheless the dials for stitch length and differential feed are hard to move. Can I oil or put some lubricant on these parts. Also what is the brand of the air compressor you use. Thanks in advance for your reply

I’ve just had my 3550 serviced but my serger could definitely do with a de-fluff and oil. I presume same principles apply? (obviously underside will look different). You take the fear out of cleaning the machines, thank you.

Yes the same principles applies to the serger. I have the Janome 3434D serger and I only remove the bottom.

HI Jeanette you are such a great teacher I recently got myself a Brother 2340 coverstitch machine. Sometimes I get skip stitches am using the needles that came with the machine. Tension on 2 Differential feed on 1 Stitch length on 4 but don't know why am getting skip stitches sometimes. Works great on cotton fabric not so great on knits Please let me know how to correct this problem Thank you

Did you adjust your presser foot? Get some different needles as those that come with the machines are universal. The ones you need for knits are 130/705 90/14 SUK BP. I get them on eBay.

Yes. It seems like the motor is not spinning hard enough to turn the wheel. If I take the belt off, then the motor spins.

Good afternoon, I got my sewing machine from my sister. She barely used it and it was in her closet for over 10 years. So I took it apart, oiled it and then turned it on. But it just wasn’t moving the needle. The engine runs. I opened it up again and checked the belt. Not sure what to do. It just seems like the engine is not strong enough to pull the wheel. Any suggestions? Thank you.

It depends on how much you use the machine, if you use it every day like I do, oil every 3 months. If you’re a light user then every 6 months. Either way, oil sparingly
