IMPORTANT - I messed up ;-), and figured something out, please read the description below for more info.
Due to popular demand, I've created this guide to descaling, cleaning & backflushing with the Sage or Breville Bambino Plus espresso machine.
A quick note first about a mistake I made while backflushing. Loads of other people have noted in forum threads etc., that they can't get the backflushing to work properly, the cleaning tablet doesn't dissolve, etc.,
When I was doing this, I couldn't see the lights around the buttons due to the studio lighting reflecting off the machine, but I could see on the video that it didn't appear that I was actually in the backflushing cycle here. So I doubled back & did it again, and I've figured something out.
1: I'm an idiot.
2: If the machine isn't blinking the 1 and 2 cup shot buttons intermittently to prompt you to backflush, all you're going to do when you follow the instructions, is to re-program the single shot button to the max length.
Meaning, that if you press the one and two cup shot buttons for five seconds as per the instructions, or however long you want, and then press the single shot button, you're now into re-programming the single shot button, and you'll just basically do one backflush for about 60 seconds.
So - if you want to do a backflush without the machine automatically going into the backflush cycle after 200 shots or whatever it actually is - just do a manual backflush.
To do this, whack your cleaning tablet in, and then pull a shot four or five times, basically until your tablet has more or less fully dissolved and is now sitting as soapy bubbles in the drip tray. Just remove the portafilter and have a look after four shots, if the tablet has gone, start rinsing, if not give it another shot.
Then empty the drip tray, and pull a couple more shots until the water going into the drip tray is now clean, and you're done.
That's just the backflushing, I didn't mess up the rest ;-), so you can watch the video for descaling and cleaning the steam wand tip, etc.
Please ignore the fact that I've put a bowl under the group when backflushing, I was mindlessly following the instructions when I did this ;-), but it seems the instructions are currently out of date - at the time they were created, the machine shipped with a cleaning disk with a hole in, so water would come out of the portafilter. Now, though, the Bambino Plus has a blind backflushing disk, so the water doesn't come through the portafilter, it goes directly into the drip tray, so you don't need a jug or bowl when backflushing. You do need a large container when doing the descaling though.
Also, the thinner needle bit on the steam tip cleaner is intended for cleaning the holes in the basket.

You are my hero. I cleaned mine yesterday, but when no water came out of the portafilter during the process, I figured something was wrong. That brought me to your video and the correct instructions. Thank you so much. As someone else mentioned, Breville should hire you! Love this machine, by the way. Have had it for just over a year, along with the breville dose control pro. I debated between that set and the barista express. Very happy with my decision. And your videos are very helpful. Cheers from Canada!

Don't know if others have mentioned - but it IS possible to force a backflush outside of the 200-shot cycle. Press and Hold 2-Cup and Steam buttons for 5 seconds when the machine is in standby - then go from there :)

I'm going to try this. Bravo says to hold the one cup and 2 cup for 5 seconds and it doesn't do anything different than holding the one cup into cup for 2 seconds which enters the shot timer modification mode. Very frustrating hahaha.

By far the best instructions for caring for the Breville Bambino + . The instruction manual leaves so much out. (e.g. that there is a fine needle on the tool and that you would use the 1 cup basket when backflushing and soaking the basket and portafilter) At some point it would be great if you would redo do the video to include the lessons learned (e.g. waiting for the backflush signal before backflushing, not needing a bowl for backflushing .

Important note, Dec 2022, re Backflushing. Someone has contacted me to tell me their Barista express has come with a disk with a hole... They thought they'd been sent old stock, however, I've spoken with Sage, and some models are now shipping with a disk with a hole in, which is something to do with a slightly different firmware version which can detect prolonged higher pressure. So if you do get any machine with a disk with a hole, this is why, and you'll just need to put a bowl under the portafilter if this is the case. By the way...If you're in the UK, and you're thinking of buying a Sage machine (any Sage machine, not only their coffee machines), join my mailing list at coffeeblog.co.uk and then drop me an email to see if I have a current discount code to share. I don't currently get Breville discounts, sorry, but I do sometimes have Sage Appliances UK discount codes to share. Ta Kev

Cheers for this my. Lights just came on for the first time, well. Over 200shots and a whole year of use. My last coffee machine needed descaling once a month so I've go into the habit of pulling blank shots after everyday of use which has probably helped lengthen the time between descale.

Thanks for this particular guide - sorted me out. I would say many Bambino Plus owners will find this helpful. #sageappliances manual absolute rubbish as well as their customer support, but I love their Bambino Plus from day one. The "2L container under the portafilter/steam wand" part had me scratching my head too (did the cycle per the manual, then checked the video to see if I missed anything), thanks for the clarification. Also, pretty sure it went to backflushing mode after 200 shots, I had bought it 3 months earlier and I usually pull 2 or sometimes 3 shots per day, so that adds up. I don't expect to see the de-scaling prompt for a while since I use filtered water.

Great video, I love this machine but I found the backlashing instructions very confusing, now thanks to you it's clear! One observation however is that after backflushing soap was still coming through the basket with the water so its a good idea to do a couple of one cup operations with an empty basket so that all the soap is flushed out of the machine

Your video guide to cleaning the Bambino Plus is clear and helpful. You fill in huge gaps left out of the manual, for example that no water will come out of the portafilter and which basket to use. When I cleaned my machine, I found water had escaped from under the machine and was on the counter. The drip tray was not full. What did I do wrong?

Thank you so much, the book is rubbish at giving a detailed description of how to clean. My tablet didn’t totally disappear so I set the cleaning program to run a second time. While you can backflush this way it is not running the actual cleaning cycle, this only activates after 200 shots and is indicated by the single and double shot lights flashing alternately (also while the cleaning cycle is running). In this case, the cycle runs several times in order to properly dissolve and flush through the tablet - what you actually just did was a single shot quantity set. Tip for de-scaling - don't waste money on sachets of descaler, just buy citric acid powder in bulk (which is what the sachets contain) and use 25g per cycle, WAY cheaper and the product also has many other uses...

Eventually went back to standby and we're all good. Also, I can't get it to start the cleaning cycle from off, I need to turn the machine on, get the blinking one shot two shot lights then press them both for 5 seconds to go into cleaning mode for it to start.

@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Caroline 👍😀. Re cleaning the grinder, I've not done a video of this yet but I will do. Regular cleans, I'd just take off the hopper and top burr, tip it up, give the inner burrs a brush, brush any grinds from the chute, give the top burrs a good brush before putting back in. If you want to go a bit further, get a vacuum hose in there, down on top of the inner burrs, and then also into the grinds chute. Also you can run some puly grind through: coffeeblog.co.uk/puly-grind-review. Or you can just use uncooked rice, apparently achieves a similar aim. Cheers

@@CH-wo8mx I have to admit, I completely neglected the smart grinder pro for at least the first couple of years ;-), I don't think I cleaned it once - and it's still fine after over 4 years of use, so I wouldn't worry too much. I do think it depends on the kind of beans you use though, if you're using darker roasted oily beans, then it's probably more important to regularly clean. Cheers, Kev.

So I went on a coffee fast for 30 days and have gone to use my machine again realising I didn’t remove the basket 🤦🏼‍♀️😭😭😭 I left the old grinds in the basket and attached to the machine. I know coffee making sin. 😳🤯😭😭😭 I’ve taken it off today, it has green mold on grinds, the mesh basket tiny holes and also on the top of where the the machine where the basket sits in the circle. I’ve of course pulled apart the basket, the wall and even unscrewed the shower piece but I’m so concerned about mold in the tiny holes. What’s your advise on cleaning this moldy situation???? Thank you so much. Really kicking myself here.

@Coffee_Kev 3 жыл бұрын
Oops! I've done this myself (not been on a coffee fast but when not using my own machine for a while when reviewing another one). It's not a huge deal. I'd take off the shower screen and put this and the basket in very hot soapy water for a while to loosen it all off, then get some puly caff, dissolve some of that in not water and leave them to soak in that for a while. Maybe portafiter too but only the metal part, try not to submerge the handle. If it makes you feel better you could also put them to soak in a sterilising solution too. Will be good as new.

This video is wonderful and answers alot of questions I have about the cleaning process! Thanks so much for posting! I have a question I hope someone can help with. I was washing my water tank the other day and at the bottom there is a mechanism with a spring in it that you can push in and out. I did not think this was removable, and normally when I am washing with soap and water I will push in and out a few times to clean it. However, this time it completely popped out. After draining the water, I was left with a spring and a little plastic piece. I am pretty sure that there is supposed to be a little rubber gasket maybe. I think it went down the drain. Now I cannot get this plug to go back into the bottom of the water tank so I can use it. I have put in a ticket to Breville but never received a response. I would prefer to purchase the little rubber piece, assuming there is one and I didn't just break the water filter, but I don't know what the description would be to order online, or if you can order this online or not. I would prefer not to have to purchase a new water tank, but I will if needed. Has anyone else had this issue? Is this supposed to be removed? Thanks in advance!
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan 😀. Re the missing piece, you'll need to get hold of Breville support - what I'd do is take a photo of the piece in question (the mechanism I mean) and tweet this at the Twitter account of Breville for your country, so @BrevilleUSA if you're in the states - mention that you have had no reply from support, and if they dont come back to you I'd keep tweeting them. I dont know why they're not responding to your ticket but I think you'll get a response this way. Cheers

Hi Marina. I'd only do it with a cleaning tablet when prompted, but you can also do water only backflushing more regularly if you like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJfWi5KggZKqj80 I usually use Puly caff for soaking the wand tip etc., but any kind of cleaning solution should be fine. Cheers, Kev.

@@Coffee_Kev thanks. I always do a blank shot after each cup of coffee I make to clean off residue coffee anyway, so then I’ll just wait for the prompt and use a tablet then. Hi, first of all thank you for the clear instructions! I have a question, according to the manual you have to do the cleaning cycle after 200 extractions. Apparently, the bambino will tell you to do the cleaning cycle. Should I listen to the machine or clean it more often. I won't be pulling 200 shots a month.
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Wilmar. Yeah it only puts itself into the backflush cycle after 200 shots, which is a lot of shots per clean. Personally I recommend regular manual backflushing (just pulling five or 6 short, 10 second shots with the backflush disk in) without a cleaning tablet, so just a water only backflush. I'd recommend daily, or every couple of days - water only. The fact that the manufacturer has set it to 200 shots would suggest that they think backflushing with detergent will cause wear, so I'd recommend backflushing with cleaning disk/powder just when prompted every 200 shots, but do regular water only backflushing. Cheers.

@@Coffee_Kev That's a good point, but unfortunately, pulling an extra 6 shots every day or 2 will artificially add to the 200 shot counter. I reckon I'll do what you say but when it prompts for a backflush cycle, I'll do it without a cleaning solution except for when it's been 3 months since the last backflush with cleaner (I make 200 cups over 3 months).

@@Coffee_Kev As far as I can tell you are not entering the real cleaning/backflush cycle when you just push the 1&2 cup button when the lights aren't flashing alternately, but you are entering the programming mode instead. When the machine is really in cleaning/backflush cycle it doesn't heat the water or not as much (absence of steam) and it does multiple flushes, with pauses in between. When you do it the way you suggest it tries to pull/program a single shot and gives a lot of steam/gargling noise. Is it really safe to do it this way?

Not sure if you've discovered this already but at least on the Bambino Plus, it is in fact possible to initiate a manual cleaning cycle before the prompt as follows (page 15 in manual: 1) The user can also manually enter the cleaning cycle mode before the cleaning cycle alert is triggered. Press and hold 2 CUP and STEAM buttons simultaneously for five seconds when the unit is at off mode (all lights are off) 2) At this point, 1 Cup and two Cup will illuminate and pressing either, will begin the cleaning cycle (1 cup & to cup will flash alternately during the cycle). ** Important Note, machine needs to be off before following the steps above **

Is it normal to have a puddle of water underneath the tray every single time the solenoid valve is in use (pressurised baskets)? Or huge puddle after performing cleaning cycle/backflush? Had it on the new machine I bought a month ago, and the replacement as well, hence concerned. First Sage said it shouldn't be doing that, then after reporting the same problem with 2nd machine, they said it's normal, and they shouldn't have replaced it in the first place... No problem :-). For backflusing I'd use Puly Cafe, so much cheaper than buying the tablets. For descaling personally I'd use the Sage / Breville descale liquid. I'd usualy recommend whatever the manufacturer recommends when it comes to descaling, and you don't have to do it all that often unless of course you're in a particularly hard water area - but for backflushing, it's something you should do fairly regularly, the tablets are really expensive, and I can't see any major difference between them and the puly powder when I've looked at the active ingredients. Cheers Kev

As some others have said, you did not actually perform the cleaning cycle. Holding down the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons allows you to program the volume for each. The manual states this clearly on page 11 under “PROGRAMMING SHOT VOLUME” You should note that on page 14 under “CLEANING CYCLE” it says that while the cleaning cycle is under way, the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons with alternatively flash. Good indicator that what you did is not the cleaning cycle. If you’ve followed this guys instructions and now have a unnecessarily large 1-cup or 2-cup volume, you can reset these to the factory settings by following instructions on page 16 of the manual. It’s very easy to find on google. You could also follow the steps this guy says is the cleaning cycle (actually reprogramming the shot volume) and set a custom volume yourself.

You only held for a couple seconds so you just reset the shot button, you didn't enter a cleaning mode. You have to hold it for 5 seconds supposedly and then it supposed to flash while it's functioning just like when it initiates it on its own and forces you to do a backflush. No matter how long I hold the button so it never seems to enter the backflush cleaning cycle. You basically just pulled one really long shot but it couldn't relieve the pressure so I'm assuming it didn't initiate a second shot and you still had a bunch of that tablet in the portafilter and had to manually keep turning on a shot until it cleaned?
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev Жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's a note in the description about that. This is an old video, in this one I thought you could make the machine go into backflush mode, it's not that I didn't press it for long enough, it's that you can't get it into backflush mode when not prompted to do so. To use the machine-led backflushing you have to do it when prompted. Cheers.

If your water is soft, you don't get limescale with other appliances, and you're happy with the taste and the quality of the water, my personal opinion on that is there's no need for either. Some would say you may still be better off doing one or two descales per year to be on the safe side, and I can see the point, but I'm also in an area with fairly soft water, I've never bothered with descaling as we just don't get scale on other appliances so it's not something I really worry about. Absolutely loving your videos! As well as Bambino Plus! Something doesn't work the same way on my machine though... I have the one with the cleaning disc with a hole in it - and I can't put it in a cleaning cycle manually - I have to wait for the 1cup/2cup flashing to go through cleaning cycle, and it will need a container under the portafilter (quite a lot of water coming out because of the hole in the cleaning disc). Does this mean the older (I'm guessing my machine is older) machines don't do backflushing at all? If I try to put it in cleaning cycle manually by holding 1cup/2cups for 5 seconds it will go into programming shot volume mode, nothing else... And if the machine is off it will also reset it to factory espresso volume as far as I know... Not sure if I'm doing something wrong here? Also - smaller needle can be used to clean holes in pressurised portafilters:-)
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks :-). Yes I think they started out with the disk with the hole, and at some point changed it to a blind disk. Actually, I made a mistake in this video, and I'm not going into the cleaning cycle either! I couldn't see the lights around the buttons due to the studio lights reflecting from the machine, but you can see it better from the angle of the camera than the position I was looking from, and it doesn't look like I've actually taken it into the backflush cycle, which makes sense as I'd expect it to have lasted longer. So I tested it, and it appears that you can't actually get it into the auto back flush cycle until it wants to take you into it, at the 200 shot mark or whatever. What I was doing (and I suspect what some others have done too) is that I've ended up simply pre programming the single shot button for the max length, this is what happens if you follow the instructions but not at the point that the machine is prompting you to it. But we're just backflushing here, so we don't need the machine to do it for us, it's really simple. To backflush manually, just put a cleaning tablet (or cleaning powder) into the blind basket and pull some shots until the powder or tablet has gone through. I've done an update video on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIOwgYqXnLB4mck You could contact Sage/Breville to ask them for a blind disk, but otherwise you just need to blank off the hole somehow. Cheers
