I've been working on restoring some older pipes I was given (nothing crazy, just some heirloom pipes from my family) and I was wondering what you mean when you say the pipe had a 'filling'.

Thx for asking. Sometimes when the briar block isnt perfect the wood has some flaws and potholes. Afther the pipe is carved the pipemaker of factory now fills this spot with woodpuddy or some type of material. In that way the pipe can be sold instead of it going in the bin. Now, thats often the case for cheaper pipes since this isnt visibly appealing and most costumers or pipemakers seek out the best possible briar. So facory pipes often has a subbrand for pipes with flaws and will that gets sold cheaper. Freehand pipemakers will just often sandblast the pipes that arrent 100% perfect. Stanwell pipe factory had several "brands" or lines under the Stanwell brand for releasing cheaper pipes that didnt make the quality check for their main Stanwell pipes. This could be pipes wilth these FILLS. Sometimes i see "real" Stanwell pipes with these fills witch really bothers me :) When thats all said and done.. Fills is mainly a athstetic issue and the pipe works 100% fine mechanicly.

@@thomasebdrup That makes a lot of sense. I think all of these are cheaper pipes, like old Grabow sister brands, so I'll keep a look for that as I'm working on the pipes to see if they have any and too learn to identify them if so. Thank you for the helpful reply
