Hey all! So excited to announce that I found FROG SPAWN in my pond today! Whoop! I've posted a photo in the 'Community' tab on my KZbin channel. Have a look and celebrate these little froggie eggs with me! Fingers crossed that my allotment garden will be hopping with little green slug-eating froglets this year :)

Ooh, I didn't realise frogs laid that early, nice one! Thanks for showing this, you've given me something to look forward to on my winter wasteland allotment!
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
Isn’t it crazy how early they lay? It might be an Isle of Man thing since the winters are generally mild here. Taking a guess in that though. It would be interesting to research it more.

I live in Southeast Georgia, USA. Our experience is the same, February. It is amazing how much joy frog eggs can bring. I love wildlife. I enjoy your videos. I wish you abundance for your efforts.

Oh Golly The Frog Princess. Congrats. The pond looks fabulous after your cleaning. It must have been cold on your hands ? You're amazing Tanya. Fantastic videos you make.

Haha I like your list of essentials Don't worry to much about algae as its food for tadpoles in the first few weeks of life The algae only grows on dead matter and helps release nutrients to other pond plants. So it is important to leave some in there. Just as long as its not to clogged up it should be fine. If you look at algae with a magnifying glass you will see its full of tiny life. Thanks so much for sharing this video!
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The coffee was the most important essential :) hehe I left all the bottom sludge so hope that will keep the pond life going. The filament algae was a right mess though. No doubt it will be back choking the pond up soon enough!

You would never regret building a pond! It’s the highlight of my allotment garden :)

Have you looked into a small solar bubbler to keep the algae in control? I want to build a tiny wildlife pond this spring and am researching the bubblers, not sure if there is a reason you aren't using one.

correct me if I am wrong but I believe the tadpoles need the algae and decaying leaf matter for food
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
They do :) There’s plenty still in the bottom of the pond though. Probably two inches of dead leaves at the bottom that I left in place. There’s also a lot of algae that I wasn’t able to remove around the flag iris roots.

I have a pond recently dug with an excavator about size of swimming pool for my geese that I no longer have; I had to add leaves so many tadpoles that the water was super clear; all the best

You want to get yourself a little hand net and leave by your pond so you can clean the duck weed out every couple of days , and a little wobbly stick to clean out the algea just put it in the pond and twist it round it will collect the algea . Tadpoles will stay as tadpoles for a fair while because there is to many and not enough food for all so some stay as tadpoles .apart from that excellent work I look forward to see how the pond progresses 🐬🐋🐳🦈

Didn’t know tadpoles could overwinter in the pond. We’ve duckweed in our pond but none of the slimy blanket weed. Don’t think our frogs have returned yet.
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
It’s weird. I watched as loads of last year’s tadpoles formed legs and some didn’t. Looked into it and apparently they can remain tadpoles for a very long time! Didn’t expect any to have bedded down for the winter though. They’d better grow their legs this year or I’ll be cross! :)

Lovely Greens • Gardening, Beauty & Beekeeping We have some fish in our pond that like to feast on frogspawn but as we have frogs returning every year I assume some survive. The fish produce some offspring each year and they are difficult to spot. I’ll be on the lookout for tadpoles this spring.

A back garden tale of survival of the fittest! I’d be interested to hear if you find any pre-spawn tadpoles this spring.

Optimally, there would be the correct composition of plants and animals to do the cleaning for you. The best way to get the pond oxygenated is with flowing water. Just have a network of ponds at different altitudes with a stream of water connecting them. The lower ponds will have enough oxygen-rich water to sustain life.
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
Agree but sometimes that’s just not possible. I’m looking into pump ideas at the moment though :)

I emptied my little pond last week and need to fill it again next week! Its only 6 months old so don't expect any frogs this year :-(
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
You never know! Get it filled and who knows what will happen. I’ve heard of frog spawn in mud puddles before.
@wjames56456 жыл бұрын
Hope you didn’t fill it back up with tap water 🙈🙈🙈😳😃😃
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure it's from a city water line or from one of the farm water supplies. There's never been a smell of Chlorine in it though so think it's pretty safe for the froggies :)
@adamschaeffer14366 жыл бұрын
Even if there was a little chlorine in the water it will diffuse out within a matter of hours, especially being so open and in the sun. Tap water is not usually very good for aquatic settings but since its so early in the year I doubt anything was harmed.
@Lovelygreens6 жыл бұрын
I am slightly worried now. However, I filled my pond with the same water this time last year and the resident frog didn't seem to have an issue with it at the time. I'll go have a peek at the pond later today to see what's happening.
@joeyoliver5796 жыл бұрын
I agree with Adam Schaeffer. One trick my dad taught me was if you absolutely have to use tap water, fill a bucket (or two or three) and sit them out for 2-3 days before using. Most of the bad stuff will evaporate out very quickly and you should be fine.

We call Duck weed -andemad= duck food. Ducks eat it, you know? Scoop it up with their bill as they swim in a lake!☺ But hardly in your pond ☺
