How to clean the paten and chalice.
[Chants by Monks and Metropolitan Choirs of Kiev Pechersk Lavra]
Notes from The Rt. Rvd. Dr. Augustine:
The blood of Christ has been in the chalice and we do not want to pour any of it out or dispose of it in a common or unthoughtful manner.
After Holy Communion, and the chalice is removed to the Credence table, follow these steps:
1] Pour a little more wine into the chalice, while rotating the chalice. Start at the rim and let it flow down into the chalice so as to rinse the entire interior of the chalice.
2] Drink this wine while rotating the chalice. Sip a bit, rotate a bit, sip, rotate to another spot, sip, etc. until all of the chalice has been rinsed in this manner.
3] Pour water into the chalice as in step 1 above.
4] Drink the water as in step 2 above.
5] Repeat steps 3 & 4 as necessary.
6] Wipe out the chalice and around the rim on the outside until it is dry and clean with the purificator.
7] use your finger to feel inside the chalice. It should not be sticky if the chalice is clean. If it is sticky, repeat steps 3, 4, and 6.
