How did they NOT know the house they moved into is in a flood zone?? Why did they store moving boxes on the first level? How did they NOT hear the newscasts of the coming atmospheric river??

How could they not have warned? The news never quite talking about it for a week before it got here. Also you live on a river what do you expect

What do you mean you didn’t get enough notice

These people are the kind of folks that move next to an airport then start complaining about the noise! How you gonna buy a house on the banks of a river that floods nearly every year, has been raised due to flooding, see high water mark signs and warnings all over town, and still be ignorant enough to say " we didn't have enough warning" ?! I don't live anywhere near there and I still know about how bad the Russian River Floods! Now they want a hand out.. Oh Brother!

I feel badly for the couple, the timing of moving in was just horrible for them, but that house is lifted to three stories for a reason. Far more homes were damaged in 1986, and twice in 1995, then the houses were getting raised but there was never provision for safe car parking, and people so often become complacent and want to store their things inside that very tall covered space. It’s a beautiful place and I miss living there but I don’t miss the sheer amount of work it took to prep for winter floods.

or the mold!! I definitely don't miss that

It’s no secret that homes along the Russian River are subject to flooding. If this couple was uninformed of that during their home buying process, they should have grounds to sue for lack of disclosure. The river communities are lovely places to live-until the river floods. I’d never buy property in that flood zone.

I'm pretty sure they know. When they buy insurance they would be told they are in flood zone and need to buy flood insurance. They probably don't think it would be this soon.

Those were summer homes which at some point were turned into year-round permanent residences. They flood nearly every year we get a decent amount of rain. The water staining is evidence of that.

It's a good spot. My Great grandfather was born there in 1876. A little water never hurt anyone. lol You don't have a boat?

Cause it's beautiful, and if I could I'd live there. I'm so saddened by the amount of judgement of the people dealing with this, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering who was just re-elected. Have we forgotten compassion and empathy?

They should have insurance for their business, it would help to cover the cost of the tools

Shame. Happens every year that's why those cabins are on stilts. The landlord should have told them not to store in the basement in winter. Its a summer tourist area, and rainy, cold and damp most of the winter, plus the road in and out is dangerous and prone to closures. Best to live inland

ppl need to start building their buildings 1 maybe 2 stories above the ground. ppl who live in flood zones are stsrting to build their houses on stilts. sure its a hassle dealing with stairs but ur not gonna have to deal with as much clean up. thats why that couple was able to buy that house... i bet u the last home owner got out and was tired of the constant flooding. if anything invest in a house boat and tie it off in a way that it can rise with the flood waters but dont go anywhere.

...... It IS on stilts. Virtually every home below the high flood stage is there
