Don’t pay a plumber to do this. Get a metal hanger Pinch the hanger hook so the gap is about 1/2 inch … Pull the large hanger portion to lengthen the hanger in a somewhat straight section. Place hook end into drain pipe(after you have remove the grate)while slightly pushing the hook end in keep turning/ twisting the other end of the hanger.. pull up to remove your wives hair. … repeat… there is ALWAYS MORE THAN one hair clump.

I’m a plumber and I’m inclined to agree as far as showers and bath clogs go. The only difference is that I don’t recommend a hanger to unclog your shower as it’s not as effective as using a plunger or a shop vac. Tub and shower clogs are some of the easiest clogs to clear. 9 times out of 10 you just need to plunge them. Also tubs need the overflow covered in order to create a seal for the plunger or else youll just displace the air through that overflow. One of the few exceptions to the plunger and shop vac is if you have galvanized steel drains. Then it either needs to be snaked or cut out all together

Also as the creator mentioned the proper way to clean a drain is to use a snake (or some other method but we will stick with the snake for arguments sake) when you snake the drain you can guarantee that it won’t clog for a while (with reasonable usage of the drain) it’s *cleans* the drain almost like new. That’s why a company can charge someone for a drain cleaning and offer something like a 6 months warranty. However if the drain cleaner or plumber is worth his salt that drain won’t clog again for years. Most notably with kitchen sink clogs which tend to be stubborn and reoccurring. A good drain cleaner will recognize the cause of the clog (for example heavy grease build up) and in that case snake the line and make several passes with the snake (not just one or two passes) all the way in and all the way out pulling is back slowly. And then running some dish soap and cold water several times to get it squeaky clean. And I use cold water because I find that when I use hot water directly after snaking a kitchen sink drain it tends to cause stuff to melt and expand which makes me have to do it all over again.
