Why do they charge 1600 for the championships entry even when its not in Kona? Is that to cover the bigger prize money? The 2 day format doubled the entries to 6k, but the prize stayed the same

Mr Messick's answers and attitude sum up to me what Ironman as an organization has become and he seems well qualified to carry the brand. Clash, PTO and local for me...anything but Ironman. The reality is they don't need me or anyone who feels the same way. "You are an Ironman" will always be their free pass to whatever business model they choose regardless of how corporate cutthroat it is.

Mr Messick is not a confident CEO. The questions he was asked were reasonable and are questions we’d all like answered. His evasive, dismissive and condescending answers are a strong indicator that Ironman is in trouble. I’ve completed 18 Ironman events (both 70.3 and 140.6) since 2012. I once thought I’d compete in Ironman well into my 70s, now I am not sure if I’ll return to Ironman. I didn’t change, Ironman did.

I’ve now listened to the full interview - don’t think either managed to land their points across - basically are Ironman driven by quantity over quality for the world champs and should they offer a percentage of the revenue to pros - maybe a hybrid approach with PTO providing the finding of pros for return of any media revenue ? Seems to work for the premier league although triathletes generally don’t suit driving around in Bentley’s and wearing over priced watches

Jack did a fantastic job by asking the right questions and not giving up when Messick tried to avoid them. On the other hand, all Messick did was either try to sell his story (that Jack clearly wasn't buying) or derailing the conversation when Jack asked the same question again. That said, the most important questions were left unanswered: why not make WC a real championship event by raising the standards to qualify; why not limit the number of participants so they could all fit into 1 day; if the race is split into 2 days, why not hold it in the same location at the same weekend; status of pros and their salaries.

@@gtn Me? No. I know the rationale behind the decision is money, more profit for Ironman. Messick summed it up quite good when he answered one of the questions by "we did what we believe is the best decision for Ironman" - as a company. And this is exactly what a lot of people think and know; it's the fact that Ironman tries to hide this and mask it by other factors that people can't accept. And Jack was trying to get exactly this question answered: are you doing it for the $$? He didn't get the answer.

Aloha, I attended the Kona race for 13 years from the 1990's through early 2000's. The locals loved the business the tourists brought in, and the commercialisation through the Kona week was a huge benefit to them. What went south was the way in which the IM organisation entitlement culture upset and offended many on the big island over the years. There is little doubt that the sourness of this relationship has eventually mirrored a can of rotten Dole pineapple. Mahalo.

They can easily cut the 17-hour time limit to 16. A quick look at the results shows that in the: - Female 60-64 category, 71 people finished the race. 2 didn't make the 17-hour cut-off. Out of the other 69, 56 people went under 16 hours, and 44 went under 15 hours. - Female 65-69 category, 23 finished. 17 went under 16 hours and 11 went under 15 hours. - Female 70-74, 8 people finished. 4 under 16 hours, 3 under 15 hours. - Female 75-79, only 2 people finished. - No female competed in the 80-84, 85-89, and 90+. Same story for the men, with even more people finishing under 16 and 15 hours. Cutting the time limit does not exclude older people. Ironman is just greedy.

Thank you GTN. I'm (48) have been doing Sprint triathlons for 10 years. I have never been on a swim team but grew up swimming for fun and was a lifeguard. I have never been what I consider a fast swimmer (2:00-2:05/100yds) and I have tried for years but nothing ever worked until a month or so ago. During a coach's corner episode Mark was answering a swimming question and made a hand/stroke gesture. I tried the motion, and it finally made my stroke click. For the last couple of weeks every swim is getting faster and faster. Today I swam a 1:51/100yd avg for my 1500yd swim. I look forward to watching your swim videos that just came out to hopefully find something else I can improve on.

I race in local low profile races and never took part in IM. I'm not a fan of the organisation. After listening to the interview in full I concluded: 1. IM desperately needs press person. 2. Nothing what Mr Messick said was controversial to me. The way he expressed it is another story. 3. It's naive to think that privately own company doesn't want to make money. I've never heard IM claiming their charitable character. 4. As long and people participate in IM in thousands and pros are doing the same, IM has no motivation to change anything. Happy racing, everyone!

Of course every privately owned company (especially in the hands of Private Equity) wants to make money. The way you won't make money is by taking a brand that everybody loves, then alienating your consumer base with terrible customer experience and plain arrogance, in the midst of a change in the industry through the PTO who are clearly capable of offering what people are missing from Ironman. If you want to make money, you need happy customers. At the current trajectory, it is only a matter of time before the alternatives to Ironman become too appealing to ignore, and the brand loses its value. We can only hope that the brand name survives the demise.

@@martijnvreys2910 I don't love the brand so maybe this is the reason I'm less emotional. From what I've heard not many events (if any) are organised as well as IM. And this is tempting for me although the price puts me off. I think that I'm not getting this special character of IM, magic of Kona, and all this bs about tradition like we were talking about some kind of cult.

Regarding the easing of the entry requirements for Ironman world champs, going from 2500 participants to 5000 overnight makes it clear mathematically that it is now easier to qualify since the number of qualifying races has clearly not doubled. This benefits everyone to some extent, but predominantly benefits the women who now have an equal 2500 spots while only having about one third or so of the participants in any particular qualifying race. Good for them and maybe it will cause the participation in the qualifying races to even out. However, some dilution has occurred, obviously. I qualified for Kona in 2023 (now Nice) and I was the only one in my age group. The second place guy was only 6 minutes behind. He likely will qualify elsewhere but he was certainly deserving of a spot as much as me. The beauty of Ironman from the beginning is that someone finishing at 16:59 was still considered to be a winner and an Ironman. If a person is 70 or 75 and wins his or her age group he or she should be welcome at the World Champs. The person who finishes and hour later, maybe not, that could happen and it is not a horrible thing because it maybe fulfils one person dreams while not impacting on anyone else’s dreams.

I have listened to the podcast. I thought for any Chief Executive Officer of a Private or Public Company with a brand and legacy such as Ironman to be openly disrespectful, argumentative and deliberately evade answering relevant questions from supporters of their brand should seriously consider stepping down, or at least his Board should seek to take the necessary steps to protect the franchise. (I was amazed that he had the audacity to be eating his sandwich whilst being asked questions-simply amazed). Given he was extremely reluctant to provide any numbers concerning IM because they were Private, it does not take an genius to get in the ballpark. (the following are rough assumptions but certain underestimated in revenue and overestimated in expenses gets us there) The IM website suggests there are 170 IM events annually. For ease, lets assume 50% in both full distance and 70.3 (yes I know there are other races but this is an estimation). Approx cost of a 70.3 IM place is $300 and full distance is $600. Approx revenue is $450m pa. We all know it will be significantly more than this if we include merchandise and fee sharing arrangements with the towns that host the events etc. Lets assume total expenses are 50% of revenue pa (unless distribution for investors or bonuses to the corporate are ridiculous). Again over estimated, but lets assume. Total profit is $225m pa. The total prize purse for the 70.3 was $350k and for full distance was $750k, totalling $1.1m. So the percentage the pro athletes are getting as a prize purse to assist in the growth the sport and of IM, generating publicity, media interest, broadcasting and sales equates to less than 0.5% of IM's annual profit or 0.2% of revenue. Is this fair? Far from it. Why wouldn't the pros just set up their own franchise? This situation always occurs in sport and business when the corporate believes they are bigger than the sport. I still cannot believe the arrogance of Andrew. Seriously, Advance Publications, the Dalian Wanda Group and Orkila you should be seeking a more professional CEO who is in tune with the 1% of the global population that love IM and its legacy. Disgraceful.

That first thing that Messick said is absolute bull sh*t! I've lived in Kona most of my life and the group of people I am around the most or locals that have never liked Ironman coming and this year was no different than any other year. There was a petition signing in Kona after the race for people who didn't want the race taking place over two days again, and only 100 people signed it. 100 of 20,000 people in Kona. The only reason the mayor is saying no is that he doesn't care about Ironman or the money that it brings to the island.

I listen to the whole podcast and I wrote Messick a handwritten letter in 2018 saying each age division should get 3 slot 1st through 3rd . No age division should get more slots simply because it has more people . In one Ironman race the 65-69 age race was decided by 7 seconds and yet ONLY the winner got that Kona slot . Same race in the 50-54 the 9th place man got a roll down and was 1hr 30 mins behind 1st place .I would not call that caring about that so called 10% of over 60 . Which I'm in that group and because of that method Im done with Ironman . And when a division has only 1 person in that Ironman race somewhere in the world , like 80-84 give the extra 2 slots up to the 75-79 . Reward the older athletes who show up , not the younger athletes who should have more in there division . In 1999 at IMFL we had over 400 in the 40-44 , 20 plus yrs later 55 in the 65-69 . Over time divisions shrink . With that in mind Messick should know this and reward all equally , he does not . So more races , more slots for younger athletes, with jobs and families cannot afford to stay in the sport or get injured trying . Older athletes cant race as much , but have more time . There is no balance in the sport within the Ironman Corp. In the sport since 1985 , did Kona in 1995 which is not the same sport or company . Thanks Mark for your input , Messick was not nice in anyway shape or form . Back to my roots of training for sprints and racing local . Its fun again and cheaper and my body feels alot better . Keep up the great job GTN does P.S Messick never wrote me back and I left my email to , zippo .

Seems like the CEO of Ironman doesn’t understand how slot allocation works. Jack: I think you are devaluing the ‘world championship’ by doubling the amount of spots’ Messick: so you think that if you’re over 60 you don’t deserve to go to Kona? Or if you can’t do under 12 hours you’re not allowed to race IMWC!? 10% of people who race IM are over 60. You’re saying that they don’t deserve to go to Kona. 🤨 But no, Andrew. That is not what he’s saying. If 10% of people are over 60, they get 10% of the slots. … but it should be 10% of 2500, not 10% of 5000. (smaller AGs actually usually end up over represented in slot allocation, but that’s a different discussion) Like, he genuinely does not understand how slots are allocated. It’s not about which AGs get the spots, but just there are too many spots. If you’re doing 14 hours as a F60-64 you are a super woman and deserve your IMWC spot. But if you’re doing 12 hours in M35-39 and coming 30th and getting a roll-down spot, that’s not really what ‘World Championship’ has meant to many who have raced Kona in the past decade or so in particular (after the entry lottery was ended).

Messick is a CEO of a private company that is only out to make money. Jack provided the daylight timing issue solution - to have smaller field, male pros, time gap, female pros, time gap, mass start males, gap, mass start females, and I’d add gap then legacy athletes. Everyone gets a go in a fair swim, smaller field means it’s the best of the best, drafting on the bike course could be less with a smaller field and all on one day. The reason they don’t want to entertain that idea is purely financial. As a tri couple, we can never race a world champs together, logistically and financially it’s prohibitive to do two separate WCs in a year so we won’t do any. Sadly there is an almost monopoly on the iron distance racing in Oceania region though and we are stuck with them :(

I haven't watched the whole thing but man, even just those few minutes, that was wild. In fairness to Messick, the interviewer was conducting the interview in a very unprofessional manner. If you want to ask a hardball question, ask it. Instead he just went on for minutes rambling just to get under Messick's skin. And from what I have read, he managed to do it. Messick could have played that angle instead, " do you have a question or are you just going to keep going preaching your race format manifesto" to try to get the interview back on track instead of just getting hammered by the other guy.

I listened to the first 20 minutes of the podcast where Messick talks about the problem of time between pros and age groupers. I think Messick made his point well about the older age groupers. He disagreed with Kelly about make it more difficult by cutting the time limit. Ironman wants all ages to participate in the championships. If you limit the time, older groups just do not finish in 12 or even 14 hours. Maybe cut the times to 12 hours for those ages who have 20 or even less people who can achieve those times and then combine a couple of ages to start at the same time. Keep the 17 hour cut-off for ages that need that time traditionally.

Why does every sport have to have a PRO category ? why do we have Pro ‘s doing Ironman if PTO is treating them so much better. Make Kona Like Roth…. Just limit the number that can go and make the Island peoples Happy…. If you Love Kona, just go when Ironman is not there, do the course and been doing that for years.. keep up the great 👍💪🙏🥂

The CEO responses was off the mark....however if it's true that there are more Europeans then Americans racing, IM is a for profit company, the IMWC is a amateur sport and not a true WC like other sports because they give away free slots to some people, the idea that IM is diluting the filed is silly. You can have 5,000 people race the IMWC and the élite AG's will still win regardless of field size. The argument that the IMWC is diluted is a bad argument. What would happen if the Pro's said that the IMWC is diluted because there are AG's race period? You can argue the location, price, etc but saying field size is dumbing down the race is a bad argument.

IM is a joke and I have always thought that. But do I still sign up for the races, yes. Do I think I over pay for them? Hell yes. But no one puts on a race like ironman. I love have big they feel. You dont get that at local races. I believe and hope that 10 years from now the PTO will have multiple events in a bunch of countries in the middle and long distance and that ironman gets pushed out and becomes a has been. I raced the Canadian PTO this last summer and it was absolutely great! They first international PTO event and it was wonderful! Way better than Ironman in my opinion. I can't wait for Ironman's take down. I feel sorry for athletes that have gotten IM tattoos because it is literally a brand they have tattoo upon themselves, a brand that doesn't care about athletes, a brand that cares about how much they can siphon out of us. It's a brand that I want to stop promoting, but when they have a big monopoly over races (and they know it, which is why they do and act this way) there's not many other options.

Regarding qualifying for a Ironman world championship. If you win your age group in an Ironman race and qualify for the world championship, are you racing against the same level of athlete or someone who got a spot because of the roll down system who placed 10th or 15th in their race. I got a spot and It was one of my slowest races and wouldn't have been in the top 20. It doesn't hold to much credibility to me as a Real World Championship. Are there other sports that have a roll down system or do you have to actually win a race. Ironman won't change the system because if they did the world championship entries would probably be a lot less than 50% of what it is.

Bit of misrepresentation here, I'd say. I'm by no means an IM apologist, and actually a big fan of Jack and HTT, but Jack was pushing hard on the notion of a one-day WC in Kona with more time separation between males, females and AGers. Messick was pointing out that this would impact start times/cut-off times and that, therefore, older/slower athletes would be the ones impacted. Also, Jack says that "everyone" wants this solution which is disingenuous as every female pro I've heard has celebrated having their own day while recognizing that racing in the same venue on different days would have been preferable.

From the many anecdotal conversations we experienced with locals this past October, it appeared the true “Hawaiians” have always been happy for the most part that the race is held there. It’s an annual tradition for them. It appears the transplants from the states, or from Oahu, who have moved to the island in the last 5-15 year, are the ones angry and complaining. This was actually pointed out to us several times by people identifying as native Hawaiians.

with IRONMAN being such an old competition compare to Crossfit, the pro atheletes should definately get paid more. Crossfit being only about a decade old pay its fittest male and female $250,000 respectively. Ironman makes a decent amount of money from the events and sponsors, that i am pretty sure they can afford to pay their elite athletes more and reognize their effort. It seems like Ironman as a corporation they are just more focus on signing in more people and care more about their proffits. Also they should do more the the adaptive athletes. make it more inclusive and support them better.

First, I agree this was not Messick's finest hour. I'd also say Ironman has desperately needed better communication staff for years to head off things like this. Their communication performance during the pandemic was abysmal and their handling of this Kona mess is just as bad. That said, how often have we heard a CEO - any CEO of a company that large - be completely transparent, non-evasive, and willing to lay all of their cards out on the table during an interview, especially one with tough questions? It doesn't happen because they'd get fired. It's an unrealistic expectation and Jack knew that too. It doesn't mean he shouldn't ask the questions, but feigning surprise and disappointment that they didn't get answered to his satisfaction is disingenuous. People are looking for something from Messick that neither he nor any other CEO could give in a similar situation. I'd suggest we all try to run a corporation like that, with all of the inherent demands, before assuming we'd be more transparent in that situation. That's the reason he shouldn't do interviews like this in the first place. Of course, then he'd be criticized for not doing interviews. To his credit, he's been interviewed on a lot of podcasts since this Kona news broke and has not been hiding. As for Jack, on another podcast several months ago, he did refer to older folks in triathlon, especially certain long-time contributors and former champions as "dinosaurs" who shouldn't be so involved in the sport anymore. My guess is Messick knew this and very poorly tried to link him to it by repeatedly implying Jack was biased. Bad decision. Again, they need better communication staff.

Each year there are more people around the Tri sport and i believe is more difficult to any organizer to try give a huge amount of considerations to each person, because in the deep, the brand born as a regular north american franchise company. Now everybody want an special treat just because they pay high prices!? The interview to me was more to try get exposed silly sentiments and conspiracy ideas in place to get information about what will be the near future of Ironman in general. PTO and Super League are more an Associates Business model. In the deep are very different models.

When it was announced that the race would be a two day format I thought it was a dumb idea. However I absolutely love seeing the women race on their own day and it was exhilarating and having the other standard race day was awesome this totally bums me out that the residence of Kona can’t celebrate what is arguably the only important event on that island all year long

It definitely feels like the ironman company has become more of a business now rather then the holy grail. Covid was a good example when at first they didn't want to give racers there money back. Ironman should be about the athletes and not the bottom line. Unfortunately when you get business people running events like this the passion goes and it's all about profit over athletes. Keep kona as the event for the elite etc.

Messik really doesn't rhyme with smart here - but in general, Ironman has opted for a business model, not for the artificial myth of the sport. That's what most don't like. Perhaps things are a little more complicated than they first appear. Ironman has become expensive and entry revenue could be 1.5ml euros plus sponsorship, merch, fees from authorities etc. totalling a huge amount for each event organised. On the other hand not much of this revenue goes to pro athletes (Alpine slalom athletes seem to make 550k for a first place) as well as Ironman marshals receiving little or no remuneration. Where does all that money go. On the other hand, there is apparently revenue generated for each area where the event is held by bringing in tourism and fresh revenue from the influx of competitors and their families. Still, behaviour and attitude from a CEO of a larger sized company was pretty poor and sets a bad example for the organisation. For a company trying to get over the woes of Covid-19 like everyone, it doesn't look good

I don‘t get it - why don‘t they change it to a Ironman Hawaii 1day (women and men format) race - a race like any other but very special, very prestigious… just like Wimbledon or the Tour the Frace and make Videos and everything. AND a two day World Championships format on another place, changing every year. Just like 2022 was with Utah. That was fun to watch and we had two (or 3) days of very special Triathlon racing. Hawaii is Hawaii - so it stays special. And with the other „real“ World Championships you can promote a second 1 Tier Race. It‘s like they have it in other sports…. and it‘s working!
