It depends on what your time Horizon is I retired last year at age 62 now I've got a big chunk of change will I invest in the S&P 500 no why Because the S&P 500 is highly overvalued I won't go into all the metrics but back in 2000 the S&P 500 was trading at 14 46 and then crashed not returning to the prior peak of 1446 until the Year 2007 So if you don't need your money for at least 10 years yes I most definitely would be shoveling it to the S&P 500.

What Brian is saying is historically true (although don't forget 1929 or 2009). However, if you are on the downhill side of your life, you can not survive a down turn in the stock market in your retirement years. If you believe, like I do, a crash is coming within the next 5 or 10 years. Get out and buy gold. If you are young, it's a different story

So why ETF over index? Just wondering. I’m investing into VFIAX Index fund in my Roth IRA but I’m considering opening up a brokerage account to move some of my emergency fund into the S&P 500 after hearing your advice. Curious if I should stick with VFIAX or go with a ETF.

ETF for taxable brokerage, they are more efficient because you dont get hit with dividend or rebalancing at ordinary income rates. Index for taxed Ira or 401k, fees are lower and taxes efficiency isn't as important.

For some brokerages, they don't offer index funds or a very limited amount. In my Index Fund vs. ETF videos, I say that I like both.

Odds for NOT LOSING money. ...And if we look at past 32 years, the odds for not losing money in 10 year period were 99.3% for global gov bond fund & 83.3% for SP500.

you have to adjust for valuations, those prior cycles, many of them had very low starting valuations... currently we're at Shiller PE of 37 which happened only once before in the 2000s and we all know what happened after that. However, this time around not only do we have high valuations, we have record Debt to GDP which is even higher than after WW2, we have very unfavorable demographic shifts, we have huge entitlement spending liabilities upcoming in Social Security and Medicare - it's a time bomb that is coming due, so the current context is very different.
