I impulse bought a montana f grandiflora. I have enough clematis that they volunteer in my yard but no montanas. I planted it in a pot yesterday and will go dig it out now! I have a large arching trellis on the northwest side that I grew a vigorous clematis on for years. It succumbed to over pruning (husband) and too much water. Once that old truck is established the plant will not sprout for there. This time I will peg it down and establish a few stems from the ground. Your plant is impressive and I am inspired. So glad I snatched it up. I live in 9b, Sacramento Valley. We have very hot dry summers. With a drip system and mulch most plants grow. My clematis all get a big flat rock to keep their roots cool. Beautiful job!

Persona Non Grata thank you for your kind comment. I would be surprised if too much water killed your last clematis, especially in the heat of California. I have to water mine everyday during the milder summers we get over here in the UK. However you seem to be doing everything right; lots of mulch, shade the roots with rocks and make sure it doesn't go without water during the growing season. Good luck and I look forward to seeing a video in years to come when your Montana is in full bloom!

Absolutely stunning Clematis Montana you have there - it's so beautiful! Loved the video and tips you've given, like showing the plant base - so helpful. I wanted to grow in my back garden, but train it to go horizontally along my fences. Do you think this would be possible?
@improvesheffield48245 жыл бұрын
Hi Rahman. Thank you for your kind comment. I think your idea is great. It's very important to train it to go where you want it to go straight away as it grows very quick and it's natural inclination is to grow upwards not horizontal. I hope your fence is strong as the clematis will add a lot of weight in years to come. Also, does your fence have gaps in it so that you can feed the new growth through the gaps and give it something to cling on to? If not you may have to attach a trellis or wires to your fence to give the clematis a stronger attachment. Strong winds that we're having atm may be a problem otherwise. Hope that makes sense.

This is so helpful. I have just inherited one which has got out of control. Dead looking stems at the bottom and goodness knows how long. I was going to hack and pray, but I will take some time now and try me best to untangle it and run the new growth down to cover the base. Thank you...
@improvesheffield48242 жыл бұрын
KayJohnsonArt thank you for your kind comment. If it's a really mature clematis that's been allowed to romp away with no training or control then it may be advisable to cut some of it back so you can "see the wood for the trees". You may need to open it up so you can get to the main canes and train those in a more horizontal manner. Don't forget that if the wall or fence that it's climbing up is north facing, it may be difficult to keep growth at a low level as it will always be reaching for the light. Good luck with what ever you choose to do with it.

Ma questa pianta a quale temperature resiste?e il fiore per quando periodo lo abbiamo?
@improvesheffield48242 жыл бұрын
Nel Regno Unito fiorisce a maggio. Nei paesi caldi coltivarlo nella zona più fresca e ombreggiata possibile e mantenerlo ben irrigato durante la stagione calda.

Absolutely stunning! How is it even possible for such a huge clematis to grow in a relatively small pot? How often do you feed and water the plant? Thanks!
@improvesheffield48243 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for your comment. The pot is about 24x18x12 inches. The clematis has evolved to grow up and through large trees so its roots are competing with those of any tree it's scrambling up. Therefore it will have limited space, water and nutrients to access. I feed it with a small amount of general fertilizer in early spring and just make sure it doesn't go without water during hot dry spells.

In general, do Clematis have shallow root systems, like for example an Azalea or Rhododendron?
@improvesheffield48243 жыл бұрын
Not sure. As their nature is to climb trees so are woodland plants like Rhododendrons, you may be right. I think it's important you keep the roots moist wherever it's planted.

Stunning display. Are these clematis Montana great for climbing the wall of the house? How big do these grow. Thanks
@improvesheffield48245 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind comment Nayan. If you want it to climb up a wall you will need to give it something to cling to and it will take over in a few years if you're not careful. Make sure you keep it well watered during hot spells and trim back every year after flowering if you want to keep it in check. I don't trim mine as it's planted in a large pot which helps to keep it in check somewhat.

I've just bought 2 clematis mayleen today. Going to plant them tomorrow, I can't wait for them to establish and bloom as well as yours has. How long has it taken for it to get to this stage?
@improvesheffield48243 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Nayan Mistry. Mine is around 15 years old. It's growing in a large trough so if you plant yours in the soil it should reach a substantial size quicker than mine. Make sure you give them plenty of room because they'll make 30 feet each in time. You can prune quite hard if you need to straight after flowering but I prune very little; I simply feed new growths into the entanglement of existing growth to give an extra depth to the flowering. I think the results speak for themselves. Oh, and enjoy the vanilla scent!
@nayanmistry46413 жыл бұрын
@@improvesheffield4824 I do have plenty of room for them thankfully. I have another clematis, Dr Ruppel that I've interspersed to give some interest throughout the season. I planted them today, with plenty of bone meal and clematis feed to get them started. Hopefully I get some of those wonderful vanilla scented flowers this season. 🤞👍

After watching your video I decided to get one. I ordered Montana Mayleen and got a healthy plant, but it died. After that i ordered several more different Montana varieties. On my 5th one right now. But its not doing too good either. The leaf tips get brown black. I live in zone 8b Texas. Gets about 97 or so around this time of year. I have mulched and put bricks on root. Any idea what i may be doing wrong? 😕 Appreciate your time

Thanks for your question Kiran. The fact that you live in Texas explains a lot. Plant the roots as deep as you can and plant it in shade. In Texas I would imagine you’d have to give it AT LEAST 10 litres of water every day between March and November when you don’t get heavy rain. It’s very much a cold climate plant as it likes a cool root run which may be difficult to achieve in Texas. Do you know of any others growing in your vicinity or are there local gardening groups you can ask for advice? So to sum up; plant it deep, give the whole plant plenty of shade and give it all the water you can when it’s growing.

Improve Sheffield. I haven’t seen any Montana varieties in my area but lots of regular clematis varieties. Guess i’ll just put a shade tarp or something on it and water it a lot in summer. Hopefully it will make it. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 Once again your Montana clematis is beyond gorgeous. Thank you 🙏🏽
@improvesheffield48245 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kiran. Once again I can’t emphasise enough the importance of getting the site as close to its natural environment as possible. This is why preparing the planting hole is so important. You need a hole at least twice the size of the rootball with lots of water retaining compost or horse manure dug well in and plant it as deep as possible. The other issue you may have if your part of Texas is very humid is the amount of fungus that may affect the plant, especially when you water it a lot also. Rot can quickly set in and cause the plant to die. I hope you try again and really give it the best start you can and please send me a picture or video if you’re successful! 👍🏻

I killed more than three Clematises and finally realized that I need to plant them at east side of the house as Clematises hate very strong sunlight and three digit temperature in the summer in Texas.

Improve Sheffield You’ve inspired me to grow one in a pot up and over an arch, with a bench under the arch. Your voice sounds similar? Did you post up a video at David Austin Rose garden a while back? :)
@improvesheffield48245 жыл бұрын
Yes Darren Harwood. I have a few videos taken at David Austin Roses. They are my most viewed videos. It’s good that you remembered. They’re all on my channel with a few other videos of gardens and other stuff that interests me. Basically, just me wandering about, waffling on about what I think about stuff! I’m glad I’ve inspired you to grow a clematis. I chose Mayleen because, after the flowers have finished the foliage is a lovely dark purple which contrasts nicely with other plants such as the yellow leaves Jasmine Fiona Sunrise that you get a glimpse of just to the left of the pot. I also have a yellow rose, Golden Showers climbing over the arch for colour during the summer. Please make sure that the pot is big enough, Belfast sink size at least or bigger and plant making sure the roots are in shade. Put some rocks on top of make a Little Rock garden if you have to. Obviously make sure the pot has good drainage but also make sure it never goes dry - there’s a lot of climber there drinking a lot of water during the summer months!

Darren Harwood, 2018 was probably the best it has flowered. The beginning of that long hot summer with little wind and rain in May meant that it held onto its flowers the longest I’d ever known. It looked full on this good for at least a month and had some flowers on it for a lot longer! m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqvEk2B4mduFhqM
