Recently in my office a chemical sensitivity issue came up so even though I wasn't asked to I stopped wearing fragrances out of respect. But as a fragrance lover, it was quite disheartening and I didn't feel like myself. I also realized that a lot of my coworkers wear fragrances as well! So, I recently started wearing just a couple sprays, like you said, toned it down and I feel like everyone wins. In fact, it makes you appreciate the fragrance more when it's just a subtle nuance to your character.

I like the first rule about being mindful of your environment. I love wearing perfume but at work I’m very mindful of not wearing anything too loud. I work in a place (school) where most folks are humble and I don’t feel comfortable wearing something too showy or opulent.

I would add as well, that wearing a fragrance out of season can sometimes be surprisingly lovely. I live in WA state where it's very temperate, and we don't have 4 sharp seasons. We have like 1 hot month, followed by a similarly wet/cool 3 seasons with some mild difference. However, wearing something really floral in the cold can be incredible. Wearing citrus or coconut in the winter can be amazing as well, like you said :) And fragrances shift and change in different humidity and temperatures. Aura by Mugler is one of those...it's dramatically different in different conditions, it doesn't even smell like the same perfume at all. I've had compliments, but also some kid said he smelled salad 😂 Anyway, my point is that it can be fun to be adventurous with that.

Bonjour Clémence. Toujours un plaisir de vous voir. I loved this video, so much of it resonated with me. I think Richard has stretched a few points out to make a list of 10. Most of the rules could actually be summed up with the first thing you said… “Wear what you want”. This is so true. If you enjoy a fragrance and it makes you happy then go ahead and wear it, even if it was not marketed for your gender, is niche or designer, or is EDT or EDP etc. Some of the points are good advice. I’ve blind-bought many fragrances, but never on the basis of one single review. If I have no way of sampling first I will always do a lot of research, especially for an expensive purchase. If I get the opportunity to test a fragrance I will ALWAYS spray it on skin, and I will ALWAYS wait for the dry-down. I never use tester strips or paper and never make a decision on the opening scent, it’s not going to last long. I have no time for ‘fragrance snobs’… the kind who say that you can only be an enthusiast if you wear a fragrance that it somehow ’challenging’ or that other people will find distasteful. That is garbage. What’s wrong with enjoying a fragrance that makes you smell nice, whether it cost a lot or not? There are good and bad niche products, just as there are good and bad designer products. I do take care with how much I spray (although I sometimes get it wrong!) as I think you should be respectful of the people around you. I like my fragrance to be noticed, but I don’t want to overwhelm or offend. Just as you (probably) wouldn’t walk into a room shouting “Look at me. Look at me!”, I think your fragrance should be noticeable to those closer around you but not overpower a room. I could go on and on about this, but I’ve already written too much… sorry about that. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us. I look forward to seeing you again soon x

I think you're right and the fact to wear what you want is definetly the title of the book and the other rules the chapter of the story if I can say. It's good that you take the time to sample your fragrance or test it on skin. I will never be brave enough to just buy something based on one single review ! Haha I love how you describe the fragrance snob. Garbage. Yes, yes, yes. But I guess there have to be some everywhere ! It's just something I can't deal with too, and also those people tends to very superficial at the end ! Anyway, I could write an essay on that ! Im not very a 'look at me! Plenty of good, common sense guides here. I started my journey into Oriental Spicey fragrances with Floris Honey Oud (£160 100ml). Not exactly a bargain basement fragrance, but beautiful quality. From there I have extended into Chopard Oud Malaki (£50 80ml) and several Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud (£23 75ml). I have enjoyed them all and while the Floris is a truly class act, these less expensive perfumes are extremely good vs their cost. The Swiss Arabian is a particularly big hitter for the money and I hope you have an opportunity to try it at some point.

@@clemenceccfragrance You're welcome. Given your love for Honey Oud I think you will almost certainly like Shaghaf Oud. Sure, Floris uses natural oud oil and honey (high quality), while the Swiss Arabian uses synthetic oud and praline, but the basic concept of a sweet gourmand oud is common to both and, in cost, there is no comparison. This makes Shaghaf Oud a blind reach, daily wearer without killing the bank account. Also, it lasts like a beast...really, 8-10 hours is a minimum on me, 12 hours in no problem.

Awesome video as always! I watched this yesterday evening an it gave me a new perspective on wearing fragrances 😊 This morning its 32 degree fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) with light snow outside. I chose to wear 6 sprays of Lacoste L'homme (spring/summer fragrance) This feels perfect in this weather! I will definitely be incorporating more of these rules in my fragrance wearing journey. I think I do respect all of these rules except blind buying sometimes 😆 But if I do so it's second hand or with a really good discount to be sure I won't loose money reselling it if I don't like it. And yes fragrances evolve on the skin especially when they have natural materials like essential oils. These are fragile and evolve with the chemistry of your skin. There are some fragrances that I really appreciate but turns into burnt plastic or kerosene on my skin 🤢

Rule 3, yes! (Rant warning) I find it really really hard to understand fragrance reviews that mentions a scent is for summer, this for winter, this for autumn bla bla bla.. just like genders, a scent is like a flavour, a taste! So you shouldn’t eat some food in certain seasons? That makes no sense at all, I love having ice cream even during winter! And even if there is such a notion that certain scents are appropriate for certain temperatures, this again is dumb because are we not mostly indoors where there’s a heater? and for people living in hotter countries, they all have air conditioners in their homes! The rooms I’m in are mostly temperature controlled so the entire argument falls apart.. i could understand humidity as a concern but everyone should own a dehumidifier and a diffuser by now since they’re not that expensive anymore.. i could also understand situational reasons like going to the beach, to the office, to the park, to the store, to the stadium, but seasons, no.. also you can always regulate how much or how little you spray right? Rule 5, i do agree with you But, the thing is, to ourself, the fragrance we use is like the flavour of food we eat. Its what we like, prefer and enjoy. However, to people around you, the fragrance we use is like the clothes wear. Its an outward representation of ourself to others to smell (fragrance) and see (clothes). And it is in this regard that people may perceive SOME scent can be feminine/masculine (like some clothing may be more gender specific than others). But, this again falls on ourself and whoever thinks they have a superior right to judge others, so, if we dont care, then yolo. Rule 8, strangely enough it also depends on the person’s blood type (A, B, O, etc)

As for the gender thing, I personally like Tom Ford Plum Japonais which is targeted for women and my step mother like Givenchy Gentlemen EDP. However, I do find MFK Oud Satin Mood and Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady a little too feminine for me to wear. Oddly enough, I'm looking for woody floral musks at the moment 😂😂 I like your outfit btw. Looks very nice on you

Fragrances do have gender in my opinion. It could be a culture thing though. For example, I'm from the south of India, and over here women traditionally wear jasmine flower garland on their head (including my sister and my mom). It's a very common thing, not just in the rural areas, even in the cities. So, I have always associated jasmine with femininity. So, if you're brought up in such a culture, you might think that way :)
