"So weit die Füße tragen" is a German film released in 2001, based on the novel of the same name by Josef Martin Bauer. Here is a brief synopsis of the movie:
The story takes place after the end of World War II. The protagonist, Clemens Forell (played by Bernhard Bettermann), is a German prisoner of war held captive by the Soviet Red Army in a labor camp in Siberia. After years of suffering and hardship, he decides to escape from this harsh environment and make his way back to Germany.
Clemens Forell's journey of escape is extremely arduous. He has to traverse the harsh wilderness of Siberia, traveling thousands of kilometers and facing extreme cold, hunger, and brutality. In this challenging process, he encounters various obstacles and challenges, but he never loses hope and relentlessly pursues his freedom.
The film follows Clemens Forell's escape as the main storyline, depicting the different characters and events he encounters along the way. He forms friendships with other escapees and encounters kind-hearted people, but also faces the pursuit and dangers posed by hostile forces. However, Clemens Forell's unwavering determination and longing for his family drive him forward, enabling him to overcome all obstacles and ultimately achieve his goal.

My grandfather was also in Siberia. He was an explosives expert in the regular German army and was captured after he and 3 others blew up a bridge. They imprisoned him and his comrades for 5 days with only water because they wanted to know who had blown up the bridge, nobody told them because they knew they would be killed if they told the Soviets. After 5 days he was sent to Siberia where he was imprisoned for about 2 years. He told us stories about how the guards sat around a campfire with the prisoners because they were afraid of being eaten by the wolves, but also the wolves were afraid of getting too close to the prisoners because they knew that if they got too close they would be caught and eaten by them. One day, a guard's hand froze while riding his motorbike, forcing him to ride in circles until his tank was empty. After a while, he made friends with a guard who eventually took him to Moscow, from where he travelled back to Germany by train. In Russia, it was customary to kiss each other on the cheek when saying goodbye, and when my grandfather said goodbye to the guard, the Guard kissed him on the mouth. My Grandfather thought he was just a good friend, realized years after that, what the Guard was eventually felt for him.

My forebear Jakob Walter was a conscript from Wurtemburg in Napoleon’s 450,000 Grand Armee that invaded Russia … he was one of the lucky 10,000 that made it back and didn’t die like 440,000 unlucky Napoleonic foot soldiers !!! … I wouldn’t be here if he had died under the tyrant Napoleon’s ill planned invasion of Russia !!!

I saw this movie during one of my visits to my daughter in US. I love this movie. With a fanatic determination the German prisoner overcomes all ordeals with the single goal of escape to his Vaterland was pictured beautifully in this movie. I readily remembered the most meaningful quote of world's top most adventurous fighter Oberst Hans Ulrich Rudel of the Third Reich's Luftwaffe - ' Verloren ist nur wer sich selbst aufgibt ' (Gone are those who abandoned themselves).
