Is there any reason why the outside of a helmet is not of a soft foam same as in side? Genuine question from the other side of the world. Like wouldn’t that soften the blows to the helmet/head?

if the whole thing was soft it would not be nearly durable enough to last 10 years. all helmets are made to last 10 years before they are deemed "expired" AKA not safe enough anymore. hope thus helped. God bless

There is a rugby style helmet than can be worn over top of a football helmet, and some people do wear these in practice. You can see them being worn at the end of this video. But l suspect that coaches and players think it's too uncanny for game day use.
