This is the Classic PBS Documentary about the Golden Age of legendary Cleveland area department stores. It includes interviews with local TV personalities as well as eyewitness accounts from people who remember fondly the memories of their childhoods and youth, and the magic of shopping in those wonderful Cleveland area stores. Going downtown to shop was something to look forward to, and something to remember.
Enjoy a trip down Memory Lane with this one-of-a-kind program, gathered from stock footage, with many personal accounts from lifelong Cleveland area residents. If you are among those privileged to share some of those memories from the 1950s and 60s, you will appreciate this even more. Be sure to comment and feel free to share this video compilation with family and friends.

I worked in the auditing office at the May Company in the early 60s. Maybe they treated management like family but not the clerical workers. I remember one time in 62 there was talk about forming a union and we received threatening letters if we decided to vote for this. However, we did get a 20% discount on everything. We had a crabby boss too but this was my first real job and was introduced to real world 101. The sales people were nice and treated well. Many made commissions on things they sold too, and oh yes, there was a dress code.

We left Cleveland in 1961 and moved to New Orleans... names of the stores were different, but the theme was the same. Downtown shopping... everything was on Canal Street. "Make the guests feel welcome" lol... not today

Thank God that the African-Americans moved in and improved everything! Of course, that's the natural way of African-Americans. They find a problem, use their natural hard-workings ways, pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and get to business! That's why all our inner-cities are so great!
