I don't like playing a game with unpainted mini's - So while I do agree with you in general the quick and dirty but effective methods are well used here if a game is coming up and the mini's are not ready.. You really can't tell its a subpar paintjob on most minis once they are on the table (and usually you just need to add another hour or two for the details after the game to finish them off well enough to need that real zoom to spot the flaws).. The only giveaway for my armies is almost all units have a shield/armor part/flag that would usually be be a hand painted pattern - so if i'm in a rush odds are that area is sanded flat but blank or has a waterslide...

For anyone intimidated by camoflage, don't be!! Seriously, after a bit of research as a 1:35 scale armour modeller, most camo schemes, especially in ww2 were field applied, slapped on by the troops on the frontline, it doesn't have to be any different for 40k models, my ad-mech army have a version of the British "cloud" camo scheme from ww2 (called the Mickey mouse pattern by the troops) and it looks awesome! It's simple, field applied so I do to have to be too careful about the pattern itself, and great fun to do, plus it is a surprisingly good fit on my models! Seriously, give it a go, there are loads of cool historical camo schemes out there, so do a Google search, pick one you like, in some camo colours you think look good, or just go with the actual historical colours even, and go for it! Don't worry about being neat because in reality, camo schemes rarely are, and have fun!!

Something I've started doing recently is decorating the bases of models before painting them (except for elements such as static grass). I find this does two things: first it saves frustration of trying to be too careful when decorating a base after a model is painted. Second, it can really speed up batch processing a lot of miniatures by having a cohesive base theme already completed. Blending the paint job into the base can happen in real time as you work, for aspects such as weathering.
