While Brooke nails the cliches, I feel like it is important to point out the AUTHOR’S VOICE. So much of an essay isn’t built within the story itself, but rather by the storyteller. That is where nuance, uniqueness and maturity really shine through.

Hello, my name is Eric and I have been watching your videos since my Freshmen year in high school. I was recently admitted to Stanford University and I wanted to say thank you for all of the information and resources that you have provided me and other viewers throughout the years. Pretty much whenever you write a sentence, ask yourself “why” or “how” and it’ll build to a more unique mold of you So if you write “Being a Mexican American immigrant was challenging for me” ask yourself: how was it challenging, why was it challenging: “Being a Mexican American immigrant was challenging because of the vast socioeconomic, cultural, and political climate of America that posed barriers for me because they are different from Mexico, making finding my way through America filled with many barriers. But In the end it was a learning experience for me because...” It’s kind of easy but requires lots of genuine thought. (I just made this up)

Someone once told me to read the essay again and ask yourself “could this have been written by anyone else?” If the answer is yes it should probably be a little bit more personal which can be achieved by including small stories that happened to you specifically. Don’t just say that you are some type of person, give an example of something that you did that shows it
@mashootatoes

You basically add statements called " insights" where after you describe whatever you're describing, you show what you felt from you're own perspective which in itself is unique you're perspective will always be different from others.

I struggled for a while trying to find something to write about because I had faced virtually no adversity growing up. Right before my applications were due, I realized I was overthinking it. I just got into Boston University with super low stats so my essay definitely helped me. I literally wrote about the dream house I had in 2nd grade. You can write about ANYTHING and make it amazing, just make it about you! Good luck everyone!

Aamir Be aware that if you take a gap year you might lose sight of your educational goals. If you don’t know what to study don’t waste your money (or take loans), research career paths and make a decision. I took a gap year and I’m currently studying chemical engineering. Don’t lose sight of your objectives and if you don’t have one, look for one.

about the immigration topic- I feel like almost everyone who writes about it came to the U.S very young or is an American with immigrant parents.
