Sharpless was just starting out as an assistant prof at MIT when I was there. His labs and Whitesides’ occupied the first floor of the organic chemistry building. He was very approachable and unassuming. Hasn’t changed a bit.

Watching this in 2022 and GOD! Sharpless did win a Noble prize for the second time.

As someone mentioned... pi bond on alkyne should be the one attacking the terminal N. Also, there should be an arrow from the triple N-N bond to N+ to neutralize the charge in this proposed mechanism. The arow from N- should also come from - charge, not N... The easiest way to see this cycloaddition is just as a Diels-Alder reaction because essentially that's what it is.

Hey mate, when describing the reaction mechanism, you have an arrow going from the alkyne carbon to the nitrogen. Should it not be from the alkyne bond itself to the nitrogen because you need to have the arrow coming from an electron source?
