100% People who love BG3 clearly never played DoS2. It's like how people who love D&D 5e haven't played many other TTRPGs. D&D 5e's rules suck in tabletop and they're even worse in a videogame. DoS2 has a better action system, spell system, level and class system, feat/trait system, movement system, damage type system, and so-on. They don't even fulfill the idea of having a decent videogame version of D&D 5e by having a very mediocre character creator which is basically a graphically improved version of DoS2, but with less interesting races. The graphics are pretty shit too for a game with a 100 million dollar budget too.

Larian made my dream back in 2009, after finishing ego draconis i (at the time 7 years old) wanted more, and so had a dream of becoming a game designer, and i followed that path ever since. Im proud of the studio that got me into gaming, and sometimes i get tears of joy when i see the drama on the onternet surrounding BG3 specifically because everyone knows its good and not many, if any studios have the freedom to make such a thing. Aside from that, the reason they went independant is kinda forshadowed in the video "hatching of a dragon" a documentary about ego draconis, where i think it was raze who had made many more features, maps and missions for the game (which i managed to find in the files, but cant implement due to lack of engine for moding), and their publisher had them release the game much earlier, so they had to scrap most of it, which made raze almost cry, and furthermore, a lot of features had to be scrapped to fit the xbox console at the time, which wad just crap compared to pc, so even more had to be scrapped. Its sad, we were supposed to have elves and those lizards from original sin 2 and dragon commander, but it was all scrapped because of the publisher. Im glad they are independant now.

That story checks out, given that they quickly released flames of vengeance which is an alternate version of ego draconis that adds a DLC thats almost an extra game by itself. One thing that I've taken away from this video is that Larian seems to understand what works well in their past games, and carries them forward, while improving or changing other parts. It shows that they're paying attention to the community response to their games. That's surprisingly rare given that the studios behind some larger IPs in the industry don't seem to understand *why* people like their past games, leading them to ditch core defining features and/or carrying forward stuff that people didn't like. I think Bethesda is the best example of this, with Starfield and Fallout 76, it's like the didn't realize they were ripping the core gameplay loop of Fallout/TES out of their most recent games.

Their journey and how they almost went bankrupt making Dos1 is such an inspiring story. --- On the note about DnD dice roll: The thing about dice rolling is that, nothing is ever set in stone. There's no guaranteed success (rolling a 1 is an automatic fail) and there's no guaranteed failure (rolling a 20 automatically succeeds) either. This means that you'll run into some unexpected moments, and just like in real life, sometimes there are certain things that are simply out of your control and you'd be forced to adapt. The dice rolling in DnD simulated that kind of adaptive game plan. Understandably, this is not for everything and some may find it frustrating and resort to save scum, but there are a lot of ways to influence dice roll probability in your favour. it ultimately comes down to the knowledge of the game's system, knowing what bonuses can work in what situation and how to stack the bonuses to increase your chance of success is a huge part of the game. Larian even included the whole inspiration system for rerolling without having to resort to save scum. Compare this to, say Dos2's dialogue check system, there's a lot more uncertainty, and that's what keeps ppl guessing. Whereas in Dos2, if you have a very high persuasion skill for example, then you know you'll succeed in dialogue checks. It becomes predictable, especially on multiple playthroughs and thus, there is no room for tension. But in BG3, you can never be sure, so it makes important moments very tense, and has the potential of seeing alternative outcomes if you got super lucky/unlucky. Ultimately it wouldn't be for everyone but imo, there's a huge benefit to DnD's dice rolling system that I'm glad to see something different after having personally sunk more than 500 hours into Dos2.

"There's no guaranteed success (rolling a 1 is an automatic fail) and there's no guaranteed failure (rolling a 20 automatically succeeds) either." Not on skill checks, though. That is the one change to the D&D rules that I'm not down with. Some checks you simply can't fail in D&D if you are proficient enough, and others you simply can't make.

I just wish that Swen the CEO of Larian and his wife maintain the majority owner of the shares of Larian Studio, For anyone who doesn't know, 70% of the shares are from Swen and his wife, 30% are from Tencent, yup the Tencent who like in previous month acquired the majority shares of Techland, and after that acquisition, Techland introduce a Microtransaction of Dying Light 2.

original sin 2 had a fly ability that did pretty much the same thing as jumping in BG3 they also had some nifty teleport abilities by using the pyramid things so you could explore a lot more fluidly than in bg3.
@joedatius Жыл бұрын
well BG3 actually lets you properly jump which is way more valuable in exploring while also having teleportation. more importantly BG3 is alot better designed exploring areas with lots of differences in elevation, example being baldurs gate itself letting you explore in ways that are impossible in Arx
@roltthehunter Жыл бұрын
@@joedatius I'd hope so right? If the did BG3 and made it worse than an older game that would be sad. I think fly does pretty much everything jump does but better though and honestly I think the combat and spells in Divinity 2 just work better together. You know, the thing about the dice roll, it's really just making the RNG that's in most games visible. Any game that has chance of failure especially for dialogue options technically speaking has that same mechanic just not a visible animated dice roll

Divinity II Ego Draconis is one of the few games I completed twice or more. The tower, the story, the soundtrack, the humor, the dragon form and the feeling of becoming more and more powerful made a great game. I fell in love with Larian Studios when I first tried Divinity Original Sin 2, the game blew me away and gripped me from start to finish. I was already a fan of DnD but it was the fact it was Larien Studios that got me excited for Baldur's Gate 3. They are such a passionate team dedicated to making the best CRPGs they possibly can and I'm so happy they are getting the global recognition and praise that they deserve. Here's to hoping their next game is even more exciting!

Words can't express how happy I am to see Larian getting the attention and respect they deserve. Played Original Sin 2 years back and it quickly became my favorite CRPG of all time. I always thought Larian would just be a niche developer who put out really good under the radar RPGs. Even after finding out they were doing Baldur's Gate 3 I had no clue it would get as big as it did. Now that they're done with D&D and going back to their original IPs I'm hoping we'll get an Original Sin 3 with BG3's budget and quality. Can't wait to see what the future holds for these guys, they may actually be my favorite developers right now (it's a close race with Supergiant)

the really fun thing is, i got recommended Beyond Divinity before any of the other games, and I got SO invested in the premise that I couldn't care a crumb about how bad the gameplay was haha. I found the voice acting very charming and the back and forth banter with the Death Knight funny, it was really dragging me deep in immersion wise, even if it was silly. I think the only reason why I dropped it back in the day was because I have massive ADHD, and saw that Larian released a brand new game in the same universe (that would be Divinity: Original Sin 2) and the moment i booted that one up, i was immediately neck deep in it and I promptly forgot about everything else in my life for several months. I still need to finish Beyond Divinity. maybe once i'm done with BG3, I'll find it in myself to go back a lil. I also need to finish Ego Draconis, that also sits unfinished on my shelf. Great video, thank you for talking about these games! Larian has been very close to my heart for a good few years now, and I am beyond extatic that they're getting the attention they deserve!

Divinity 2 was first Larian game I played. I remember I stubled upon it by complete accident, and I had no idea what to expect. Then for some reason game really sucked me in. As you said, their games have this feel of being made by someone who want fun game, and not just another product. Quirky dialogues and characters, plot twists - it's all in Divinity series.

Sorry for the late reaction, but I fully agree Larian Studio's games are really enjoyable. The only game I could not get "into" was Dragon Commander. I have played Divinity II; Ego Draconis several times before Divinity Original Sin was released, and it was at that time one of my favorite games. I have played all the Divinity games, and completely agree with your analysis. It's even more weird if you consider I am mainly a big JRPG fan. Especially the games from the Nihom Falcom "stable" are amongst my most loved games (Ys series and Trails series). Nevertheless Larian is one of those developers that managed to carve out that special place that made me a true lover of their games.

I remember I just couldn't get into Baldur's Gate. I don't really get on with real time with pause RPG games like that. Then I remember my friend sending me the trailer for BG3 and I saw Larian was making it and I was optimistic because I hadn't long finished Divinity: Original Sin and absolutely loved it. I still haven't finished DOS2 and I have some minor quibbles with it but I do really like it. Likewise I haven't finished BG3 yet but I love that game as well. I just really hope Larian stay in touch with themselves and don't lose their way

Divinity 2 Dragon Knight Saga is one of the best games I laid my hands on. I can't exactly say that the game is easy, cause even on easy difficulty enemies can gang up on you and if you're not careful, well, you're done for, because the way it all plays is that not only you have lock on enemies, enemies also have lock on you and that makes combat a bit trickier than your average hack'n'slash when it comes to melee. I don't see dragon form as gimmick as much as gameplay diversification, the only issue I have with it is that it wasn't very fleshed out. The music of that games is something else entirely. Ambient music and main menu theme is soooo good and masterfully crafted. And humor is one of the best aspects of the game. It's so full of sarcasm and irony it's amazing, and none of it feels forced. Not like nowadays, where the best you can get is mostly either toilet humor and jokes beneath the waist, or outright cringe that's painful to watch. I sure wish Larian would make something like DKS again.

Larian nailed it where most if not all modern RPG's fail ... and that's the companion characters.. It's not just having companion characters alone but fleshing out their backstory's through side quests ..... It really hooks you into a game and the anticipation to see how their story's end makes the drive to the ending that much more satisfying ... and with how other studios are reacting to BG3 shows they are no where close to incorporating this winning formula ... (BG3 does have its flaws ... especially trying to make a homoerotic experience with every character )

I remember Divinity 2 big issue was leveling. Since enemies didn’t respawn you had to search around and kill every single enemy on the map just to level up. If you didn’t you’d be severely outmatched moving on in the game.
