Best thing that ever happened to Mustaine. If he’d stayed in the band it was inevitable that he’d crash eventually. Then we wouldn’t have Megadeth. IMO and it only an opinion Megadeth was heavier and stayed true to its roots longer. Just a more instrumentally technical band. Kirk has nothing on Friedman from a play from the soul aspect. Both iconic bands though to say the least.

@@crimsondeath7468I wouldn't be surprised if he imbibed a bit. For a lot of folks of that generation, it was common. He definitely did use psychedelics a lot, according to Kirk, and in that interview Kirk said he used them too, but never in a professional setting, which kind of suggests Cliff would, haha. He said Cliff would run into him and say, "I'm tripping, don't tell the other guys," so maybe he played shows tripping, and psychedelics definitely give you energy. A lot of folks I know who use psychedelics, including me, also use other stuff; some people call stuff like speed "hard drugs," but it's definitely not like heroin. I can personally take speed or leave it, or cocaine. Alcohol is actually more along the lines of heroin, definitely more physically addictive, and they definitely drank a lot. You can't just drink like they did and not use an upper on the road, no doubt.

@6 String Therapy Ben playing since you were 3 or 4? That’s such a worn out trope that Metallica gave the finger to their fans after ajfa. How about you write and record 4 albums and tour behind them maybe 275 to 300 days a year on the road. Then write another album and see if you flip your core fans off. They went with a new producer who had the balls to call them out on being lazy or formulaic. So what. I for sure love the first four albums way better than all the rest. And I don’t even argue with anyone about who’s better. But dude-get over the black album. It happened and they were introduced to a whole new gang of fans. Anecdotal evidence of how good you play is also kinda lame. Get over yourself. You aren’t edgy for bashing Kirk on a video about Kirk.

Maybe he just finished a gig and was tired as shit and told someone he would do an interview after the gig. Who knows. Cliff seemed like a very cool dude and extremely musically talented. I always wonder how Metallica would of evolved with Cliff. Would we still have the songs that we have now? How would they be different? What songs have we not? James is definitely a driving force of their music so maybe not too much?? Hopefully, I make it to the pearly gates, and I will ask for this knowledge!

Insane that Kirk was only in the band like two weeks and played what he did on Kill Em All. Yeah, those solos were somewhat worked out already by Dave Mustaine, but Kirk improved them and cleaned them up, made sure every note was defined and worked, musically, whereas Dave would sort of noodle randomly in some spots, like he did for that one onstage reuniun. Kirk was sort if encumbered by the timeframe and having to work with Dave's framework, but he still managed to shine; those solos sound like him.

Metallica got real lucky with Kirk. Mustaine left some huge shoes to fill, and I still to this day regard him as the overall better musician. Thats no disrespect to Kirk, I love his solos on AJFA and the Black Album, and he deserves a lot of credit for not being just another Mustaine/Gary Holt copycat in a scene that was full them. However, he walked into a really challenging situation here, and the fact that his leads fit the band so well is amazing. There are plenty of bands that have a quick personnel change that doesn't work and they go the rest of their career with a revolving door of replacements (ironically Megadeth is a huge example of this with the way that Jeff Young replaced Jay Reynolds who replaced Chris Poland, only for Jeff Young to be replaced by Marty Friedman a couple years later). So cheers to Kirk, and RIP Cliff.

He sounded a bit sceptical of Kirk. I guess i havn't heard any stories of him and Dave having problems only Dave, James and Lars. Maybe he liked Dave and thought it would be very difficult replacing him. I think they made a pretty good choice tho

yeah he sounds dissapointed they had to let him go. which is probably because Mustaine was much more of a character than Hammett
@EmilForsberg_GRYBO

@@Bananenbennie well a louder character maybe, but i would definitely say Hammet has character. He's known as this quiet "nerdy" guitarist who can shred ass when needed and fail easy riffs when getting filmed. But yeah, perhaps people see Mustaine as a more "out there" kinda guy. Everyone knows what he's thinking cause he allways speeks his mind.

@@Bananenbennie Dave's ego was too big. Metallica was James and Lars's baby, and Dave was hogging the spotlight on stage. On top of that, Dave couldn't chill, he was a mean drunk, there were fisticuffs with James. Just look at how long he carried that chip on his shoulder for - that's not a sign of an emotionally well-adjusted dude. There's no denying he was a great thrash metal songwriter, and it's perhaps a shame that Metallica lost a bit of bite in dropping him. On the other hand, if he hadn't been kicked out, it's highly doubtful the band would've survived to this day.

Except for the creaks and bumps in the background, like someone shifting their weight in a pleather chair; those sound faster (and thus unnatural) at 1.25x speed. People also DID actually speak much slower in the '80s compared to what sounds normal to our ears today, though Cliff is still extra slow compared even to what was normal then.
