The sheer symmetry of all the angles. I have a passion to do this. There are many cheap facetron style machines for sale. As an offset I could use the rotation of various grades of discs to sharpen graveurs as I do surface engraving. I also have the ability to fix engraving slips or boo boo's, through my use of a Laser Welding machine. Its also my business to repair molding tooling. I'm a Toolmaker with a passion for craft, art and especially bringing to life the inner beauty of rough stones. I've had to wait to do this...but will happen because of your inspiring and educational video's. Yes, I'm longwinded...but always an admirer of other's who dazzle me with their obvious talents and those willing to share. Thank you again.

Watching you cut that garnet blew my mind. I have a couple of antique diamond rings and the jewels are miniscule! The effort that had to go into those chips to make them able to be set in a ring defies imagination. The time to cut ONE almost makes me wonder how it is even worth the cutters effort. 6 rubies and 1 diamond and the ring was valued at $120

your jeweler that was evaluating the stone and setting looked at what he would pay ....not what it would sell for....and had to assume the gems were synthetic so basically gave a value for the gold

As a young parents (Age 21) my Sons father pawned my beautiful Ruby ring & all these years Ive missed my Beautiful square style Ruby stone ring with two lil diamonds on each side of it. I always wondered who bought it or has it, it was very Special to me my dads Aunt gave it to me for my 15th Birthday. But, we needed Diapers & Baby formula, Gas money. Maybe oneday I will be blessed to see it again & own it forever once again! Missing my Ruby baby... 💎😢😭 Sorry but watching this brought up memories... P.S. Enjoyed your video & talent💓

I always wanted to be a gemologist but having very young children at that time, just wouldn't allow me to leave for the course. First one cutting for 40 years and is a well of knowleadge. Second one cutting for 20 years but I think his parents or grandparents were cutting because I gave him some african (tanzanian) rubies from my bussines partner which has a mine and his work was so much better than the old profesor. As always I realy like your videos and keep it up good work. And sorry for my english :-)

Hello Cliff, Thank you for your videos on cutting gemstones. I am a professional artist, and I'm currently working on a museum quality reproduction of the Circa 625 Anglo-Saxon Helmet from the Sutton Hoo ship burial. This helmet has around 30 x 3mm square, flat faced, garnet stones decoration under the eyebrows. I've had problems obtaining flat-faced garnets, as the suppliers only stock faceted gems. Therefore, I'm going to have to remove the facets to created the requisite flat square inset stones. Can you please advise me whether I'm likely to encounter any problems if I simply flatten (grind off) the facets by rubbing the garnets on lubricated wet or dry carborundum paper? Also, the best way to polish them and what cutting lubricant to use? Many thanks for any assistance. Thank you, Rick

My partner and I have quite a collection of different coloured rough/raw sapphires, zircon, garnets, spinnel, black tourmaline, crystal terminations, jellybean crystals, that we have fossicked the past 3yrs all over tge QLD gemfields, Inverell, Glenn Innes, Nanango... To get an honest price on getting them cut is very confusing. May I ask what weight the red garnet began as rough and what the weight was after final cut and polish please? I understand you lise a fifth after cutting, is that correct? I have some great cutters we would lo e to get cut, Im even happy to part with some to cover cost of cutting if that were an option. Thanks for your great knowledhe and patient teachings in your videos. You are very knowledgeable on gemstones and cutting, it helps alot.

Dear Cliff hi, thanks very much for your great art work, it is always appreciated mate. I have 4 questions regarding the acrylic glass you use for polishing if you would answer please. Is it a particular type and quality you use for polishing, or a good quality plexiglass would do the trick? Also, the approximate price for an 8 inch round plexiglass with 1/2 inch hole on it in Australia please?? And, as you have mentioned before, one side should be used for 50k and the other side for 100k cerium oxide, how long each side should be used for polishing until it is no longer good for the job, the trick to understand it please ? And finally, Some of the cutters use Acetone to clean it, is it OK? Thanks for your time mate.

a round brilliant garnet cut like that ...not counting time for adhesive on the dops to set is about 3-4 hours,,,,other more complex cuts where your machine neds to be adjusted for the new setting for three or five times as many different setting can easily double or triple that depending on how complex the cut

Is there a way to tell if your mast is alligned to the grinding disk? How do you know if it's in the right position for faceting? Do you have to start at a certain point and then put in your angles?,

yes....when you travel around to the opposite side you will find out how aligned they are
@buggsy5

The mast needs to be perpendicular to the disk surface - in both axes. Once aligned, the mast position does not matter - the angles remain the same even if you move the mast a bit.
