we have known since the 70's this was happening. I recall in the 90's talk like we must roll back carbon emissions... 30 years later and we still have not done anything meaningful ... not bottom up and not top down... nothing meaningful as it has worsened every year.

We need to all scream from the rafters because it's possibly too late already to save humanity because Capitalism isn't giving up. It's not time to talk gently. Even if we do a WW2 mobilization, it may not be enough. We waited too long. Very few people are being honest to the detriment of us all.

Yes, we are all doomed. Runaway global warming is well underway and it will be abrupt, extreme, catastrophic, irreversible and unsurvivable. Habitat for humans will disappear by 2030, because plants and animals will not be able to adapt to rapid global temperature rise which is locked in because of the drastic changes human pollution has made to atmospheric chemistry. With dead oceans and all the land plants and animals dead, humans will go extinct. We broke it, we cant fix it, and we are doomed because of it. Human extinction seems to be the only way to stop the runaway, omnicidal, toxic heat engine that is Capitalistic, oligarchic, kleptocratic, and utterly corrupt industrial civilization.

I tend to agree with David Wallace that an uninhabital Earth is possible. Firstly, climate models do not take into considerations the positive feedback loop from other factors such as thawing of permafrost. But other feedback loop such as lost of more glaciers, forest and wetlands, increased moisture in the atmosphere, release of more greenhouse gases from both the sea and land are already occuring. At this point, it is already a challenge to expand the amount of greenspace as forest are now more prune to catching fire. 2nd reason. Capitalism continues to be the main driver that requires countries to prioritise economic progress over concern for climate change. To date the rate at which CO2 is being released continue to increase. Deteriorating environmental condition will only put further pressure to rely on fossil fuel to deal with such condition. E.g. heatwave results in increased power demand mainly from air-conditioning. Thirdly, there are many hidden extreme dangers that can happen even before sea level rises to dangerous level. For instance, extreme flooding that not only last longer but also affects larger area and with increase frequency. There is also possibility that large chunk of Arctic ice sheet collapsing that can cause sudden surge in sea level. Political climate is also likely to deteriorate further making it even more difficult for collective global action. There is also a possibility that some desperate country might decide to use geoengineering to try to save themselves. So war resulting from geoengineering is plausible as well. So I think current climate change projection is excessively conservative. It is sad but we are still in a mindset of denying all this perilous danger.

You can believe that we are past the tipping point and that the interaction of scores of positive feedback loops will doom us within a decade or two. You can believe that we can make it as a species to 2050, or even as far away as 2100. Bottom line: We continue to do nothing to combat, slow or effectively deal with the problem, so the end result is, "who cares how long?" It's going to be over sooner rather than later for life on this planet, so let's just make our peace with that and prepare for the end of life here. All these guys do is argue about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin when the angels have already left the building. They provide false hope and delay reality. Better that we make our peace with the simple, undeniable fact that, even if we live out our lives, our children won't. And it won't happen in a day or a year or a decade; the collapse of society and the insanity that will inevitably follow will take years to play out. I actually consider it a blessing of sorts that I am old enough to take comfort from the realization that I will not be around long enough to shoot the hordes breaking down my door to eat me until my ammunition runs out; but, sadly, my grandchildren certainly will not have that comfort extended to them.

What makes you say that we are doing nothing? The ground transport is transitioning from internal combustion to electric. Renewable energy sources (primarily wind and solar) are growing by leaps and bounds, and coal is on the way out. We have reduced consumption for lighting, A/C, household appliances and water use dramatically in the past 30 years. You just don't know what is going on.
@semigeniusreally8988
@semigeniusreally8988 6 жыл бұрын
If you care to believe that what you reference might actually make a difference, well, just keep thinking that so you can sleep well at night. The truth is that (1) the major polluters and the major pollutants continue virtually undeterred and unrestrained; and (2) it's simply too late to do anything to stave off - let alone simply postpone - the inevitable Sixth Mass Extinction. With more than 70 self-reinforcing feedback loops at work - and now interacting with each other - and with the continued burning of fossil fuels in greater measures each year, and with the discovery of the "global dimming effect" if we were to stop burning ALL fossil fuels TOMORROW, the handwriting has been on the wall for a century and the handwringing has begun. Now, you might want to think that a few more "transitioning" steps and some major discovery will avoid the inevitable catastrophe, and if so, then I admire your naivete and hope (self-delusion being itself a self-reinforcing feedback loop); If you are Christian, you'd be better off hoping for Jesus's return to save our souls that relying on technology and cooperation we just don't have the ability to create. I, for one, am going to simply spend my remaining time here enjoying the time I have left with the people and activities I love. After all, "mass" extinction is ultimately just a shibboleth; we all die sometime. Any one of us could have a stroke, get hit by a bus or choke on a chicken bone tomorrow and that might be our own personal extinction, but some of us will have the questionable pleasure of hanging around long enough to die en masse. Death is death, baby: Don't take living just a few years longer all that serious.

Because of that we will lower CO2 emiissions and we will save lots of money by doing that. That also means less smog which is really serious problem here in winter in some cities.

Andrew Friedman, my humble observation is that the time for sensitized small-talk and half measures are over. We are already on the downturn of the rollercoaster, albeit it still relatively slowly but even you agree that the pace is picking up. I need to remind you of a simple law of 3's - 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food. The increasing spate of drastic climate events and its impact on all living beings from bleached coral, to forced migration to sea water contaminating drinking water, are vindicating people like James Lovelock, Guy McPherson and opther prominent scientists who contributed via data to this piece. I am not interested in who is right or wrong or who is scaring who - soon you will have to face a machete-wielding zombie who is hunger and desperate and have nothing to lose and intent on taking what you have and raping your wife or girlfriend and / or daughter (like we are experiencing NOW in South Africa). The only questions you have to ask yourself is how overweight are you, how fit are you, what skills and resources you have and how prepared are you because they are coming for you in America too like they do in Europe, as we speak.

Not if you read REAL peer review magazines. In real peer review, you have people of the same science review your paper before its published. In AGW magazine, you have just any one review it. All they have to do is claim to be a climate science and they can review anything that is climate related. For instance, in agw magazines, they act as if the artic melt off began in 1970 and show how it is worse since then and no one says a thing. In glaciology magazines they use real data to show that we are in about the same place as it was in 1950. This data is reviewed by real glaciologist and it is accepted. Another example, a few years ago they had a new satellite that made maps of the Antarctic ice and they claimed in agw magazines that it proved that the ice was melting. It only took one person trained in reading maps to point out the map did not match what the author was claiming to have it take down. You still have alarmist repeating that claim but they have no data to back it up since the internet site that had it retracted all data on it.

Wallace-Wells' work in this piece has been dismissed by Michael Mann, who at the same time compliments his other work. It's alarmist and hyperbolic, which given the denial movements power and wealth (if not great in number of adherents) at best doesn't help, or more dangerously could "feed the beast". Believe me, we don't want that. As Mann puts it, things are bad enough as they are.

People talk about climate change being a threat to the world. No. People are that can either make the world a better or worse place. When wars are happening for resources I do not think the people affected are worried about climate change. How is the world helping the Amazon rain forest and indigenous tribes that inhabit them.. These people will eventually be made to conform one way or another. Norway is happy to make millions from its oil revenue with most of its own electric etc being green. Yet Norway is a big polluter but not in its own country. Electric cars are not green. Where is the lithium mining going on. It is not environmental. People make the earth uninhabitable by the actions of greed. Wars displaced the people. The data is not adding up about climate change. Scientists who support climate change do not have the data to back up human intervention. Al Gore has made millions of dollars for himself and buddies who make money from something that has not been proven by human interaction.
