Great to see this topic brought up. I see so little about it. The ozone problem was huge in NZ where I live, and this is one of our greatest climate victories. It shows we can do it!
@jerryreichelderfer7472 жыл бұрын
One of my biggest gripes about when people talk about climate change is the lack of any real and practical solutions. If you want people to use a product that is half as effective and cost twice as mush most people are not going to buy in. To save the planet and life as we know it it needs to far less about profit and more about providing answers that people will actually use. And yes, that means making it cheaper. Susan and Stephen and other like them are making strides to achieve this and have done so in order to close the ozone. This gives me hope. :)

If we could get these two brilliant minds together to tackle fiberglass product production, the amount of polluting waste could be reduced IMMENSELY. Let me tell you, if you want to locate pollution, check the waste output of literally ANY fiberglass product manufacturer. Even the locations which are regularly inspected by the EPA, are allowed to use and dispose of some very nasty chemicals which are completely destructive to all 5 forms of life on our planet along with the atmosphere. And the trimmings those places discard do NOT biodegrade. Waste created decades ago remain in the same condition as the day they were discarded. There is a reason for fiberglass pump bases which get buried underground. They last a LONG LONG TIME and do not have to be replaced or maintained. If they do not decompose in use, they will not decompose in a landfill; where almost ALL fiberglass waste ends up. The ONLY "safe" aspect of fiberglass/styrene based products... the glass itself which will return to its natural "sand" state eventually. But when encased in plastics, that process is outright prevented, or slowed down immensely at minimum.

Looking around today, big issues that have been brought to light in the recent past (Climate Change, Plastic proliferation). the problem isn't that people don't understand it, or that they don't want change, its that there isn't a simple solution that doesn't disrupt people's lives. Its not as simple as switching to a roll-on or a hand pump hairspray. What is the easy change that reduces greenhouse gasses? What is the simple change that replaces all the plastic? Plastic seems to be the simpler of the two, but Marketers insist on packaging that is colorful and shiny..... aka plasticy. Store insist on packaging that protects and prevents theft. Cardboard should be a simple solution.... going back to glass should be a simple solution.... but it doesn't seem to be gaining much steam though.

If only there was a carbon capture technology based on nano technology that self replicates and is already embedded into ecosystems so it can be implemented safely. Such technology would be nice to have, especially if it uses solar energy and has numerous side benefits like provide shade and maybe even building materials too, and edibles, for free..
@Homer1e23 жыл бұрын
Too late for that.
@sorsocksfake3 жыл бұрын
Partially works, but there is a fatal catch. Whenever these machines (Technological Revolutionary Enhanced Environment Regenerators) break down in one way or another, their work tends to be undone. Most notably in your given example of edibles: a leaf is grown by extracting carbon from the atmosphere and water from the ground. You then eat that leaf in your salad. Your body burns that leaf, and you exhale the carbon as CO2 and the water as vapor. At that point we're back to square 1. The same happens if the tree/grass/chaff/etc get burned, or rot away. Unless the TREES either vanish or get buried so well that it can't decay or the decay products get trapped, it just returns to the atmosphere. So it helps in one way: any carbon currently trapped inside a plant (or dead plant body) is not in the atmosphere. But everything dies... and arguably "dust to dust" is better expressed as "water vapor and co2 to water vapor and co2". It's not a long-term solution. There is one exception, as said: if the decay products get trapped long-term. This is how fossil fuels formed in the first place. I haven't heard of ideas to do this intentionally on the scale required, but one idea that should work is iron seeding (iron fertilization). We use iron to fertilize the oceans, and many of the plants grown that way should sink deep enough to be out of the system for hundreds of years (i.e. long enough to think of a permanent solution). A good backup plan perhaps, though idk if it can be implemented at scale. And of course, intervening in nature on that scale tends to have unforeseen consequences, so we shouldn't be too eager.
@swedmiroswedmiro13523 жыл бұрын
@@sorsocksfake This is a VERY good answer. I'd like to add that other ways of pulling carbon out of the air takes a lot of energy so doing it on a scale big enough will use an enormous amount of energy and then we are back to the energy problem. Using less CO2 in our consultation patterns and creating CO2 neutral energy is the key.

The political climate, especially in the United States, was totally different back then. Ronald Reagan and Canadian Prime Minister Mulroney were the ones who enabled North America and by extension Europe and then the rest of the world to follow through on protocols to prevent the worsening of the ozone layer. If the Republicans of today were in power back then, I'm fairly confident saying that the issue would have been made political and made to stall. The irony however is that the Republican party today is a direct result of changes that Ronald Reagan made himself when he was president. The United States of today is the vision on Ronald Reagan, decimating education systems, removing trust and faith in public institutions etc etc.

Dr. Tyson First, may I suggest that you put up a page for asking random questions. If there already is one, then it needs to be made more visible. I tried to find one but couldn't, and a comments section makes a poor substitute. To my question: Do you agree that the use of any non-solar nuclear power adds to the Earth's heat load, and should be avoided wherever possible? I'm talking about both fission and fusion. I was formerly a big advocate of fission, as the safest way known to generate electricity, but all energy, as you know, eventually degrades into heat, and the Earth has too much of that already. I now advocate for using forms of power which derive solely from the sun, i.e., solar PV, solar thermal, wind, and hydro. Geothermal and tidal also seem to me like good options. Other energy sources - fossil fuels and nuclear - are not viable in the long term on a warming planet. Can I get an amen?

Mending the o3 layer was agreement to stop pulling the threads of a tapestry but co2 emission reduction.... The scale, the magnitude of the carbon emissions in comparison is not cause for optimism. Just because we could stop the o3 does not mean for a second we can do the same to co2 emissions w/in time. Sometimes "hope is a mistake".
@thejestor93783 жыл бұрын
Main problem is co2 is also major byproduct of livestock and just human existence, we create it just by breathing. We can lessen the output, but we can’t fully reverse or stop it.

@Jay Tee Okay, I'm not talking about when the planet is most liable to die out due to expansion of the sun as it goes along the course of it's life, I am referring to within a reasonable timespan, and we have learned from Easter Island more than you think, not every nation or people has, but some have, here in the US, logging companies are required to plant new trees to grow in regions they have logged, and are even limited in regions to log at and amount. And there about 9,000 people in the modern day who live upon Easter Island and Chile mainland who claim to be of Rapa Nui descent and are recognized as native Rapa Nui. While the island lost it's resources, the people did not fully die out, and unlike with Easter island, it is quite difficult for the entire planet to lose it's resources due to sheer size, combined with increasing efforts in first and second world countries to conserve nature as well. There are even efforts going on in africa to stop desertification and the spread of the Sahara desert further into the sub-saharan regions, these efforts have shown some success and the projects are still on going there. Maybe do some research on conservation and environmental projects before having such a bleak outlook on the outcome of the world.

I’m in no way a “Climate Denier”. I believe we should always do the best we can to reduce pollution, and excess emissions. BUT, I feel mankind’s, (can I even use that word?), are minuscule compared the the Earth itself! The Earth has went from heavily Greenhouse periods to Ice ages before humans even existed!! Things like the Paris Climate Accords are just money grabbing/wealth redistribution scams! We DO need to find new energy sources, and gradually get away from fossil fuels, (but not try to eliminate it completely, until we find better methods)! Solar and wind power alone is not suitable for even reliable back-up power needs!!! P.S. I’m NOT GOING TO GIVE UP MY AIR CONDITIONING OR FOOD REFRIGERATION!!!

I agree with Susan’s view of progressing human kind, I would like to see this expatiated. However what I hear is a centric case around human kind, that is we caused the problem industrialisation and we should then be solely responsible to fix it through creating new systems of industrialisation. What I don’t hear is repairing and promoting natural systems that can work in partnership with human advancement that leads to a sustainable outcome. You know we will one day, may as well start now.

@@BossMan-yu1og That's not necessarily correct. You have to factor in the budget of the Intelligence Community since the majority of those institutions are also military, and you also have to factor in "discretionary spending". So the US military budget is much higher than it seems.

@@whatabouttheearth You are right. My response was the result of a quick Google search in an attempt to highlight myself as a smartass. The overly complicated nature of economics in the U.S. military is far too much for my tiny peanut brain to comprehend. All I can say is that the numbers are far higher than what is seemingly reasonable considering the myriads of other quality of life projects that money should be used for.

While 410A does have a ODP of 0 it actually has a higher GWP of R22. R22 has a GWP of around 1800 compared to carbon witch is the baseline of 1. many of the R22 replacements are considerably higher than r22. 410A is around 2000GWP and the most common commercial R22 replacement 404a is around 3900 GWP. as i work in the heating and cooling trade i try my best to limit refrigerant leaks but poor quality copper in coils and flare connections on mini split systems have really increased the amount of lost refrigerant. there are better refrigerants while marginally more hazardous but are not used due to cost and outdated safety regulations. we really need to realize that climate change is far more important than any of the issues that we pay attention to. If we spen as much time ,effort and money on climate change as we have on covid 19 we would be far better off

When the push for eliminating chlorofluorocarbons was happening, I was a kid. The way it was presented made me understand 2 things: this is a real problem and we, as humans can do something to solve it. As an adult, I remember when I heard the ozone latter was healed. What a triumph! What happened to us that now we need to come together again - to solve the problem of climate change? We’re so cynical now.

Close to no return, yeh Airforce! I can only speak about my last job, working in the Royal Airforce as an aircraft technician, just the amount of fuel such an organisation uses is mind blowing and CFC gas used in aircraft, for cooling the electronics and radar equipment, in which those systems frustratingly did leak, due to poor design. I now work in solar because the change needs to happen!
