When lead climbing, since having learnt about it, I've found uses for it all the time, and is now one of my most preferred moves (7a/b).it allow you extra reach, and to do moves that would otherwise require a lot of strength

Do you use it more frequently on a specific type of terrain, ex. overhangs?

Hands down my favourite move. When I get a cheeky inside flag in I feel so good about my technique. Took a broken ankle for me to realise how to use them and haven't looked back!

I have found it occasionally useful for steep overhangs more often than an outside flag if there is only one foot hold available for me to transition to the next far away handhold and one foot needs to come off anyway. This negates the all too common foot swinging down like a tail or a chain that lowers my hips. Maybe this is because I picked the wrong foot for that hold to begin with but I agree that sometimes when needing to move side to side it can help.

I get to use this move more often when I'm rope climbing (TR/lead); when conserving energy is very important. Bouldering, not so much.

This is a great technique and I used it from the very start of my climbing , so it comes quite natural and provides efficiency and flow especially, foot sequences to avoid foot swapping, steep overhangs, getting into balanced clipping positions on lead, very common for finishing last move and the starting move.. It just provides so many options

Ever since learning about the inside flag, I've been finding uses for it and the stability it adds when used correctly. Great tool to have in the box.

awesome video especially with the inside flag comparisons to the back step/outside flag combo. while rare, there are two cases where i am more likely to use an inside flag over an outside flag/back step: 1.) the foothold is much lower and more directly underneath the handhold so i cannot shift my center of gravity as far with an outside flag versus an inside flag. imagine wrapping your other leg behind you with an outside flag when your body is in full extension. your leg will not have nearly the same reach going behind you as it would going in front of you with an inside flag which makes a difference when shifting your center of gravity in line with your base of support. good opportunities to use an outside flag tend to be with same-side hands/feet with a foothold positioned further horizontally and closer vertically from the handhold. 2.) your last move puts you in a same hand/foot combo, and a foot swap to a back step with opposite hands/feet off of a bad foothold increases your chance of falling or peeling off. another neat benefit of an inside flag is that you should have similar reach potential as a backstep since you are getting one hip into the wall and using the hand on the same side for the next hand move. also, i see your point about saving two foot movements with a foot swap. you could argue that you still had to do two movements with the inside flag as it's still a movement even if you didn’t place your feet. great video!

i tend to be able to get my hips closer to the wall with an inside flag (vs outside flag) especially on overhanging terrain, this is due to the twisting involved putting more load on the bigger bicep muscles.... also you can more effectively use the flagging foot to put pressure on the wall which helps prevent barn door even further

from my personal experience, i use this move to help with my core ( i have weaker core) and to help control moves where there is more bar door motion. like brooke final move, the hand faces away, higher chance of barn door

I think the same foot same hand moves are useful for saving a foot switch as was said in the video. This could be crucial when the feet are bad esp. on rock. Then it comes down to inside flag vs back flag. I think back flag for more overhanging where you can hang off the hold and swing the free leg behind you and inside flag for more vertical/locked off/close to the wall positions.

When the foot is too bad for a footswap wouldn't it then be inside flag Vs backflag? An outside flag requires a footswap.

Nice. Will defo try this out. Not sure I fully understood where you would use instead of a back flag. On two boulders you showed it looked like you could also have back flagged for the same result - although I am guessing due to the difference in hip position the back flag maybe wouldn’t work as well? Will have to give it a try :)

I found the inside flag is more useful paired up with some kind of side pull. Especially with your body turned to one side. It's a very situational move, but when you need it, it fits into the flow really well.

Could you explain why an inside-flag is preferable to a back-flag for the move on the yellow v6 at 1:52? In my experience the back-flag usually feels more natural for overhanging, scrunched-up situations, while the inside-flag feels better (on the rare occasions I try it) for less steep, more stood-up positions.

So he doesn’t have to do the foot swap
@waynelin6238
@waynelin6238 3 жыл бұрын
@@Eliv537 I mean the backflag (not the backstep), where the same-side foot (as the hand) steps but the other leg goes behind it. So it's the same the foot stepping as in the inside-flag, except that the flagging leg goes behind the stepping leg instead of between it and the wall, and requires no foot swap.

I guess the back-flag v.s. inside-flag problem has something to do with the direction and type of the handhold and foothold. They use different parts of the toe to step on holds thus requiring different directions (and amounts) of force generated by the handhold to keep balance.

It seems like the inside flag essentially turns your hips around so that your left leg essentially turns into a right leg and vice versa - converting same side hand and foot into functioning a little like opposite side hand and foot.

Inside flag still doesn't come natural to me after trying to practice a few times. I feel I need to lock off more and can't keep straight arms on an inside flag. However recently there's finally been one time where I found it useful, it gave me a longer reach over backflag and the outside flag wasn't an option due to direction of the holds. So I guess keep trying! 😉

So it seems like doing this move feels similar to if you were re trying to throw a ball with your non-dominate hand. Weird at first not always useful but it could be helpful to know how to do.

This keeps happening, haha; you'll release a great video that's exactly what I'm trying to work on at the moment. Anyways, this was super useful, so thank you!
