Oh my, I just went on a trip with my husband and stopped at Cologne just because it was my dream to visit Cologne's Cathedral since I am in love with gothic architecture and it changed my life. I had a panic attack climbing those stairs, I threw a fit like a baby because the wind was blowing and the whole tower was rocking, I felt claustrophobia because the space was so tiny but couldn't look out the windows because it would give me vertigo, and then when you think the nightmare is over you have the last set of metal stairs and I felt like quitting but I did it! My husband pushed me to go and reminded me that we had traveled this far and went all the way to Cologne just to live that experience. We visited many places and saw many beautiful things but this was a whole epiphany. I recommend to anyone that thinks about climbing, to eat about 1hr or 2hrs before, don't smoke that day, have a good night's sleep prior to the day, and also go hydrated!

Thank you so very much for this video. I was to fearful to climb the last part (exposed metal staircase) to see the bells. My friend climbed and took the picture for me. Still makes me nervous watching it...at that was in 1984!

We did that climb one summer in the late 70s or early 80s. It's just over 500 steps, then those metal ones at the top add a few more to that number. There are not many things I've climbed up that have as many steps as that, though a couple of others I've also done with a lot of steps to climb are the giant Buddha atop Lantau Island in Hong Kong and the William Wallace monument in Scotland.
