This is a famous ride, I thought I was looking at snow... the mountain is made of limestone and is in southeastern France. Outstanding video, thanks for posting it in English!

I love how so many "serious" road cyclists complain about this guy climbing the Ventoux on an e-bike, fucking grow up, there is absolutely 100% nothing wrong with that, I'd do it too for the fun of it, stop pretending you're in a tour de france and just enjoy cycling.

***** bang on mate, the amount of sneers i get from Lycra clad tour fans as i shoot past them is unbelievable, im out having fun, they are out showing off, they even try to race me in Edinburgh, the poor sods, I just smile and hit the throttle, no way they can match 1000 watts for long, and it annoys the hell outta them.

MisterMacrae Still, being a lycra guy is way more enjoyable. You feel that u did it not a stupid engine ^^ I tried e-bikes and they just dont give u the same feeling of accomplishment :) But with saying they are out just to show off is stupid and far off the truth.

+MisterMacrae I want to get a more powerful ebike than my 250 watt bike but don't know wht to do to make it road legal. How did you go about registering your bike for road use etc? Does it have to have indicators and wing mirrors?
@thelastdruidofscotland
@thelastdruidofscotland 9 жыл бұрын
matt23540 in europe the rules change April 2016, 200 watts, 15.5mph, however, for the moment, if i have a limiter fitted, then anything is road legal, i usually stick around 20-30mph, and not been stopped once, also grandfather rights apply to any bike built prior to the new rules being introduced, that means they remain road legal, get a 1000-5000 watt hub, you wont regret it.

and btw, his system in the vid is really low power, high power ebikes are a whole different kettle of fish, you need dual suspension, a nice steel frame, and decent travel, because hitting even a small pothole at 30-60mph would wreck most road bikes, keep it simple, and strong mate

The interesting thing you can see here is that the output power somewhat doubles on the e-bike. let's say 250W for the rider and 250W for the e-bike. But the overall advantage in time is less because your bike is 20kg heavier. In the end you will get not 50% faster, but just about 25%. (when the wind is the same in both tests) . It the end, I think the e-bike will not really benefit the sporty people who want to set a time on a certain mountain. It doesn't make sense. . But for trekking people. this is really good. They can pass any mountain with full gear (tent, gas-burner etc.) without dying on the mountain. A lot of people enyoing lovely France on a bike instead of burning diesel on the mountain, I think that's a good thing.
@simonrano8072
@simonrano8072 3 жыл бұрын
First your are not using % properly. Doubling the power is a 100 % increase. You indeed don't double the power to weight ratio in your example put you are missing a point : The motor + battery as a power to weight/ratio far superior as a humain. A kilos of battery and motorisation is around 25 W/Kg for 1h. A pro racer is 6 W/Kg for an hour. So with a E-bike and a high capacity battery, let say 250 W and 20 Kg, here is the impact : A 250 W 85 Kg rider + bike takes 1h40 up Mt Ventoux (12 Kmh) With a 300 Wh battery and 250 W motor it is now : A 500 W 105 Kg rider + bike takes 1h05 (19 kmh) So roughly a 100 % power increase with a 20 % weight penalty that gives a 60 % increase of speed. 250 W for an hour is pretty good for a random cyclist, with the motor you enter pro level climbing speed. So even a small engine will benefit a lot for a racer.

Brilliant! E-bikes are a lot of fun, and enable you to go further and faster than on a conventional bike. Perhaps not as much energy used, but it's better than not doing it at all!

Fast forward to 2016...ebike kits are up around 5000w now. In the U. S. you can get these bikes to reach over 75km/hr. on a 72v kit. I own a Mongoose Dolomite on a 1500w kit and if I could get myself and my bike to Mont Ventoux.... rest assured I would make this same Trek. I know you had LOADS of fun making this video. Cool video. Not a huge fan of eBikes, but if it causes more people to get on bikes, I embrace them! People shouldn't always be in such a hurry, but it's easier to give them a tool that will embrace their busy lifestyle rather than ask them to change by slowing things down.

I recently purchased an ebike and use it to commute to and from work. My fitness is such that I wouldn't be able to make the commute on a normal bike, so for me it is a case of ride an ebike or not ride at all. The cost savings are great too, $6/day in car vs 10c/day in power costs. I also rent out my company park card which is paying for my ebike. As my fitness improves my end goal is to be able to commute using a normal bike, but for now the ebike rocks!

I done my own tests uphill using a normal road bike, followed by an ebike to measure which one gave me the best work out 🏋 the ebike won hands down as I was moving at a constant pace, breathing as one should when working out ( gasping and straining oneself is not good for overall fitness and using the normal road bike I did gasp and strain and didn't feel like I was getting a good constant workout, my hearth rate was up and down and at times I found my self straining my back in order to maintain enough speed to keep the bike moving. Since using the ebike I have experienced zero back pains and have never felt washed out or exhausted, any decent fitness trainer will tell you that a good balanced work out without straining oneself is the best way to become truly fit

This is cheating! You aren't supposed to use a motor to go up a mountain! Use a normal bike! You aren't supposed to use wheels and gears to go up a mountain! Use only your own legs! You aren't supposed to use shoes to go up a mountain! Run barefoot! You aren't supposed to use your legs to go up a mountain! Walk on your hands! You aren't supposed to use your hands to go up a mountain! Crawl, pulling yourself with your teeth or your eyelashes! You aren't supposed to use body parts to go up a mountain! Use only thought power! You aren't supposed to use thoughts to go up a mountain! Use a wormhole to tunnel the space-time continuum that you conjure in an alternate universe! Or you can do whatever you want, stop worrying and enjoy it all the way!

I wonder how much better battery technology has come today compared to a couple of years ago, and how good they'll be in another two or three years. Maybe you soon only need one battery for a trip this long or longer. As an overweight person, I'd love to have a powerful ebike with a battery that can last for a whole day such as a twelve hour trip, without being to big and heavy for convenience. I live in Western Norway and there's a lot of steep grades that would be impossible for a big guy like me to climb on a regular bike. This helps a lot of us to get out and about! Cheers.

It's a beautiful hill so why not enjoy it without sweating to death ?!!! I am a cyclist through and through but an Ebike up this hill isn't such a bad idea just as long as you don't try and show off as you have a motor to assist you . All the haters have clearly not tried one . They are so much fun . No substitute for an tradtional bike for me but for a disabled person or the elderly or even hauling a heavy trailer then this is a good alternative . Also you are still pedaling and if the worst happens and the motor cuts out you can still ride it (if you have a fairly light one like mine) .

Most cyclists suffer backaches from straining there back when climbing hills, the ebike allows one to sit and support ones back whilst climbing a steep hill. If one wants a really good workout? Turn off assistance and sprint cycle for 2 minutes with 2 minutes gentle, followed by 2 minutes sprint and so on and on until you feel you have had a good work out 🏋 and then turn on assistance and cruise along whilst recovering ( it's simply Devine ) and such a flexible bike 🚴

High BPM = good workout. On long climbs, ebikes offer a very good workout because you naturally try to help the motor. Since you're making good progress, it's easy to stay motivated to push and keep the rpm up. Doesn't matter if you're in good shape or not, the workout is there for you.

Peter Kjærsgaard depends, your battery would drain 50%-100% faster at 45kph, I use a 48 volt 1000 watt hub at 22 amps@30mph+, and at full tilt it drains the battery very quickly, it lasts around 35 minutes, and thats with 4x12amp hour batteries in a serial, max range is around 10 miles at 30mph, and thats with a 16kg sla set up, even a lithium pack would still come in at 12kg, i only use the sla as its much cheaper, that 4kg I would save would only translate into an extra 2 miles, and I can live with that, have to say, your ebike is very light, and its quite impressive that you managed to climb that mountain with just 2 x 9 amp hour batteries. oh, my ebike is not assisted, ie, I never peddle it....

+MisterMacrae Hey dude, Just wandering what batteries you used. I have a 1000w kit with 2 x 6 cell 16 amp lipos in series and i did 12 miles the other day at full speed all the way up and down hills maxed out. I still had 40% of my battery power remaining. When I charged the batteries afterwards they took about 9 or 10 amps. The lipo's I used were multistar 16.0 amp 6 cell 10c batteries from hobby king. Just thought you might be interested :)

i used lead acid, for 2 years, but now using lithium/magnesium, and btw, I never cycle, except on a steep hill to help the motor, hence the lack of range, i still get 10+miles, in Scotland, where hills are steep, and thats using a small 20 amp hour 30 amp max output battery, it weighs a measly 4.5kg, the lead acid weighed in at 16kg, if I wanted, I could easily add another lithium/magnesium pack, and double the range again, I dont trust lipo enough, iv seen too many horror vids on youtube of them catching fire when used on ebikes.
@jcreedy20
@jcreedy20 8 жыл бұрын
If you know how to look after lipo's, I.E if your not using them for months then store at 40% and dont puncture them etc... then they are better than any other battery out there. My 16 amp 52v setup puts out around 160 amps constant and 320 burst. Overkill obviously. But when i move up to the 6kw kit I intend to get then I guess I am future proofed :) They are also light weight like yours. One 16 amp 24 volt battery weighs 2 kilo's. Seriously dude, Lipo's are amazing, look into them further. But if you like the simple life when it comes to batteries then I completely understand, everyone has there preferences :)

Peter Kjærsgaard I am actually one of those lycra guys but I don't bother someone over take me on road anytime even bully me for riding slow. we all have different target on a ride and who knows if the guy on ebike is a testing engineer for a new ebike platform. Products all need testing and the best way is to test them on the road.

You dont have to imagine you will ride more. You WILL ride more :-). It is just so more fun and the best thing is that YOIU decide how much workout you want. Not the weather or the terrain. I rode about 200 kilometers a year before I got my ebike. Now 3 years after I got my ebike I still ride 10 times more a year.

Peter Kjærsgaard Thanks Peter. My sister and I only recently bought new road bikes £500 each. I think i will need to look into ebikes and how much they are. It's great watching your video because I can see you are still getting a great cardio workout, but you can ride for longer and enjoy it more. It's hard to know why we are so faithful to suffering! Even with exercise and losing weight a lot of people are finding long work outs don't work, but short intense bursts are more effective. Biking should be enjoyable rather than tiring. :) Glad I watched your videos.

........ Peter you don't have to stop your bicycle to change from one battery to another. Just buy an AB switch and connect both batteries to it. Then when one battery dies, just switch to B on the AB switch and the other battery kicks in while the depleted battery shuts off. Cheers............ Frank (from New York City)

Haters will be haters-this great video shows that the e-bike allows riders of all sizes and fitness attributes to enjoy in the wonderful sport of "getting the f'k outdoors". Now shut-up all you elitist "gotta suffer to make it legit" idiots. Suffer in silence, and applaud the fact that the bicycle gets another person out there sharing in this wonderful sport. I've seen 85 year-olds back on their bikes, and war veteran double leg amputees pedaling hills that most of y'all would never conquer. The e-bike is here to stay-embrace it-you too, slick young healthy cyclist today, may be in need of an e-bike one day!

If your heart rate was up that much... probably a good idea to swallow some carbs on the way up. I can see that yes you can still exercise quite well on an electric bike and it is in the back of my mind to create one... but oddly enough I was going to use it on a recovery ride. I usually post by rides on strava but if I had an ebike I wouldn’t

Thank you. I have a 250W front hub motor fitted to a Gravity cyclocross bike with disc brakes with a 24v 26 Ah battery (Panasonic cells) rated for 50 miles. I have never pushed it like you have. My bike with similar fittings is probably 8 to 10 pounds heavier than yours. It is a LEED conversion. I like it. The front fork is a CrMo, so it is plenty strong enough for the hub. I have never run out of juice. But it would be nice to have a meter like yours to know how much juice is left. Yours is 36v so may have more power for the hills. idk whether that is true or not. It depends on how the hub is wound and the controller is set up.. Based on watt hours, mine should make it to the top with the kind of pedaling that you were doing. Since mine is a front hub and disc brakes, a 26 inch wheel could be subbed in which would give the wheel more torque. I don't have any torque sensors or anything, just a raw on / off button.

GPS grade is so inaccurate. Calculating your elevation gain using a barometric altimeter is much better. Using just a GPS generally uses inaccurate data due to how it works out how the road lies on the mountain - it thinks the mountain is a flat surface with the road painted on the side, so as it meanders it thinks your going up and down all the time.
