Well done. One could add: 16.- After the first start, let your chainsaw engine warm up 30 seconds before starting to cut. Piston + rings + cylinder-wall will thank you on the long run. 17.- Check/Fill the bar oil when refueling (especially if you have a long bar, set to pump more bar oil). 18.- After a high rev. cut or intense cutting session, let your chainsaw run 30 seconds at idle, to cool down before turning it off. 19.- Clean your chainsaw after use, use a thick brush and/or compressed air. It's a bit of a pain to do it before the glass of beer, but if you do it you will feel good and the beer will taste better! 20.- Keep your air filter clean and happy :) Cheers

Thanks for sharing more thoughts 😀 There are so many more things that could be shared and taught. Even this video is a little lengthy for many attention spans. Maybe more for another future video.

One thing that's important to note, i think, is that kickback can also be caused by a pinch. If the wood of a limb you're bucking closes down on your bar (or during any part of any cut on a palm trunk) it can mimic an upper quadrant cut kickback by pinching down on the chain on that part of the bar from the sides and throwing it back at you. This is especially likely when the cut begins to close or bind and you pull the saw out, pulling the upper quadrant through the pinch.

Another thing is how used to the saw you are. If you're just starting out, don't get a gigantic saw for trimming trees smaller than a soda can. I started on a Stihl MS180c. Ran that little sucker forever. Then I got a Stihl MS250. The first saw I actually used was a Stihl (Don't remember the exact number) Farmboss. I was smaller, Scrawny. The saw was heavy, it ended up running across my leg. Luckily I was wearing chaps. But that's when I got the MS180c and worked up to the Stihl MS 250. Used the 250 until it started feeling like I was cranking sand. I retired it.

Thx for great video . Just ask because just got a 261 and will use the 14 bar for normal smal stuff but like to ad a larger . Looks like you use a 20 inch light 04 .325 or ? Is that working well if it is that? Thx for help Freddy

Great tips for newbies. I was totally ignoring saw dogs, so need to learn how to saw properly using them (I used a handsaw movement before which works but it's a bit tiring). And of course I have to learn not to hover over the chain while sawing trying to look closely at the cut.

Give a soft round face to the racker, for less kickback. A good maintain-sharpening chain is the key.

One more thing that will dull your chain: glass. At some point, someone tossed a beer bottle at the bar of the tree where I was cutting the shoots that sometimes grow from the roof system. Well, one of the bigger shoots grew around the glass shards. That was not a fun surprise when I cut the shoot.

I'm using a chainsaw for about 30 years and I don't understand what you mean by "kickback" or when it would occur ???
@ClimbingArborist11 ай бұрын
Kickback most commonly occurs with the upper quadrant of the nose makes contact and ‘kicks back’ suddenly
@andrewtrip861711 ай бұрын
Usually the result of pinching or hitting a second stick behind your work piece .Most common When coppicing Or hedge laying crowded stands .

If there is a risk of spraining your wrist when the saw kicks then you are holding it incorrectly ..Body alignment is fundamental to avoiding injury .with any hand held power tool .
@ClimbingArborist11 ай бұрын
Body alignment is certainly fundamental. As is knowledge of how to avoid kickback. But we've all sprained and strained something from an unexpected move, reaction etc... this was just a friendly piece of advice 👍

great tips, but can't believe you didn't mention anything about safety gear. If you're felling a tree - WEAR A LID! First time you need it you will thank your friend in the sky that you had it on. And for any tree work, eye protection too. Ear protection never a bad thing, and I've not even got to clothing. So many homeowners think you can just whip out a saw and just get going (I was one). Fear isn't the killer here, a 20 meter per sec rotating razor is the killer, a falling branch giving you a new head-cammo look is the killer. Eye cleanings are just annoying. Cheers!

One thing to do is not to do as shown in the thumbnail. Dont use chainsaw like that, you can see where the kickback is going to hit, in your head.
@matiascamprubi-soms771911 ай бұрын
Sometimes you need a high stump. There's reasons to cut that high, and you should never attempt it unless you're sure that you can handle the saw up there.

I’m a mid-level experience chainsaw user. I can vouch that kickback is a real thing and I have almost been the victim of it a few times…. Wear your chaps and a helmet with a face shield. If you do experience bad kickback maybe the face shield will save your face from getting butchered
