Really cool to see someone pick Adams brain on some random topics, cool to hear about his involvement/opinion in the course with magnus, opinion on best indoor boulderer, and grade ranges.
@136nugget9 ай бұрын
Glad to see Adam Ondra hates grade ranges. I'm just a Gumby who has been bouldering 6 times and probably can't even complete a V2, but I don't even know how terrible I am because the gym by me uses grade ranges with colors. I wasn't sure if I was just a dumb gumby for wanting grades, but if the long neck and dyno man agree I feel better about it now.
@boogaloo46409 ай бұрын
Magnus said the same thing in the new video on his second channel
@spiritualliving83189 ай бұрын
I don’t get what grade ranges or the colors are, I know about the 3 grading systems however, but my first time going to a gym I was able to climb v4s, I’ve gone a few times since and still haven’t gotten a v5 yet but my visits have been far between so.
@xp89699 ай бұрын
Trying to have a consistent grading system has always been a challenge in climbing with the specific difficulties ranging from the differential in difficulty of movements depending on one's size and particular strengths and weaknesses to the difficulty that naturally comes from a diverse group of people climbing all sorts of different things and trying to put an objective number to their subjectively diverse experiences so having a range for each problem's grade actually seems like a good idea to me
@idiot41779 ай бұрын
@@spiritualliving8318 unless you're just super strong or super talented getting a v4 first time bouldering usually means the gym is grading very softly

I absolutely agree with Adam on the topic of how much better you can progress when someone explains techniques to you and since you're always alone when it comes to being on the wall, I think an online format would largely have the same effects as someone explaining it in person.. I still remember the first time someone explained a "body wave" (no idea of the correct term, English isn't my first language) using basically only momentum on moves that aren't quite jumps yet, I had been climbing for years at that point but just having someone explain it again, how and where to shift the weight was one of my first experiences of thinking about technique in a way that broke down the movement and less in a childish "I want to reach that hold and it just worked" kind of way. Then doing the movement a bunch go times and getting comfortable with it id different ways, directions etc. I was maybe 11/12 y/o then and it has stuck with me for over a decade, I've had different trainers at different levels since, but that young man explaining this to me still stands as one of the points I remember falling in love with climbing all over again :)
@matthewbrod44509 ай бұрын
15:40 as a newer climber I could not agree more. getting to know the grading scale has been a huge motivator for me and even if I can't finish a higher grade, I feel good making progress on it knowing its graded harder than my usual sends
