Clinical Outcomes of Adults With Bicuspid Aortic Valve

Dr. Maurice Enriquez Sarano, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, reviews his article appearing in the March 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings reporting outcomes in a cohort of patients diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve in a regional treatment center in northern France (Amiens) led by Professor Christophe Tribouilloy, a Mayo Alumnus. This regional large cohort showed that the 10-year survival rates of bicuspid aortic valve patients with a wide age range but mostly middle-aged adults, were similar to those of the general population with a very low rate of complications. Dr Enriquez-Sarano contrasts the results with those observed in the community of Olmsted County, Minnesota, whereby an equally good survival with rare aortic dissection and frequent necessity for aortic valve replacement was observed. These coherent worldwide results underscore that general reassurance of patients with bicuspid aortic valve is in order.
