I spent the entirety of the very first paycheck I ever earned on my painted agama and all the equipment for her when I was 16. Two months ago I lost her just a couple months before the 13 year anniversary of that day. I have never seen another at pet shops, or even an expo, so she felt very unique. Seeing this pop up was a nice reminder of her!

In case anyone is wondering. A lot of people that were breeding these no longer do. I talked to the last breeder in my area about this 8 or 9 years ago. I was able to get the very last one he bred as a birthday present. They are not as popular as some of the other lizards so they were not as profitable and he was having a hard time sourcing breeding pairs because import rules changed.

@@Che_Yo There aren't any venomous agamid lizards. (Not proper venom anyway, I think I read somewhere that bearded dragon saliva has some enzymes that make their bite slightly more painful, but realistically a beardie's really unlikely to bite in the first place, so that's not an issue at all really.)
@elijahmontgomery4146
@elijahmontgomery4146 4 жыл бұрын
Che Yo There are only 2 truly venomous lizards in the world, the Gila Monster, and the Mexican Beaded lizard. Some monitor lizards have lots of bacteria that can cause infections and illness with a bite. However they lack venom glands, they just have saliva that’s akin to a petrie dish.

Yes. Yes. Yes!!! I have had my group of painted agamas for 11 years. (one male, 6 females) They are hands down my favorite lizards. (And I have a pet store, so...I have had a LOT of lizards. ;) ) They are very active lizards that love being in a group. I have had two successful breeding years. The key is cooling them down for at least 6 weeks in the late winter. I am in Florida and they are inside our store. In mid-January, I turn off the heat lamp. I keep the UVB bulb on. They do not fully brumate (another thing I like about them. Beardies terrify me every. single. time they brumate. They just slow down. We still offer food, just not as much, and easier to digest food. They still sit under the UVB and get a "little" warmth. At the end of February, we turn the heat back on. Agamas get frisky, and in April- May they start laying eggs in the sand. Three months later you will have the most adorable little muppets! So worth a try if you are inclined. I am holding all of the babies back to keep all the females and have a new colony eventually as I have no idea how old mine are. They are at least 13 years old as they were adults when arriving. They take almost two years to reach adulthood. They are slow growers. The babies are adorable! I would like to add that although they do not drop their tail, they will grow it back. One of my wild-caught females had a tail that was missing the last two inches when she arrived. (Not sure about a tail that has more damage than that though) It grew back in. You can tell it was not a part of the original tail, but it is not very noticeable. Our group eats salad every day and they are NOT picky eaters. They will eat just about anything you offer. Reptilinks, any kind of bug, pellets...doesn't matter, if it's food, it's fair game. They love foraging for food too. We put worms in a ball and they have a game of Agama Ball. That is one of the best parts about owning them. They are so entertaining. I am so happy you made this video! :)

This has been exactly what I found; I deeply enjoy my Painted Agama that I obtained well after I got a bearded dragon, being told that Bearded Dragons were absolutely the best to start with - that they're cool and chill and want to be with you. Mine is absolutely not this way and it's taken 5 years of work just to get him to allow me to pick him up so he can do his soaks twice a week, won't ever drink out of a water dish, etc. He's just not an interactive, or IMO, fun pet. Last year I rescued a painted agama who is absolutely everything I actually wanted out of a bearded dragon; personable, friendly, and handle-able. I was just saying yesterday that I wish I'd known about them before I got a bearded dragon - my only complaint is that it seems to be very difficult to find CB painted/clown/ agamas. I'm sure mine was probably wild caught, and I generally don't like to get those for pets. I hope folks catch on to how cool these are as pets and start breeding them.
@FinnieB
@FinnieB 3 ай бұрын
Interestingly enough though, it seems like not all painted agamas are like this, especially if you get one that is a juvie or baby and wasnt handled much. I have a captive born and bred who is not very active (yes husbandry is correct, have spent a ton of money and done a lot of research, give all the right supplements, lighting temps, size of enclosure are all exactly what they need to be... etc). Not very active is fine with me, but he does not like being held and at first was so terrified of me he would run and hide when I simply entered the room. I think people should be aware that there is the chance you get a painted agama and it not being how everyone says they are. I have also heard of others having this experience with theirs as well. There should always be a disclaimer that not every single one of these little guys will be the same in temperament.

She now will literally jump out of her terrarium to say hi and will hang out with me for hours she loves to sit on my shoulder and crawl in my shirt and nap on my chest she is so friendly and active. I wish she was bigger because then I could just let her run around the house all day. Absolutely highly highly recommend one such a fantastic pet. She isn’t even afraid of my cats at all and has jumped up on their backs a couple of times. One thing I never see mentioned is they change color when she is cold judo will be much darker in color and when she warms up she gets much much more tan.

The first reptile I ever had was a painted agama. He was given to me by a friend who neglected him for years. He had serious burns on his stomach from a malfunctioning heat rock, he had stuck shed all the way along his tail and his diet consisted of ONLY crickets. I liked reptiles but I had very little knowledge of them at the time. It took me weeks to figure out what kind of lizard he really was, and even longer to nurse him back to health and tame him down. After that he was like a puppy. A Hand fed, cuddle-loving puppy. I have gone on to own over 2 dozen reptiles and to this day I have never had one that I cared for as much as him (my Savannah monitor is the only close call). These lizards make great pets. He passed away a couple years ago unfortunately but I will love him till the day I die. Side note; most bites from these agamas aren't too bad, but there was an instance where I let my guard down while taking him and he bit my finger so hard he broke my finger nail down the middle! Don't underestimate these guys!!

I have used silicone (the sort that is used to seal aquariums) to glue rocks and sticks together when making hides and climbs in reptile tanks so that they can't collapse on the critter. It works great and can get wet, so I can even make waterfalls and plant boxes. ... just don't use too much or it becomes a mess.

Great to see you finally do a video on these. I've had a team of them for years now. Some of them are a bit mental though, so I wouldn't expect a Beardie experience ( I.e a pet rock). Mine are good to sit for maybe 15 minutes, then they tend to want to "explore" dissappear. Awesome pets though.

I rescued a female Painted Agama in the winter. I live in South Florida but it still gets really chilly in the winter. She fell from a tree and is paralyzed in her back legs. She can crawl and climb, but she drags her back legs. I bought her everything under the sun, the biggest and best terrarium and all the accessories. This is my first reptile so I’ve done a lot of reading and a lot of it is through trial and error. She doesn’t have the biggest appetite and I think she hates me. LOL! The day I rescued her, I was trying to feed her and she bit my finger. I think she’s holding a grudge against me! Heehee! She is friendly to me now but she always tries to run every time I approach her. I absolutely love her to pieces and I named her Emma:) I’ve read so many different articles on the proper temperature for her terrarium. I started her out in the mid 70s and her appetite was at zero. I boosted her to the 80s and she started eating. Now I have her in the mid 90’s and she’s a lot more active and climbs over her beautiful jungle. I noticed she is losing weight though. I just don’t know what to do. I’ve had her for about 7 months now. Do you have any suggestions? I’m also curious about the type of bedding I should use. I have the typical lizard cloth mat and half of her cage is mulch. Should I use sand? She spends most of her time on the mulch where her jungle resides. She has a bowel movement maybe once or twice a week. She doesn’t eat very much. Is this normal for this breed? I would deeply appreciate any advice you can offer me. I love your channel and thank you so much:))
