When I was 6 years old I saw this great movie at the Starlite Drive-In Theater in Christiansburg, VA...It scared me far worse than "The Blob," "The Crawling Eye" or even "The Curse of Frankenstein!" Superb acting by all, and made me a fan of Burl Ives...boy, he could play "rotten" pretty good!!! BTW, the Starlite Drive-In Theater is one of the few original drive-in movies still in operation!

The Manchineel is a real tree, and is as deadly as the movie lets on. Colloquially known as the "beach apple tree," it's bark is so acidic that residual dew has been known to cause blisters. Sailors as far back as the mid-1700's have reported burns and blindness after handling it's lumber, and several people die every year from accidental ingestions of it's fruit.

This movie reminds me of "Classic Illustrated" comics of the day - 1950s to 60s. The story line, adventure, mild romance, etc.

Burl Ives..... It's different to see him as a villain. I grew up seeing him as a gentle character in family films. This is definetly something I didn't expect.

What goes around comes around. Later in the film Burl Ives is bitten by a cotton mouth snake and dies a painful death. He finally acknowledges he was wrong about the birds they were slaughtering and that Christopher Plummer was trying to protect. Great movie from the great Nicholas Ray - though he was unable to finish the film due to personal problems. It's available on DVD from Warner Archives and worth checking out.
