This is the easily the best comparison video of three microphone pickup systems available to upright players - the reviewer's comments were very insightful and finely observed, concentrating on the quality of sound reproduction during use, and also any perceived disadvantages...highly recommended.

Thank you for you video. I like the DPA and Remic. Personally, I position my Remic squeezed under the bridge since 4-5 years and It never felt. To me, the Remic goes under the bridge or under the tailpiece (if you want less definition from arco playing) but definitively not under the fingerboard.

Fin test! Hadde vært interessant å hørt DPA4099 testet mot ATM350 også. Si i fra om du vil låne. Opplever at ATM-en har litt mer kontroll i diskanten. Har også hatt 4099 lenge..

Frode, great video and a wonderful channel overall! I'm curious how often you use a microphone to blend with a pickup for your everyday small group (trio/quartet) jazz gigs; the kind of settings where there is no PA except for maybe a horn player and you are hearing your instrument entirely though your amp. Follow-up question; when you've used a mic in this setting, have you found a noticeable improvement in the sound (and is it practical through a bass amp)? Thanks.

Most of the time with just an amp and no PA I will go piezo only. Occasionally i have blended in a microphone, but I feel it works best with only the piezo in the amp, and the mic going to the PA with the soundguy mixing the two. My best experiences involve having a wedge up high behind me with only the mic in it. At the correct volume it blends so nicely with the amp, very inspiring!

Compliments for this review! What I have missed is wich piezzo pick up you have used in combination with the mic's?

For music theater productions I play in, our FOH-guy doesn't like any of those mics because of the spill they all have in common. He prefers to wedge a e609 dynamic mic into my bridge with a piece of foam. Whatever makes him happy I guess...

nice and instructive video 👍 could you please tell what you used to blend both prodipe and your piezo ?

There’s a DI called the Headway EDB-2 HE that allows for blending and can supply phantom power to the microphones XLR

The only mics I will ever consider outside of my ribbon mics are the dpa4099 and the electrovoice re20.. I NEVER use piezo, di, pickup or anything that's not a mic... The leak is what makes the sound of the bass 3 dimensional.. all other methods of amplification are a joke to the upright..

Great video. Thanks for including sound from live performance, not many videos does that, but is’s so crucial :-) Since you had problems with the Remic under the fingerboard, did you try the other two recommended placement options (Under tailpiece or bridge)? kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmHIZnd_etp6rZI Looking for a mic myself so really interested…

hi, and thanks for your kind comment! I'm embarrassed to admit that the bridge mount option slipped right past me, and I will definitely make a short follow up to test this configuration in a jazz quartet setting shortly. the tailpiece option wasn't very practical on my bass for this gig, as I have my wilson Gain One buffer mounted to the tailpiece. again, thanks, and a follow up is coming!🙂
