The Equalizer franchise with Denzel is one that never lost quality across its three films and I love how the mystery of who he was before and what he has done remains, even to us the audience. If they ever want to explore his past though, I hope they do it absolute justice!

The mystery is always better. Always. And whenever the movies explain things, they do it in the stupidest spoon feeding way. Like the little boy story. It's not even enough to explicitly say "things a child might steal". He has to keep going and explain everything. And say it in Russian, and then say it in English, too. It's mind numbing. It's an action movie. It's supposed to be dumb. But as far as mystique and writing go, it's a joke. About the only thing they got right was the mystery. I'd rather they kept it.

I loved the way Denzel & Fuqua had him play Robert. I was a huge fan of the old Edward Woodward CBS series of the 80s and thought this movie series was splendid and was a good take and homage to the old series. The reasoning for McCall’s trek to Italy was quintessential Equalizer, “Got a Problem, Odds Against You, Call the Equalizer. “ The last film really reminded me of an old Western where the gunfighter who has done some unspeakable things is looking for redemption and he befriends, protects, and defends a small town from big baddies. The Italian locations were breathtakingly beautiful. A nice happy ending and good closure for an entertaining well done trilogy of films.

In acting, it’s called range… Denzel has been an action hero, a straight up bad guy ( Training Day), a loving father (John Q), a teacher (The Great Debaters), Shakespeare an ( Much Ado…), coach (Remember the Titans), comedy (Carbon Copy), drama (Fences)…. Cry Freedom, Malcom X, Philadelphia, Glory, Courage under Fire, Man on Fire, and the list goes on. 55 movies since 1975 and all acted superbly. IMO he is the greatest actor of all time!

1:35 "stop me if you know this one" what a magnificent way to catch someone's attention and put him in a place of two options making him chose one even if he didn't want to chose neither because he wasn't even thikning about making any choice at all. Robert really did put pressure on him brick by brick and dollar by dollar throughout the whole scene but they are both made of hard material so neither of them flinched by nothing... except in the end when Robert turned his own question against him "What do you see when you look at me". THAT was the moment when Nicolai truly realized that this might be the beginning of his end. But being who he was and where he was in life he finally found someone who was actually worthy of his time and attention which is (always) the reason people like him don't just shoot the other one but rather enjoy the interactions they may have since they don't get much of those at this point in life. Not enough of "others" to meet let alone be friends with. I would also like to put some emphasis on the "it might be the beginning of his end" part as people like Nicolai faced some opponents in their life and they always won so why should this be any different. We, the audience, know who Robert is so we know Nicolai is about to eat dirt soon but IRL there is no audience and the film makers did an incredible job by creating powerful and deep moments like this one. The Equalizer is not just a shoot 'em up movie but it has immense depth, intricacy, grace and much more all in one package. Nicolai would be smarter if he just knew the saying "Beware of an old man in a profession where men die young" but then again what options did he really have? Call his boss and say "Yo there is a black guy telling us to quit" and his boss "Why?" and Nicolai "Because he brought some broken glasses". Boss would say "Oh..." (like when Viggo Tarasov learned that his son killed John Wicks dog) and close shop, Robert says thank you and that would be the end of the movie.

I love all three films, really rate Denzel especially as we were both born in the same year. I remember the TV series with Edward Woodward was was really good. I like scripts and the concept ot the bullies getting their just deserts. I also like the small seperate side stories are part of the overall story. Just watched the third and it has two side stories which are very clever and part of the storyline. The third one really leaves it open for subsequent stories and linked to the others.
