Now, it's a fueling point for narcotics smugglers. There's also a side note to the French/Mexican fight over it. Every year, the Mexican Navy goes out and raises a Mexican flag over the island. Later in the year, the French Navy visits, takes down the flag, and replaces it with their own. The fight is still going on!

Simon you should look at the story of the Dutch ship Batavia, wrecked off the west coast of Australia in the 17th century near what is now known as Beacon Island. The story of the Batavia makes what happened on Clipperton Island (as tragic as that story was) look like a holiday camp.

What about a geographics on Silimodo island in South Korea that had a camp set up for a death squad tasked with killing Kim il Sung? They ended up escaping the island as they were abused constantly and their assassination mission cancelled, a bus full of them in Seoul was involved in a shootout with grenades, some of them killed themselves then and there. 6 survived and were all tortured and executed. I think they were essentially not allowed to leave the camp on the island, when the mission was cancelled they had a mutiny.

Hi Simon! I love your videos on both biographics and geographics. This story of a forgotten atoll is very similar to the island where I grew up. There’s an atoll that is part of the marshal islands where they test out misiles. It’s called Kwajalein. While I left too early in my life to know the full history. I found out it used to be owned by the Japanese in ww2. Maybe you could do a video on it! 😄

Clipperton Island became some what relevant after United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea came into force. The convention introduced the concept of exclusive economic zone that grants a state exclusive resource exploration rights in the area extending 200 nautical miles from low water mark of the coast of a teritorry. Though I have not researched if any valuable resources (including fishes) are present, it definitely has some use for France.

I guess its story isn't completely done. August 1992 I was in the US Navy, chasing drug smugglers in the eastern Pacific. We got a tip and raced to Clipperton. We actually caught them. They tried to claim they had an engine problem. We gave them some help and said we would accompany them back to Mexico, in case they broke down again 😉. Once our partner ship came over the horizon, they started throwing bags overboard like crazy.

@@jrt818 Limes originated, like all citrus, in the Mediterranean. Any grown in the West Indies also came from there. Different varieties do not vary much in Vitamin C content. And those fresh fruits were what exactly? Imported citrus.

@@vernicethompson4825 From the internet and the book "Limeys: The Conquest of Scurvy": Oranges have more Vitamin C than lemons, which have about 40% more Vitamin C than limes. If that lime juice was stored in a barrel or came into contact with copper or cooked to reduce it (which was usually the case until the invention of Rose's Lime Juice Cordial), the Vitamin C would degrade even further, becoming nearly useless against scurvy. Some lime juice was actually lemon juice with no distinction being made. The key lime (West Indian) is actually a cross like most limes some of which are not real limes at all.
